9 th October 2014 Principal’s Desk Welcome Back Welcome back everyone. It was great to see all the happy smiling faces of the parents as they were watching their children lining up at assembly (most of the children were smiling too!). Of course it wouldn’t be the 1 st assembly of the term without some little hiccup with the sound or the National Anthem. Lachlan and Taj are to be congratulated for the way they ignored the technical hitches and carried on regardless. What’s happening at Bonbeach It is more a case of what is not happening here! The school is really buzzing at the moment. The 1 st Farmers’ Market is on this Sunday 12 th October from 9am to 1pm. We have about 50 high quality primary producers selling their goods and we hope to see lots of families there taking advantage of the opportunity to access the fresh and yummy goods. The new bike shed frame is up and we are just waiting for the materials to finish it off. The chicken coop is completed and the chickens are arriving next week. The front entrance has been transformed into a fantastic Alice in Wonderland exposition. The RACV Challenge Team are training hard and frantically preparing their presentation for the actual event. We have had students representing the school at the Regional Athletics Sports on Tuesday. All performed very well and a few achieved Personal Bests. More importantly all were well behaved and enjoyed themselves. The teaching staff are busy analysing data from surveys and the myriad assessment tools over the last 4 years to inform our external reviewers when the school review occurs. I know it doesn’t sound as exciting as all the other events (actually it sounds boring!) but it is extremely important to determine the educational direction of the school over the next 4 years. None of these events could have happened without the hard work and commitment of many people. I am extremely grateful for the efforts that these people have put in over the last few terms and I will be acknowledging them individually in the next few newsletters. Ms Fregon leaving As mentioned last term, Ms Fregon is leaving at the end of this week to commence Family Leave. We wish her all the very best for this exciting new phase of her life and thank her very sincerely for all her hard work and significant input into the various programs she has been involved with during her time here at Bonbeach. Changes for next year A gentle reminder that we are planning possible grade structures and number of classes at this time. If you are aware that your child will be leaving and not attending the school next year, could you please notify the office as soon as possible? Yarn Bombing Whilst obviously not at all destructive like other forms of bombing, it definitely is more impressive. The Alice in Wonderland expo is part of one of the Chelsea Yarn Bombers projects. Alicia Langford, Bu King and all of our busy helpers (including students, both at school and the Pre School) at Crafternoon sessions have put together this amazing display. If you get the opportunity you should take the time to come and view it and the yarn bombed area out the back of the school near the Pre School boundary. They really brighten up the whole place. If you like these, You should jump onto the Longbeach Place Inc. web site to a map of where other yarn bombing projects and walks are in the local area.

Teach children to persist “Persistence and patience have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.” John Quincy Adams The ability to persist at a task and see it through to the end is one of the most important success attributes that you can develop in a child. There are numerous times every day when children must persist rather than give in. A young child learning to tie shoelaces must persist. A primary aged student must show determination to finish tasks and a secondary student needs to work through difficulties, particularly those he doesn’t understand or complete right away. They need to be able to persist when work gets hard or life gets tough. They need the ‘stickability’ to work through difficulties and hang in there when things don’t go their way. Some children are more naturally predisposed to persist than others. They have a determined, even competitive streak in their temperament that doesn’t allow them to give in. These children and young people can drive themselves very hard to succeed. The results of the Australian Temperament Project show that persistence is the one temperamental factor that can be improved over time. Parents and teachers can develop persistence in children and also impede its development by making life too easy for children so that they don’t have opportunities to persist or hang in there. Parents can promote persistence by encouraging their children to keep going and not give in at the slightest hurdle or difficulty. Parents can be a sounding board for children’s gripes but they should show confidence in their ability to cope and get through their difficulties. “You can do it” is far more powerful in terms of promoting an attitude of persistence than “If it is a little too hard then try something else.” Let children know that there is a correlation between effort and success. In fact, they need to learn that by GIVING EFFORT they will more than likely experience more success. The ability to persist in the face of difficulties maybe an old-fashioned quality but it is one of the best success attributes that children will ever develop. Here are four practical strategies you can use to promote a sense of persistence in your children: 1. Develop a vocabulary for persistence. Words like “Hang tough”, “Work Hard” and “Hang in there” can become part of their everyday vocabulary. 2. Point out to children when they stick at a task. Most parents know it pays off when they catch their children being good but it also pays off to catch them being persistent. The behaviours you focus on as parents expand so let them know when they have been persistent. Also remind them that persistence generally pays off. 3. Help children to remember times when they experienced success by HANGING IN when they were younger. Let them know that persistence has paid off before and it will again. 4. Talk about HARD WORK with your children. They need to understand that to be successful they need to do things that are NOT fun or easy. While it would be good if all work and learning was fun, in reality, this is not always the case. Ken Jones Principal

Please help!

I'm off to visit my family in Fiji in at the start

of November and would love your help in

collecting donations to help 2 small villages

and schools in Fiji. These villages are located

on remote islands with few modes of transport

to the island, making resources hard to come

by. We are teaming up with Vomo Island

Resort and the Pack for a Purpose initiative by

taking hand luggage with our personal

belongings, freeing up our check-in luggage

for donations. That leaves us around 66kgs worth of possible donations!

Below is a list of requested items that would be gratefully received -

General School Supplies:

Book Bags, Colored Pencils, Craft Scissors, Erasers, Glue Sticks, Handheld Pencil

Sharpeners, Notebooks, Pencils, Pens, Rulers, and Solar Calculators

Flash Cards:

(English) Alphabet Wall Charts:

(English) Math and World Maps

Text/Reading Books:

(English) Age Appropriate Story Books

Educational Games/Toys:

Connect Four, Puzzles, Scrabble, and Stuffed Animals/Soft Toys

Sports/Outdoor Activity:

Frisbees, Jump Ropes, Deflated Netball/Basketballs, Rugby Balls, Soccer Balls, Team

Uniforms/Knits for Soccer, and Tennis Balls

Clothing/Shoes:

New Bras, New or Gently Used Children's Clothing and Shoes, and New Underwear

Linens:

Bath Towels, Bed Linens, Light Blankets, and Linen Sets

Health/Personal Grooming:

Band-Aids, Bars of Soap, Sanitary Napkins, Shampoos, Toothbrushes, and Toothpaste

There will be a suitcase in the office to place donations. We have included textas for

children to sign their name on the case, so the children of Fiji will know that the children

of Bonbeach Primary School are thinking of them!

Many thanks
