Recently the community suffered a sad loss in the sudden passing of Paddy Murray late of Beechwood Lawns. Paddy was involved in the formation of the No Name Club which allowed teenag-ers the opportunity to meet and socialise in a safe environment. He also assisted in the supervision of a youths disco held weekly in the Community Centre. He formed a junior soccer club viz., Shields United Football club for the youth of the village. Paddy was an active member of the Rathcoole Community Council for many years and during that time became Chairperson of the Rathcoole Community Council. During his tenure as Chairperson the community fought and won a major cam-

paign which succeeded in preventing a road from going through our lovely Park. He also was on an Alliance team representing the 4 districts viz., Saggart, Rathcoole, Newcastle and Brittas to tackle local and environmental issues. Paddy was a superb singer and was instrumental in organising a Talent competition which took place in Septem-ber during Community week. In later times he assisted in the organisation of the Senior Citizens Party which still takes place annually in the Centre. On behalf of the Community Council and the people of Rathcoole Saggart Newcastle, Brittas and surrounding areas we extend our sincere sympathy to Paddys’ extended family. We owe a great debt of thanks to Paddy for all his involvement and initiatives in the Community during his time and he will be greatly missed by his family, his colleagues in the Rathcoole Community Council, friends and neighbours. Rathcoole Community Centre Opens New Extension

S aturday 10th of September was the

official opening of the new Extension to Rathcoole Community Centre. The opening was performed by local resident Louis Fitzgerald of the Fitzgerald Group and was also attended by TD’s Robert Dowds and Joanna Tuffy of Labour and and Councillor Therese Ridge of Fine Gael.

F ood and refreshments were provided by Community Centre staff with generous donations from local shops and businesses. The new extension almost doubles the

size to the centre and includes a large multipurpose hall, Youth Café, Games Room, Community IT training facility a Crèche and meeting rooms.

use the Centre facilities including the Rathcoole Baton Twirlers, Karate Club, Tae Kwan Do and Irish Dancers. Among the other groups present were the Active Retired Group, Foroige (who operate the Youth Café at be centre), Weight Watchers and Kettle Bells.

A continuous learning centre set up in Rathcoole has been described as a “dream come true” for one of the leaders. Sean Reid has been involved with the community centre in the area for many years and has also worked as a youth leader in Rathcoole. Now Sean will head up a committee tasked with providing IT learning for the whole community. Sean told The Echo: “We managed to secure a grant centre with 22 state-of–the-art, touch screen computers, an overhead projector and interactive whiteboard for teaching. “A new extension has been built onto the side of the community centre and is now open. People from Rathcoole, Saggart, Brittas, Newcastle and Glen na Smol can avail for the IT courses which began at the end of September at the centre free of charge. Sean explained that four courses will be on offer initially with more courses to follow over time. The free courses available from the end of September include four computer courses - one for beginners, one for advanced and one ECDL course. Each of the three courses for beginners, intermediate and advanced will be 20-hour courses which normally cost €250. The ECDL course is a 60-hour course which will take place at the new IT Continuous Learning Centre and usually costs €600, but is free of charge for residents. Sean said:” A lot of the guys have been at the centre for 10 or 11 years and we have been improving it every year—it is not just IT classes, it will be community, IT and continuous learning courses.” Funding is provided by Fingal Leader Partnership and a limited number of places where available for each courses we hope to be running more of these courses in the New year. Wednesday 6th July saw the opening of a new Foróige Youth Café at Rathcoole Community Centre. The opening was performed by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald TD in front of an enthusiastic audience of young people and parents. Following an introduction from Foróige CEO Sean Campbell and Rathcoole Community Council Chairperson Ronan McDermott, the Minister performed the official opening praising this “fabulous facility that is going to provide the young people throughout Rathcoole with a fun and safe place to hang out” The Minister thanked the previous centre manager Sean Reid, the current manager Tricia O’Halloran, Ronan McDermott, Foróige and all those who

contributed their time and effort to make this such a success. The new café boasts a wide range of facilities including Table Tennis, Pool, Fussball, Gaming, a Café, kitchen area and a shop. “I ran this campaign last year in Newcastle and felt it was really important to continue it into this year. The newly extended Rathcoole Community Centre was a fabulous venue and the staff and management there did a great job in making today possible,” said Minister Frances Fitzgerald. “It was great to see so many women turn out to support the event. The message was simple – cancer won’t wait, everything else can. We had expert advice on hand from the Marie Keating Foundations’ Breast Health Nurse, well known life coach Brian Colburt and RTE nutritionist Aveen Bannon who explained the importance of posi-tive attitudes and healthy eating,” continued Frances Fitzgerald. 3 lucky women, Charlotte Joyce from Calliaghstown, Mary Rooney from Newcastle and Ann Coventry from New-castle, were chosen from the audience to be restyled by Anna from Amie Rose Boutique in Citywest Shopping Centre, who provided the audience with great tips on how to dress for your shape and choose colours that suit you. The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs went on to thank all of the local women who helped make the day possible – those who donated raffle prizes, those who made sure people donated them, the women who baked and helped spread the word among the local clubs and societies and Avoca who donated fabulous salads and culinary delights as refreshments. “Breast cancer affects one in eight women. It is a startling statistic and this month we are asking women to stand together and show solidarity as we create awareness of this dreadful disease that has affected so many women in our community. “It is so important for women to be breast aware, to be healthy and to be positive and I do hope that people took that message away with them today. Masseuses were on hand to de-stress and pamper local women and I was delighted to have received such positive feedback from those who attended. I really hope that people gained from this event,” concluded Minister Fitzgerald. Frances herself has long had a special interest in health issues. Before she entered politics Frances was a social worker on the frontline in St James’ Hospital, The Mater Hospital and the Ballymun Child and Family Centre. Frances campaigned for the nationwide extension of the mammogram service during her days as Chair of the National Women’s Council. Over 100 women from New-castle to Rathcoole, Saggart and Brittas united in Octo-ber in the name of breast cancer awareness. The event, which saw the newly extended Rathcoole Community Centre all decked out in pink, was organised by local T.D. Minis-ter Frances Fitzgerald in con-junction with the Marie Keat-ing Foundation, to mark-Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Elf the Shetland pony and all his furry and feathered friends are busy planning for Santa's arrival at Stonebrook Pet Farm this year. John and Edward the pyg-my goats and Humphrey the little calf are putting their heads together to come up with some extra special treats for all the children who visit Stonebrook this Christmas. They have already planned a live nativity scene and a free tractor/trailer ride from the farm down to Santa's village. Even with his busy schedule, Santa says he'll be so delighted to see Elf and his friends again and he'll be at Stonebrook Pet Farm from 3-6pm Saturdays and Sundays (3/4, 10/11 and 17/18) in December and on 22nd and 23rd.
