RIEANNA DUNCAN, SHAMAR GRIFFITH AND MARILYN MONTOYA are three students from the Youth Farm at the High School for Public Service in Brooklyn who are directly engaged in organic farming on the one-acre farm, running a farmer’s market, and leading farm tours and community volunteer days. The students delivering the keynote today are part of a year-round “Go Green!” class, focusing on environmental and social activism and using the farm as part of their hands-on classroom. These students have shown a passion for urban agriculture and food justice, and their experiences at The Youth Farm have been transformative for them and many of their fellow students. Along with the After School Farm Club and Summer Youth Leaders employment program on the Youth Farm, they are part of a growing youth movement that is the future of gardening and farming in this city, across the nation and all over the world. They are honored to take the mantle from so many urban green pioneers and help lead us into the next vital wave of community gardening and urban farming.
