Commodore’s Comments Here it is July Currents already...happy 4th of July everyone! The date I’m writing this article is actually May 30, and yesterday was the grand finale of the threeday observance of Memorial Day at VYC. What an exceptional weekend this was! Thank you, Fleet Captains Kitch Keitchen and Bill Gately, for

hosting and organizing our Memorial Day events. Thank you, V/C Gus Olson, P/C Shawn Graser, and your team for the spectacular Blessing of the Fleet. Thank you to our Past Commodores, Board of Directors, Members and Staff for participating in our retreat and memorial services honoring our country, community and Club. It is truly an honor and privilege to be the Commodore of such an outstanding organization. And by the way, the “real” mermaids swimming in the VYC pool yesterday with the myriad of amazed children was epic.

July1marksthestartofanewfiscalyearforVYC.The Board approved an operating budget for FY 17/18 that does not include any increases to membership dues or fees. This is a remarkablefiscal challengebecausethe Board has also acted this year to increase the levels of insurance coverage for our property and business operations. I’m pleased to report that the Board and Finance Committee have chosen a very frugal yet prudentapproachforoperationsthisnewfiscalyear. Mid-July is also the projected start date for the clubhouse renovations. The approved plans are to remodel our entry foyer, reception area and Pearson’s Cove.Wewillalsorepurposetheolddancefloorareawhich will increase the size of Pearson’s Cove and create a Lobby area adjacent to the Reception Desk. Obviously, we will need to make some temporary accommodations to allow for the construction activities. Please be patient with a little mess and, of course, “pardon the dust.”

You know a little dust never bothered one of my idols, Clint Eastwood. He’d just wash it down with a shot of whiskey and then go take care of business. So, don’t let a little remodel action get you down or keep you away from the Club. Our excellent staff of chefs, bartenders and waiters will be looking forward to seeing you and will be ready to take care of your business. If you missed out watching the mermaids in person, here’s an opportunity for something interesting as well...Belly Dancers. Cora Wright and her collaborators are bringing a Moroccan Nights party to the VYC on July 22. Given the history of Cora Wright productions, I wouldn’t be surprised if the main dining room is transformed into a lavish tent in Marrakech with camel rides available to the Tiki bar. I also want to bring attention to our website, www.veniceyachtclub.com, and our newsletter, the Currents. As Commodore, I get the benefit of viewing severalother yacht clubs’ newsletters and websites. Our monthly Currents and website are undeniably prepared and presented better than most I’ve seen. Michael Frank, our webmaster and graphic artist guru, totally rebuilt and redesigned our website from the ground up this past January with some ongoing assistance from our General Manager, Jerry Clemens. We can take pride in, and enjoy, our interactive and informative website. Equally informative and valuable is our newsletter, the Currents Beth Anderson is the editor. I don’t really know much about what Beth does. That’s because she does it so darn well, nobody needs to know. The newsletters just show up at our houses magically. Thank you, Beth and Mike, for your talented good work. Best wishes for a fantastic July and some nautical cogitation.Kerry Carper, Commodore

Manager’s ColumnWe are excited to announce that the work has been completed on the two new added features to the VYC web page. Using these features, you will now be able to view your current statement, view past statements, and even check individual charges to your account. You will also now have the ability to make changes to such things

as your address, phone number, etc., without having to call the Club. There is one feature that is NOT yet available and that is the electronic payment of your balance through the web site. That will follow in about two weeks.Getting to the new features is really very simple: ☞

1. Go to the VYC web page.2. In the upper right corner, you will see a tab that says “Log in.”3. When you click on this tab, there will be two drop downs; click on the one that says “My Account.”4. Now, in the upper left corner, you will see three tabs, “Home,” “Roster,” and “Statements.” 5. Click on the area where you want to go. For instructional purposes, let’s say “Statements.”6. Click on “Statements.” This will take you to a “Member Registration Instruction” page.7. Thefirsttimeyougotothisarea, youwillneedto register, so click on “Member Registration.”8. Once on the “Member Registration Instructions” page, simply follow the instructions. Should you need more detailed instructions, you will see a place you can click for that as well. You may need to scroll down a bit to get to the “Member Registration” button which is located directly below the “Log In” button.9. After you click “Validate,” you will be directed to create your own unique username and password.10. Once you have completed this process, it will take up to one hour for the information to process allowing you access to your account. You will also receive anemailconfirmationthatyourregistrationhasbeen successful.

Trust me, it looks much more complicated than it is, and youonlyhavetogothroughthisthefirsttime.Afterthat, you will simply log in using the username and password you created. You may want to write them down or use whatever method you use to keep track of your various usernames and passwords. As a reminder, the username (vycweb) and password (HIGEL1) to access the VYC Member’s Area remain the same.

Also, the cameras are not currently accessible via the web page. We are having a new router installed solely for them. They were overloading the Wi-Fi system at the waterfront. I will let you know when they are back. Once we have completed the programming necessary to go live with the electronic bill pay feature, I will send out an email with the necessary instructions on how you can access it. In the meantime, please take the time to register with the new features and get in and poke around. Let me know what you think or give me a call if you have any problems.Fair winds and following seas.Jerry Clemens, Club Manager

Message from the Fleet Captain Sail Best wishes from Cape Cod for a happy and safe 4th of July weekend. Noreen and I are sorry we cannot be with you to celebrate this important holiday but there is the 4th of July even here in Massachusetts. This column is being written right after our successful Memorial Day Weekend activities. A special thanks

to the committee responsible for planning and executing this successful event: Karla Olson, V/C Gus Olson, P/C Shaun Graser, Kitch Keitchen, Lloyd Abbot, our great MasterofCeremoniesP/CJoeDombrowki,andtrafficcopDockmaster Ted George. The Venice Yacht Club is indeed putting “Memorial” back into this important holiday weekend. We had great publicity and coverage from our local newspapers since, for the second year, we have invited the public to participate with us. Participation by fellow Yacht Club members was exceptional. We had 21 boats in the parade with almost 80 members and guests aboard during the parade. The weather was beautiful, if somewhat hot. The wind was NW between 15 and 20 knots, which combined with a strong outgoing tide, created a problem for the boats to organize the parade outside the Venice Inlet. Instead, we all headed south towards the KMI Bridge by Marker 4 and, after a fashion, miraculously sorted all the boats out in order. We sailed back to the Yacht Club reviewing stand for the blessing by Rev. Chris Gray and Father Peter Brudzinski. Despite concerns from many of the captains, who shall remain nameless, no boats were struck by lightning following their blessings. If it had been a cloudy day, well...? We would have had 22 boats in the parade if Stanley Ross’ boat, Polliwog, could have been coaxed into starting (I call Stanley's boat Tadpole since he calls my racing sailboat Submission!). Polliwog is 20 feet long, so Stanley told his wife, Julie, that he would get oars if she would agree to row Polliwog during the Parade. For some reason Julie declined the offer. Accordingly, Stanley and Julie and their four guests needed to hitch a ride on another boat to enjoy the parade; a need that was very kindly met by Steve and Barbara Johnson aboard Whimsea J. Thank you, Steve and Barbara! Following the shore-based Retreat Ceremony’s act of remembrance for our fellow departed members, some stalwart boaters forged into the Venice Inlet chop to conduct our traditional Wreath Ceremony in a very lumpy Gulf of Mexico. This ceremony consisted of Rev. Gray’s recitation of our departed members’ names followed by playing “Amazing Grace” as the 15’ VYBA Whaler approached

A Bay to Bay to Bay to Bar in May with guests from other clubs

the lead boat with sailors Alex Torres and Evan Occhino braving the rough Gulf chop (standing up, no less!), getting wet and laying the memorial wreath in the water as “Taps” was played to its conclusion. Beautiful ceremony! And a beautiful job by our VYBA maestro, Hoyt Corns, who ably handled the music function aboard the lead boat. Best wishes, Hoyt, for your enlistment into the US Marine Corps Reserve to be followed by college in Tallahassee!Bill Gately, Fleet Captain - Sail

Message from the Fleet Captain Power ItisthefirstofJuly, andthatputsusright in the middle of hurricane season again. Although we had a couple of near misses last year, we were fortunate and did not suffer any serious damage. This year the National Hurricane Center has predicted an above normal season, which is even more reason to start planning ahead. As chairperson of

the Emergency Preparedness Team, Karla Olson has updated our hurricane plan which is posted in the member area of our website. Take special notice of the “preparation worksheet” which will guide you through the necessary steps to secure your vessel. And remember, just because it is not a “named storm,”itcouldstillcausesignificantdamageifwedonottakethe proper precautions.

I hope you had a chance to participate in some of the many activities at the Club over Memorial Day Weekend. Although there are always a variety of events for everyone, it is especially enjoyable for us boaters with all the activities around the dock and out on the water. In particular, I want to thank Bob Klingbeil, Bob Bethke, Richard Appell and Barbara Jaehne for their help in organizing thekids’fishingcontest.Andhowabout those marvelous mermaids courtesy of Denise Koppa and Beth Piel? Thank you, both.

New This Summer! Adult Learn To Sail Classes! Tara Foster, VYBA’s Sailing Director, scheduled these classes to respond to many requests from adults interested in learning to sail. US Sailing-Certified Instructors will conduct the classes. You will learn to sail in our Club 420 sailboats. They are two-person sailboats, 13.9 feet in length, and 5.5 feet wide; they are great boats for learning all the introductory aspects of sailing. Consider signing up with a friend, but we will have partners available for you if you sign up solo. You will learn how to rig, launch, sail, dock, and de-rig the boat. In the first class, you will have a brief swim test and be taught how to capsize and recover. Attire requirements:

✭ Closed-toe shoes (no Crocs or flip flops) at all times; water shoes are suggested.

✭ Bring a PFD (personal flotation device, aka as a life jacket) to every class.

Other recommendations: ✭ Wear clothing that can get wet… you’ll be out on the

water, obviously! ✭ Bring a refillable water bottle; hydration on the water

is important! ✭ Apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before each class. ✭ Use appropriate sun protection: sunglasses, hat, and

UV-protective shirts. Classes are on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Three sessions (below), with (6) three-hour classes, $175 per sailor per session:

✭ June 26 – July 12 ✭ July 17 – August 2 ✭ August 7 – August 23

Registration is easy on our website: veniceyouthboating.com. The link to register is on our home page when the website opens. Inspiration and Leadership: A Very Special Combination I have learned that the finest inspirations in life arise when you least expect them. Such was my experience when I first met P/C Dick and Doris Guba, who joined our Charitable

Foundation Committee this year. I was intrigued by their passion for service, and Dick and Doris invited me to their church, The United Methodist Church of Englewood, to help me understand why they were drawn to our Foundation. They had discovered that their church and the VYC were connected by our mutual passion to provide Nutrition, Education, and ShelTer (NEST) to families at risk. The Gubas’ church is a support congregation in the Family Promise Program. Maria Ciampi (Congregational Lead for Family Promise) and Pastor Vic Willis sat down recently with the Gubas and me. They explained that the church has 75 volunteers staffing the program in service to at-risk families. Realizing that a family crisis or other sudden event can put any family at risk, the volunteers support and embrace each at-risk family as if part of their own. Both the Gubas and I shared how the VYCCF responded to Family Promise this year, when we committed $21,000 to help build a new outdoor “Family Scape” at their Venice center of operations. It is designed to help the families in the program to re-unite after a day of work, education, and school, before moving on to a support congregation for the evening. Doris was quite open about how despite their years of VYC

membership and leadership roles, including Dick serving as our Commodore in 2003, they did not know much of what our VYCCF (founded after their years on the Board) really did. They were pleasantly surprised to find a common passion alive in the two institutions they cherish. So, they now serve on the VYCCF, citing how the VYCCF NEST Signature Project (which includes Family Promise) makes a difference in our Venice/South County community. They now hope, through the Foundation, to share their passion for service with many of their friends and fellow members of the VYC. As our interview continued, Doris was enthused to have Maria and Vic show us how they implement their Host Weeks (one week every quarter). They turn their facilities into a true family host center with a full kitchen and a family room for gathering, dining, and relaxing. They also set up sleeping quarters for every member of the families and provide full-time volunteer resident hosts to assist with any need that may arise. Each week that they are assigned to host the program, they care for at least seven families, helping them find hope and a better future through the efforts of Family Promise. I hope you, too, are inspired to find a way to give back to your community. And like this wonderful couple, Dick and Doris Guba, you will inspire others to help the Venice Yacht Club Charitable Foundation chart a course to a better community.Respectfully, Don Healy, Vice Chair

VYCCF Committee: Chair Michael Nemser, Vice Chair Don Healy, Treasurer John O’Donnell,

Commodore Kerry Carper, Cindy Abbot, Lloyd Abbot, Joan Bowen, Bill Bowen, Kevin Collins, P/C Jim DeNiro, P/C Joe Dombrowski, P/C Merle Graser, P/C Dick Guba, Doris Guba, Barbara Isaacson,

The VYCCF invites you to:The VYC Blues Bistro BenefitThursday, August 106:00 - 9:30 p.m. Enjoy an evening of authentic “Blues” brought to us by “Art of Blues,” with Steve Arvey, Bill Buchman, and guest vocalist Rebecca Bird, in a unique event presented by the Venice Yacht Club Charitable Foundation. This will be a summer evening event in which we transform the main dining room into a Bistro as it might have been when the Blues took New Orleans by storm and this new genre of music, paired with the food of the Mississippi Delta, created many a party to remember! Make a reservation and get ready to enjoy a southern inspired “small plate” menu by Chef Josh, and signature cocktails from our VYC mixologists that will evoke the Blues Era throughout the night. We are even planning a “fun raffle event”: maybe you will go home with a “Wine the Blues Away Basket” or a “Basket of Bubbly” or maybe a gift card for another evening out on the town!

From the Fleet SurgeonCarpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common neurologic disorder of the hand. It usually presents with wrist and palm pain and numbness or tingling in the thumb, index and/or long finger. In early stages, itoften bothers people at night but not much during the day. In later

stages, people have constant numbness and have trouble picking up small objects. People who do a repetitive hand motion (hair dresser, carpenter or computer user) are somewhat more prone to develop CTS. Women have an increased incidence during pregnancy. Compression of the median nerve at the wrist is the common cause. Initial treatment includes wearing a wrist splint at nighttopreventflexingorbendingthewristandanti-inflammatories. Sometimes a cortisone injection nearthe nerve will decrease swelling of the nerve and improve symptoms. Although the diagnosis can be made with exam alone a nerve conduction test can verify the diagnosis and severity. If surgery is required it is a quick outpatient procedure that can usually be done under local anesthesia. If left alone long enough permanent damage to the nerve can occur. Don’t be numb to numbness.Dr. Kevin

The General Meeting, at Pensacola Yacht Club, was called to order on May 20 at 1:00 p.m. by Commodore Audrey Rice. Roll call was taken and 22 out of 36 FCYC Clubs were represented.

Commodore Rice made the following motion: If the immediate Past Commodore could not attend an FCYC

Meeting in person, the next immediate Past Commodore in attendance becomes the presiding Past Commodore for that Meeting. This motion was seconded and passed unanimously. With the approval of the Executive Committee, Commodore Rice indicated her intent to form a special committee of three Past Commodores: P/C Gary Riss as Chair, P/C Tom Smith, and P/C Chip Hardy. They will review the FCYC Bylaws Section E. A motion was made and seconded and passed unanimously. Also, Commodore Rice announced that reservations are still available for the Commodore’s Cruise to Canada/New England September 20-30. Secretary Bob Petersonreportedhefiledthe2016AnnualReporttotheSecretaryofState’sOffice.Healsogaveapresentationon the FCYC Info Binder. The educational program at the July meeting will focus on FCYC Reciprocity. Treasurer Bert Ralston reported that all FCYC Clubs had paid their dues for 2017-2018. The Water Bill affecting Lake Okeechobee passed, thereby raising the dike level by 2022. The cost for this initiative will be $1.6 billion with 50% funded by the state of Florida and 50% funded by the Federal Government. Dr. John Bratton from the University of West Florida gave a very interesting talk about the early history of the Pensacola area and showed pictures of the archeological excavations being done.

FYI:• Pelican Isle Yacht Club will be completely closed until December 2017.• St. Charles Yacht Club will close to visiting boaters beginning August 15 due to the new dock construction. The Club hopes to be open on a very limited basis in December 2017. They expect to be back to full operation by March 2018.
