Nation’s first Mining Art Gallery opens to the public

The triumphant tones of one of County Durham’s oldest colliery bands marked the official opening of the region’s new Mining Art Gallery on Saturday, October 21st.The first gallery of its kind in the country, the Mining Art Gallery in Bishop Auckland Market Place has been created by The Auckland Project, in part-nership with Dr Robert McManners OBE and Gillian Wales, to celebrate and preserve a unique element of the UK’s cultural heritage.Ferryhill Town Band marked the event by filling Bishop Auckland Market Place with the poignant and traditional music they have been performing since 1909, while visitors of all ages gathered together in the town centre to see the gallery opened to the public for the first time.At noon the Mining Art Gallery was officially opened by Chairman of The Auckland Project, Jonathan Ruffer alongside

Dr Robert McManners and Gillian Wales, who have gifted more than 400 pieces from their Gemini Collection of Mining Art to the gallery.Dr McManners said: “Coal mining wasn’t just a job, it was a way of life and in this gallery are the under-ground scenes the miners wanted to articulate alongside the community life, the long term-friend-ships and pride.“Heritage doesn’t have to be something which is fossilised in the past, it’s something we can take to the future and tell people about in this new gallery.”After the opening ceremony and throughout the celebratory after-noon, visitors enjoyed free entry to the gallery, filled with original artefacts and powerful artworks by mining artists such as Tom McGuinness and Norman Cornish. And outside, in the Market Place, youngsters got to grips with their region’s cultural history in free

Mining Art activities in the Creative Corner marquee led by members of The Auckland Project’s Engage-ment Team. The camaraderie and strong bonds of colliery towns and villages were brought back to life at the Mining and Memories stall, where visitors shared and recorded their memories and experiences of mining life for posterity. And all ages enjoyed hearing tales from the coalfield as local musician Gareth Davies-Jones per-formed new songs he has created by working with groups across the region to turn mining stories into music.Since October 22nd, the gallery is open daily, from 10am-4pm. Tickets are £4 for adults, £3 concessions, and free for Under 16s, National Art Pass holders and HHA members. A special half price intro-ductory ticket offer is also available for residents of postcode areas, DL4, DL13, DL14, DL15 and DL16.

King James WI, assisted by volunteers, have crocheted and knitted over 3,000 poppies to form the display which adorned the balcony at Bishop Auckland Town Hall.

Spectacular display launches town’s annual Poppy Appeal

A display of over 3,000 knitted and crocheted poppies adorned the balcony of Bishop Auckland Town Hall on Thursday 26th October after members of King James WI, assisted by more than 50 volunteers, created the spectacular work ahead of this year’s Poppy Appeal. The volunteers have been working since January on the project, which was unveiled by Town Mayor, Cllr Adam Zair.Speaking at the launch of the appeal, Cllr Zair praised the volunteers: “Thank you to Bishop Auckland King James WI, who were central to the instigation of the idea in

the first place and also for their help in knitting and crocheting all of these poppies,” he said.“And to Ann Williams-Maughan, Andrea Nicol and Valerie Armstrong who are the driving force behind this.“On behalf of these ladies and the town, I’d also like to thank all the volunteers that have helped achieve this impressive memorial.“I understand that Ann, Andrea, Valerie and poppy appeal volunteers will be out and about in Bishop Auckland over the next week working hard co-or-dinating this year’s poppy appeal.“They did fantastically well

last year, when the collec-tion in Bishop Auckland was under threat. They stepped in to organise the appeal and raised over £40,000 - an absolutely phenomenal amount which reflects their dedication and the generosity of the people of Bishop Auckland.“I’m sure the town will again support the Poppy Appeal and the Royal British Legion, in recognis-ing the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces commu-nity, past and present. “By wearing a poppy, we are not only remembering the fallen: but supporting a new generation of veterans and Service personnel that need our support.”

New apprentices at The Auckland Project

said. The latest round of re-cruitment takes the total number of apprentices at The Auckland Project to 25, with more recruits due to join by the end of the year.Emma Milgate, from Evenwood, applied for an apprenticeship with the Curatorial team, after completing a Stepping Stones to Employment course.Led by County Durham Housing Group and The Auckland Project, the free course is designed to boost confidence, develop new skills and enhance employ-ability.Emma had been unem-ployed for six months when she began the programme and is now mid-way through an Open Uni-versity degree in History

and Religion. She said: “Stepping Stones gave me a lot of confidence.“My passion is history and my degree fits in nicely with the apprenticeship so I’m really looking forward to getting started now.”The new apprenticeships have been co-ordinated by Auckland Academy, a part-nership between Bishop Auckland College and The Auckland Project.Of the 17 new positions, eight have been funded thanks to National Lottery players via the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), while the four horticultural ap-prenticeships and five catering apprenticeships have been funded by The Weston Bursaries, part of The Garfield Weston Foun-dation.It is expected that sixty apprenticeships will be created over the next three years.

Protesters campaigning for supermarket giant Sainsbury’s to continue supporting Fairtrade products gathered at the store’s Bishop Auckland branch as part of a day of protest across the country on Saturday 28th October.“We handed in a letter of protest to the local manager,” said Rev John Purdy. “As the campaign states: ‘Tea can be powerful. Every Fairtrade cuppa makes a difference to the lives of tea farmers and workers in some of the world’s poorest com-munities. Sainsbury’s are

weakening this power by ditching the Fairtrade Mark from some of their own-brand tea and replacing it with a ‘Fairly Traded’ label. ‘They’ve decided to abandon Fairtrade and pilot their own scheme.‘ Tea farmers will no longer be able to decide for themselves how to spend the money that they have earned through the Fair-trade Premium. ‘ It’s also very likely to mislead customers who may think ‘Fairly Traded’ is the same as independent Fairtrade certification. It’s not’.”

Students at King James I Academy receive careers advice.

King James Careers Fair helps students plan their future

With visitors from a wide range of national and local businesses and organisa-tions, the annual Careers Fair at King James was a huge success. The whole-day event gave students the opportunity to speak to representatives from a diverse selection of industries, from Engineer-ing and Law to Healthcare and Communications. This was an excellent way to help young people begin thinking about what

industry they might like to enter as a career, and to focus on the GCSE and A’ Level qualifications they will need to achieve in order to reach their goal. Students were keen to discover more about the increasing number of Ap-prenticeship opportuni-ties that are offered by local employers and many received excellent advice on how to make their ap-plication stand out from the crowd in such a com-

petitive market. This year, more Colleges and Universities than ever took part in the event and students were impressed by the wide choice of modern courses on offer.By discussing individual strengths and preferences with pupils, representa-tives were able to suggest courses that may be of interest and advise them on the careers that they could pursue with special-ist qualifications.

The next public meeting of the Bishop Auckland Town Team will take place at the 4 Clocks Centre, 154a Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland on Thursday 16th November.Guest speakers will also be in attendance to provide updates on what is happen-ing in the town.
