Lord may have your answers.Join the bestselling author (Forever Barbie, Astro Turf) for a breakfast discussion ofThe Accidental Feminist, which profiles the life and legend of Liz—Oscar-nominatedactress, lifelong activist, and, as Lord makes perfectly clear, a ground-breakingfeminist (if an accidental one). Her feminism, Lord demonstrates, was evidenced bythe roles Taylor chose as she subtly, yet thoroughly, advanced women’s causes, starting from the very beginning, e.g., when her character in National Velvet battledgender discrimination, and continued throughout her career.

A Special Veterans Day CommemorationMORNING COFFEE CONVERSATION • 9:30 A.M.Alex Kershaw, The Liberator: One World War II Soldier’s 500-DayOdyssey from the Beaches of Sicily to the Gates of Dachau

Hear the story of Felix Sparks from author/historian Alex Kershaw: it’s one of thosestories that sounds like it was lifted from a Hollywood screenplay. Sparks enteredthe war as second lieutenant and rose to the rank of colonel during his 10-yearcareer. And during that career, no battalion saw more action than Sparks’ 157THInfantry Regiment of the 45TH Division, which went from fighting on the beachesof Sicily to being the first through the gates of the infamous Dachau concentrationcamp. Author Alex Kershaw has made his name by putting a human face on WW2,and with the story of Felix Sparks, he may have delivered his masterpiece.

This powerful collection, in which the danger slowly escalatesand becomes ever more apparent, is often credited with exposing the Americanpublic to the true dangers of Nazism. This staged reading will serve as a livingreminder of George Santayana’s famous warning to us all: “Those who cannotremember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Address Unknown willstar San Diego favorite, David Ellenstein.

Grant gave the order to expel all Jewishpeople in the territory he oversaw. The order was quickly rejectedby President Lincoln, but it would follow Grant until his dyingdays. Why did he do it? Daniel Gordis, The Promise of Israel: Why Its Seemingly Greatest WeaknessIs Actually Its Greatest StrengthSunday, November 11 • 7:30 P.M.

Connect with Dr. Daniel Gordis, “one of Israel's most thoughtful observers” (Alan Dershowitz) and Senior Vice President andKoret Distinguished Fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem, when he shares excerpts from The Promise of Israel. Critics ofIsrael would say that no country devoted to a single faith and culture can stay prosperous. Dr. Gordis says they’re wrong, and cites endless examples of freedom and fortune found in Israel that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. He alsooffers this radical thought to the Palestinians: perhaps their own best interests would be served by emulating Israel’s examplerather than trying to end its existence.Admission: $16/JCC Member; $19/Non-Member
