a selection of the highlights

Dear Kuehne + Nagel Partners,First things first: congratulations on your company’s 125th

anniversary! I believe every employee of the logisticsservice provider can be proud of working for such a greatcompany with such a long and eventful history! As a Global Partner, Kuehne + Nagel is one of our mostimportant customers. Of course, on principle it is part ofLufthansa Cargo’s philosophy to give every customer thesame level of attention. Nevertheless, with this specialissue of our magazine “planet” we wanted to make anexception – as a token of our appreciation toward ourcooperative partner of many years standing and all its employees. On this significant occasion we felt it wasimportant, among other things, to show you again howoutstandingly well we work together on a daily basis. We also wanted to look back on the 15 years of “planet’s”existence, during which we have consistently devoted ourattention to people in your company and to joint projects(pages 14 to 19).Of course, we do not just want to wallow quietly in nostal-gia. In fact, it seems to me that for Kuehne + Nagel it isquite typical that your 125th birthday is being celebrated byexplicitly looking to the future. As an image of this, I findthe anniversary logo, “125+”, works extremely well – aplus in terms of entrepreneurial spirit, innovative capacityand the ability to learn. For me, this manifests itself forinstance in the blanket introduction of the eAWB or thecommitment of the Kuehne Foundation to training thelogistics managers of the future, for example at theKuehne Logistics University in Hamburg. At the same time, one fact strikes me over and over again: the people ofKuehne + Nagel always keep their feet on the ground. Andthey know that to achieve success youhave to stick together, fight and act.Klaus-Michael Kühne did this in 1992and 1998, for example, when hecourageously bought back the bulk ofthe company’s shares in order to beable to retake control of the family-runcompany himself. I hope you really enjoy “your” specialissue of “planet”, and I salute you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Alexis von Hoensbroech

1890On 1 July, August Kühne

(1855–1932) and Friedrich Gottlieb

Nagel (1864–1907) establish a

freight forwarding business and

commission agency in Bremen

which, after the death of Nagel,

passes into the sole ownership of

Kühne.

1909Kühne acquires the “Von

Kapff’sche Burg” – the new

headquarters – next to the (at the

time) second main Weser bridge.

1939–45Like other companies that were

already in existence before 1939,

Kuehne + Nagel is integrated

into the wartime economy. The

company is active beyond

Germany’s borders in the occu-

pied territories and primarily

undertakes supply deliveries for

the army. On behalf of the imperial

government it deals with the

transportation of the confiscated

goods of people being persecuted

on political and racial grounds.

For the most part this involves

furniture. The company explains

in a statement: “Kuehne + Nagel

is conscious of the shameful

events during the period of the

Third Reich and greatly regrets

the fact that it carried out some

of its work on behalf of the Nazi

regime.”

1950–60New branch operations and

associated companies are estab-

lished in Argentina, Canada, the

Netherlands, Iraq, Switzerland and

Lebanon.

1963Founder’s grandson At the age of

26, Klaus-Michael Kühne becomes

a personally liable partner and co-

partner.

1969Alfred Kühne moves the head-

quarters site to Schindellegi.

1990Kuehne + Nagel takes over the

GDR transport combine Deutrans.

2005With the introduction of new

standardized airfreight products,

Kuehne + Nagel meets its

customers’ growing demand

for plannable and controllable

airfreight processes.

2006The Kuehne Foundation agrees

to finance the establishment of

a Professorship of International

Logistics Management at the

ETH Zurich.

2007Following a successful two-

month pilot phase, Kuehne +

Nagel puts its Europe-wide

groupage network into operation

with daily line-haul services

between 38 countries across

the continent.

2008Kuehne + Nagel completes the

global rollout of the new version of

its logistics information system “KN

2009Opening of one of the Kuehne +

Nagel Group’s largest logistics

centres in Obergeorgswerder in the

south of Hamburg. This underlines

the company’s growth-oriented

business strategy and its commit-

ment to the Elbe metropolis.

2010Despite the global economic

crisis, the Kuehne + Nagel Group

delivers solid results in 2009 and

gains market share in all business

units.

2014KN FreightNet is Kuehne +

Nagel’s new integrated web

application for quotations, booking

and tracking services.

2015On the occasion of the company’s

anniversary, Kuehne + Nagel

sends two 40-foot containers on

a trip around the world. On four

multimedia stations inside the

containers, visitors can discover

information about the history,

service portfolio, innovations

and career options at the

Kuehne + Nagel Group.

Airfreight was already playing a role in Kuehne + Nagel’s business at an early

stage – today the company is the second largest airfreight forwarder in the world

Mr. Scharwath, when was the very first time in your life

you heard of Kuehne + Nagel?

It was 1992. At the end of my studies I was approached by

representatives of the company.

Straight afterwards you joined the company.

What has been your most instructive experience of

the last 23 years?

Change will come. You always have to prepare yourself for it.

When you look back – of what are you and your team

particularly proud?

Kuehne + Nagel always has a clear strategy that is consistently

implemented, clear communication between everyone involved

and an enjoyable working environment. In my view, these are the

most important ingredients for a successful operation.

Is there also something you would on

no account do again?

I believe you can learn from every mistake.

What fascinates you about airfreight?

There are several things: the dynamics of airfreight, the global

activities, colleagues from a very wide range of cultures and the

high demands of customers.

Where do you see the most important airfreight

markets in 2050? Still in the Near East? Or will Africa

have caught up?

I was just speaking about changes. In my view, it’s not so relevant

to guess the geographical developments exactly. Rather, you

have to prepare yourself for every eventuality – even the Antarctic

route might become a race track. Above all, what is important is

Tradition meetsthe futureKuehne + Nagel is using the opportunity of the company’s

anniversary to look back as well as forward. Questions to Tim Scharwath,

Executive Vice President Airfreight

Partners for decades: Kuehne + Nagel and Lufthansa

PSUK0115_08 KN-Interview_Layout 1 10.06.15 16:46 Seite 10

Page 11: th anniversary Kuehne + Nagel 2015 Happy birthday!

that in 2050 airfreight will still have exactly the same relevance for

world trade as it enjoys today. I’m convinced of this!

What do you value about the partnership with

Lufthansa Cargo?

The partnership between Kuehne + Nagel and Lufthansa Cargo

has already lasted for a very long time and links both companies

around the world. Our collaboration is marked by open communi-

cation and great mutual respect.

Airfreight doesn’t enjoy a reputation of being particularly

innovative. In your view, what are the reasons for this?

In my opinion, this is not correct. Without numerous innovations in

the areas of quality, security and sustainability, airfreight would not

be carrying high-value products today.

What do you expect of a carrier when it comes

to innovation?

In terms of innovation, we expect a carrier to be prepared to

dedicate itself to the requirements of the market.

Digitalization is an important aspect that Kuehne + Nagel

and Lufthansa Cargo are jointly trying to promote. How do

you view these efforts?

As far as this subject is concerned, among carriers I rate

Lufthansa Cargo as a leading company. For Kuehne + Nagel, this

is the prerequisite for developing joint solutions in the area of

digitalization. We are definitely prepared for this.

On the one hand, Kuehne + Nagel is a family business

and, on the other, a huge concern with its sights firmly set

on the future. How do you resolve this balancing act of

preserving your identity but nevertheless changing at the

same time?

Kuehne + Nagel has a corporate culture that is strongly shaped

by family and forms the basis for the advancement of the com-

pany. Based on the values of the

founding family, we are always

striving to progress.

What are your hopes and

wishes for the company as you

look to the future?

I hope Kuehne + Nagel will consis-

tently continue to pursue the path it

has successfully followed. To this

end I want employees,

customers and suppliers

to see us as their

partner of choice.

Rapid, guaranteed“Time is money” always holds true in logistics, but the motto applies in particular when,

for example, vital spare parts for the shipping, oil and gas industries are involved.

Kuehne + Nagel in Norway relies on Lufthansa Cargo’s Emergency.Solutions

A helicopter whirs over the Kuehne + Nagel site in the bay of

Tananger on its way to one of the oil rigs out in the North Sea.

Moored special-purpose ships sway in the icy fall wind.

Anyone driving from here by car through the Nordic landscape to nearby

Stavanger, passing wooden huts and crossing a fjord bridge, would not

get the impression of being in the center of the Norwegian oil industry.

There is very little indication that specialist firms and warehouses in the

region produce and stock extremely important parts for the oil, gas and

shipping industries all over the world.

Kuehne + Nagel is a long-standing partner of many of the firms

that are based here. The logistics service provider has 80 employees

stationed near Stavanger, 16 of whom work in airfreight. The warehouse is

located alongside the office building. Numerous individual parts are

stored there: pump accessories, compressors, drill heads, steel cables,

electronics parts, and a whole lot more. If one of these parts breaks down

in field operations anywhere in the world, there is a red alert. Replacement

material has to be made available within the shortest possible time. If an

oil rig has to shut down or if a ship is held up somewhere, every hour of

delay means additional costs of many thousands of euros.

Fast logistics solutions for large and outsized shipments

“Particularly in the oil & gas and ships spares segment, we have a lot of

urgent shipments,” says Synnøve Thormodsæter from Bergen. She is

responsible for airfreight at Kuehne + Nagel in Norway. “Logistically, our

job is particularly complicated when it comes to large and outsized

parts,” she explains. In such cases, the phones don’t stop ringing. A lot of

organizing and improvising is required. Under pressure, various options

have to be checked and immediate decisions taken.

Lufthansa Cargo has repeatedly been confronted with emergency

situations and correspondingly urgent assignments from a variety of

industries in recent years. The company therefore decided to offer

a product that specifically caters for such cases. Its desired qualities:

highest priority, short-term availability and absolute reliability. The result:

Emergency.Solutions. “Our product management developed intelligent

ground processes under the keyword ‘planned emergency situation’

in order to reduce improvisation to a minimum in an emergency case,”

explains Christoph Harneid, Country Manager Norway at Lufthansa

Cargo.

In Emergency.Solutions, Lufthansa Cargo guarantees that the ex-

press shipment is taken at short notice to its destination on the next

possible flight. “We ensure that short-term access is guaranteed for an

Emergency.Solutions shipment. In an absolute emergency, we would

even make an entire freighter available,” says Harneid. Lufthansa Cargo

brings along the best credentials for such an exquisite premium prod-

uct. The transfer times at the airport are kept extremely short thanks

to well-coordinated processes. Direct transshipment from one aircraft to

another is ensured without having to take the detour via the transit

warehouse. The shipment can be shipped with just one air waybill and

one invoicing channel. And a team in Frankfurt keeps an eye on the

shipment during its entire transportation.

In December, Kuehne + Nagel was commissioned to supply large

parts to Singapore within three days for the repair of a special-purpose

vessel heliport. With a length of over five meters and weighing 1,280 kilo-

grams, short-term transportation from Stavanger would no longer have

been possible. The shipowner would have had to pay high contractual

penalties. By choosing Emergency.Solutions and thus the highest prioriti-

zation it was possible to organize punctual delivery via Frankfurt. “With

Emergency.Solutions the exception becomes the rule, but Lufthansa

Cargo has defined clear procedures for this exception in advance,” says

Thormodsæter. “In this business, partners who have such flexible plan-

ning are exactly what we need.” p

“Logistically, it’s a tremendous challenge to transport an urgently required shipment

without delay”: Synnøve Thormodsæter, responsible for airfreight at Kuehne + Nagel,

Advice to the new generation 4/2003

Klaus-Michael Kühne is a passionate patron of the

new generation of logistics professionals. In this

“planet” interview, the majority owner and grandson

of the founder revealed the qualities students at “his”

universities have to bring with them: “In my view,

single-mindedness and a rigorous approach are

important virtues. It’s not just about knowing a lot but

also being able to assert yourself in business life.”

People.Statements.Figures The logistics professionals of Kuehne + Nagel have featured regularly in “planet”

since the first issue. Over a period of 15 years, the editorial staff has consistently

interviewed employees around the world for its articles. Here is a selection

First in HongKong 1/2000

In the cover story of the very first issue of

“planet”, Kuehne + Nagel plays a key role.

Location: Hong Kong. Sector: the textile

industry. Customer: the Otto trading group.

The background to the story was the integra-

tion of the services of carrier and freight

forwarder through the “business partnership

program”. Holger Beyer, at the time National

Manager at Kuehne + Nagel in Hong Kong,

spoke the prophetic words: “The greatest

potential for progress is in the area of electro-

nic data exchange. We will organize this

much more efficiently in the coming years.”

Worked hisway up 4/2001

“planet” talked to CEO Klaus Herms

about the consequences of 9/11. And

about his grasp of management. In

response to the question “How do you

run Kuehne + Nagel?” he replied: “With

pleasure! The important things are a

clear objective, a clear strategy as well

as clear structures and responsibilities.”

Herms came to the company as a

trainee in 1968 and retired on 30 June

2009.

Together in the USA 2/2004

The partnership between Kuehne + Nagel and

Lufthansa Cargo works outstandingly well through -

out the world. In 2003, the Swiss company trans -

ferred its handling operation in Atlanta to Fracht -

kranich. “This collaboration works just great, I would

do it over and over,” Juergen Gentzke, Regional

Vice President Southeast Region USA of Kuehne +

Nagel, said at the time to “planet”. Incidentally, he

still really likes it there – he’s now held his post for

27 years!

Rush of speed 1/2006

In the “planet” column “Feedback”, logistics professionals from

around the world have given insights into their everyday

working lives. Tadgh Meaney, for example. “I like the speed in

our industry that demands rapid thinking and quick decisions,”

said the Managing Director at Kuehne + Nagel in Singapore.

The Irishman is now the President of Kuehne + Nagel Japan.

The best partner 2/2006

Kuehne + Nagel was honored with the “planet

Award of Partner Excellence 2006”. “We are

delighted with this award, it really underscores

our many years of excellent collaboration with

Lufthansa Cargo,” explained Reinhard Lange

(left), then still COO Seafreight and Airfreight.

Dr. Andreas Otto (right), at the time Board

Member Marketing and Sales at Lufthansa

Cargo, was equally pleased –

about the joint sales success,

the profitability as well as the

professionalism and loyalty of

his partner.

Growth inSwedish 1/2007

In 2006, the td.Flash share of tonnage that Kuehne

+ Nagel carried at Arlanda airport with Lufthansa

Cargo was a cool 30 percent. The Swedish

market was booming –

and the Head of Airfreight

there, Anita Lagerberg,

was focusing mainly on the

lucrative premium products

of the pharmaceutical

industry. “planet” visited this

energetic woman of action.

Unique boom 1/2009

In 2008, KN Airlift GmbH flew around 11,000 tonnes of air-

freight from Frankfurt to Brazil. In 2004, the figure was just

4,000, in 2007 already 9,100 tonnes. A boom of unique

proportions, the like of which Managing Director Hans Fischer

had never before experienced, as he admitted to “planet”. His

strategy: to charter an aircraft jointly with Lufthansa Cargo,

flying to Curitiba twice a week. The project resulted in a win-

win situation for both partners.

Lange talks turkey 1/2009

“planet” crisis talks at Frankfurt Airport. At the beginning

of 2009 Reinhard Lange (right) took over as

Chairman of the Management Board at

Kuehne + Nagel. “The timing could have been

better – quite clearly,” he confessed to Dr.

Andreas Otto (l.), then Board Member Marketing

and Sales at Lufthansa Cargo. When Lange

retired from the business on health grounds at

the end of 2013, he had in fact steered the com-

pany supremely well through the world financial

crisis. He worked for Kuehne + Nagel for 43 years.

Football World Cup in Brazil! “planet” wanted to know from

logistics professionals on the spot how the big event would

change the country. Celine Lachevre, Operations Manager Oil

& Gas at Kuehne + Nagel in Rio de Janeiro, said: “The World

Cup will be good for social harmony and deliver new jobs and

improvements such as the metro extension and other infra-

structure projects.” Her colleague Thiago Raymonde, Key

Account Manager, recalled his grandfather, who studied law

instead of becoming a professional footballer: “Today, no

young person would make this choice anymore.”

eFreight gainingground 2/2012

At the Vienna hub, “planet”

met airfreight forwarders

who are forging ahead with

the digital revolution. Here,

André Morgenbrodt, Senior

Vice President Kuehne +

Nagel Eastern Europe, is

increasingly backing eFreight

in cooperation with Lufthansa

Cargo. His argument is clear:

“In the medium and long term, the cost savings due

to the gain in productivity will benefit everyone

involved.”
