Stainless Steel World Conference & Expo 2013
Message from the ChairmanIt is my pleasure as Chairman to present this Advance Conference Programme for the 9th edition of the Stainless Steel World Conference & Expo.
The Steering Committee discussions were intense and passionate in defining the main topics to be covered and in selecting the papers to be presented from the large number of submissions. As mentioned in the “Call for Papers”, we chose to highlight topics that connect end-users, manufacturers, fabricators, produ-cers, distributors, and engineers. These different views generate synergies that allow projects to progress.
The main selected themes focus on :- Economic materials, which are easier to use and allow the continuing growth of the use of stainless
steels in all environments for more than fifty years;- The development of new solid and cladded products already on the market or in development.
Just as in previous editions, various workshops will be offered to provide a basis for discussion, to share views and experiences on topics that are always ongoing, like market trends, adding value in the supply chain, QA/QC, welding challenges, stainless steels in the urea industry, but also less common topics like new manufacturing techniques and 3D metallurgy in castings, forgings, and hot isostatic pressed pro-ducts, which are also very important for our community.
We must also underline the great quality of the presentations in the plenary conference programme. They offer an innovative synthesis on the current state and evolution of stainless steels in the different sectors (research, marketing, development, application and new markets).
Beyond the excellence of all these papers, the Stainless Steel World 2013 Conference presents the op-portunity for you to create and develop your network. This is one of the main advantages of the event. A ten minutes conversation with some of the many experts attending might prevent months (sometimes years) of difficult tests and studies. Come and share your questions and experiences, which will help us all develop further projects.
See you in Maastricht!
François DupoironChairman of the Stainless Steel World 2013 ConferenceTOTAL Refining and Chemicals

Why come to Stainless Steel World 2013 ?
As the world’s industries become global, so companies find themselves increasingly marketing their products and services in lands and within cultures that are less familiar to them. What appears easy and simple to market at home suddenly becomes difficult abroad. How do you overcome these obstacles and how do you quickly gain the knowledge to ensure that you are as successful abroad in your marketing and sales as at home? What do you need to learn to make this a smooth and successful transition? Similarly, even for companies operating at home, training staff to perform well at an exhibition can be a daunting affair. Basic questions like: What do new staff need to know and learn to be successful?, How do I make the most out of exhibiting at a show?, and am I at the right show to exhibit? can be troublesome. To help you make all these transitions John Fowler offers a half-day course to improve your exhibitor skills. The itinerary of this half a day course is as follows:
Registrations can be made and prices can be seen for this independent course on the Stainless Steel World Conference Registration Form online: www.stainless-steel-world.net/ssw2013 or by viewing the appropriate section on the Conference Registration Form in this booklet (page 16) and sending it to us at: [email protected] or faxing to +31 575 511 099.
1 How to exhibit in a foreign country: allowing for cultural differences
2 How to choose the right exhibition to attend 3 How to plan for an exhibition 4 Invite clients to visit you at the exhibition,
but who and how? 5 What factors make a good stand/booth 6 The importance of the staff on the stand and
how to maximize their sales impact? 7 Stand behaviour – good and bad 8 Using the stand as part of the selling effort 9 Making better introductions 10 Lead generation and capture 11 Follow up
Improving your Exhibitor SkillsNovember 11th, 14:00 pm – 17:00 pm

After giving a very successful introductory course to stainless steels in 2011, Alan Harrison of the British Stainless Steel Association is back once again this year to introduce stainless steels to more newcomers to the industry as well as providing a more advanced course for interested parties. The topics covered will be as follows:
Registrations can be made and prices can be seen for this course on the Stainless Steel World Conference Registration Form online: www.stainless-steel-world.net/ssw2013 or by viewing the appropriate section of the Conference Registration Form in this booklet (page 16) and sending it to us to register at: [email protected] or faxing to +31 575 511 099.
Tuesday, November 12th, 9:00 –12:00 am: Basic Course
The World of Stainless Steels: A brief survey of applications. Why is Stainless Steel Stainless?: Effect of chromium, the passive layer. Why Use Stainless Steels?: Corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, range of surface finishes, hygienic properties, formability, weldability, magnetic properties. What is in Stainless Steel?: Key elements and effect on properties. Structure of Stainless Steels: Ferrite, austenite, martensite structure. How this leads to the five basic types including duplex and PH steels. The Five Basic Types: Advantages and disadvantages. Grades illustrating Each Basic Type: Compositions for reference rather than detailed discussion. Heat Treatment: Appropriate treatments for each type, solution annealing, hardening and tempering, precipitation hardening. Mechanical Properties: Tensile strength, impact toughness, hardness, how to read a test certificate. Magnetic Properties: Clear up misunderstandings. Can’t use magnetic properties as a guide to “quality”.Group Exercise: Light hearted quiz. Each group devises questions for the other teams to answer.
Tuesday, November 12th, 14:00 -17:00 More Advanced Course
Corrosion: Main types, general, pitting, crevice, galvanic, chloride SCC, sulphide stress cracking, MIC (brief reference), corrosion of carbon steel contamination. Effect of surface finish. High-temperature processes, oxidation, carburisation, sulphidation. Welding: Comparison with carbon steel, effect of physical properties, effect of different microstructures on weldability (duplex dealt with in next section), effect of carbon. More on duplex: “Seesaw” illustration of duplex steels, austenitisers on one end, ferritisers on the other. Simple in principle BUT complex metallurgy leads to problems with phase balance, unwanted phases and effect on mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, effect on processing, effect on welding. Interpretation of typical complex test certificate including NORSOK and NACE requirements. More on fabrication: Forming and pressing, machining. Material Selection: Factors for material selection, case studies for a grade from each of 5 main types.
Learning about Stainless Steels
November 13th, 10:00 am – 15:00 pm
Following a first successful fabrication seminar two years ago at the Stainless Steel World Conference & Expo Meeting, Euro Inox will organize an event module for the second time this year. It will be inspired by fre-quently asked questions, which designers and fabrica-tors ask when contacting the Euro Inox helpdesk. The topics were selected to address practical issues: What functional integration can be achieved using innovative products like stainless steel sections? What are reliable criteria for the selection of optimal grades and surfaces? What is new in joining and surface finishing? Delegates will have the opportunity to visit the stainless steel exhibition to round off the day.
Preliminary topics are:
Spoilt for choice: Stainless steel sections for mechanical and structural engineering• Laser-welded sections• Roll-formed sections• Hot-formed sections
Registrations can be made and prices can be seen for this independent Euro Inox event on the Stainless Steel World Conference Registration Form online: www.stainless-steel-world.net/ssw2013 or by viewing the appropriate section on the Conference Registration Form in this booklet (page 16) and sending it to us at: [email protected] or faxing to +31 575 511 099.
How to select grades and surfaces• A new grade selection method for stainless steel in
structural building applications• Evaluating the susceptibility of stainless steel surfaces
to corrosion• Hygiene criteria for the selection of materials and
surfaces
Successful fabrication• Grade substitution and its implications for fabrication
parameters• A new approach to the removal of heat tint• A practical approach to the adhesive bonding of
stainless steel
