As a senior and captain, Caitlin was a standout all four years for BW and Mallorie hopes to have similar successes as a Fighting Muskie. “I sure hope I can be as good as my sister,” Mallorie said, just after her goal attempt was called back by the referee for being offsides. It would have been the Muskies only goal. The final score was 5-0. Caitlin said she caught her- self watching that play as a spectator. “I was like ‘oh my gosh – she’s scoring a goal.’ Then even before the ref called it I had a feeling it was offsides. duction of Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas on Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 5 at 2 p.m.

Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas is a series of dramatic vignettes based on Fulgham’s short stories that take a funny, warm-hearted and poignant look at the struggle to find the holiday spirit. The show has become a family-friendly tradition in the Toledo area, along-side A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker.

The Drama Society per-formances will be held in the Ebeid Student Center located on the lower level of McAlear Hall. General admission is $5 per person. For more information, con-tact Keith Ramsdell, Drama Society Advisor, at 419-517-8881.

Author Robert Fulghum has published seven best-selling books with more than 16 million copies of his various works in print and published in 27 lan-guages in 103 countries. Fulghum has also performed in two television adapta-tions of his work for PBS and was nominated for a Grammy for a spoken word production of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.

Two Sylvania residents, Cody Brant and Emily Siebeneck, participated in the Pull, one of the nation’s oldest college tra-ditions, on Saturday, Sept. 25.

The Pull, first held in 1898, is an annual fall highlight at Hope. It start-ed as a tug-of-war between the freshman and sopho-more classes for the fresh-man to earn their place on campus. Over the years, it has evolved into a grueling three-hour match during which freshman and soph-

omore teams, entrenched in shallow pits on opposite sides of the Black River, attempt to gain the most rope through their strength and stamina.

Each team had 18 stu-dents on the rope as “pull-ers,” and another 18 act-ing as guides and morale boosters, or “morales.” The Pull brings hundreds of alumni, parents and stu-dents to cheer on the “odd-” or “even-” year team. The odd-year class of 2013 won this year’s Pull. The winning team went into

the Black river and chant-ed victory songs while the losing team looked on in respect of a well fought competition.

Cody Brant, a freshman, was a puller for the class of 2014 team. He is the son of Rodney and Teresa Brant and is a graduate of Northview High School.

Emily Siebeneck, a sophomore, was a moraler for the class of 2013 team. She is the daughter of Tony and Therese Siebeneck and is a graduate of Central Catholic High School.

Sylvania residents participate in Pull at Hope College

Emily Siebeneck was the “morale” for Mark Donkersloot who was the “puller” of pit #13.

Dave Boston, Executive Director, thanked Dr. R.W. and Laurie Mills as this year’s Honorary Co-Chairs as well as the members of this year’s Honorary Committee -- Gale Astles, Cathy and Dr. Stephen Bazeley, Cindy Burgess-Folger, Michele Kania McNulty, Penny Marks, Joanne Ollivier, Pat Ruma, Byrne Stapleton, James Whiteman, and Gary Yoder -- plus the volunteers from the Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Xi Delta, and Chi Omega Sororities; the young men from St. Francis DeSales H.S.; plus the countless vol-

unteers from Weber-O’Brien, Waterville Family Physicians, Equity PlanDr. R.W. and Laurie Mills are the parents of Noah Mills who passed away at the age of six, and for whom Noah’s House was renamed. Laurie Mills, who is quite the soloist, sang that night with the Perrysburg H.S. Show Choir, under the direction of Dawn Casey, to music from Glee. Mills then introduced John and Kelly Schuck, parents of John Douglas who attends Anne Grady’s Prescribed Pediatric Center. They told of John’s life and the importance of PPC to them and John. Both Noah’s House and PPC will be the recipients of tonight’s funds.

The main entertainment, Alex DePue and Tom Gorman, enchanted guests with their amazing violin and guitar duo. The evening was amazing and guests joined together to help Anne Grady to serve the com-munity through Noah’s House, the Noah Mills Memorial Fund, and Anne Grady’s Prescribed Pediatric Center.

Ballet Theater of Toledo hosts fundraiser at Sylvania Country Club

The weather was delightful as guests gathered at Sylvania Country Club on Nov. 7 for the Nutcracker Sweets Fundraiser. The room was delightfully decorated in Nutcracker memo-rabilia and several of the danc-ers were on hand to help out Director Nigel and Anne Marie Burgoine and hosts Jason and Sonya Thompson at the event.

Delightful appetizers and scrumptious sweets were served by the staff. Live music and Nutcracker excerpts were wel-comed by the audience, both young and old alike. Many of the younger set stopped to have their picture taken with Clara and the canine star of the show Miss Grace.

The funds raised from the

Nutcracker Sweets Fundraiser go to support the mission of the Ballet Theater of Toledo and help defray costs of the upcom-ing Nutcracker performances at the Valentine Theater on Nov. 27 and Nov. 28.

Dancers who assisted at the event included Mary Bento, Emily Micsko, Tom Cobau, Erica Heath, Sarah Gray, Julie Heath, Matt Heath, Gary Micsko, Susan Micsko, Barb Gray, Sally Micsko, Kate Smith, Tegan Hack and Claire Stoll.

We request residents to place their leaves along the side of the street close to the edge of the roadway away

A town crier (or bell-man) is one who makes public announcements, and dresses elaborately by tradition dating to the 18th century. They carry a hand bell to attract attention, and used to be the means for bring-ing the news to the peo-ple. When technology replaced the need for a town crier, the position was doomed to remain only in folklore.

But the tradition was reborn, and town criers continue to ring their hand bells and shout “Oyez Oyez Oyez” all over Europe. (It’s pro-nounced oh-yay, by the way, and means “hear ye” to get people’s atten-tion.) There are only about a dozen in the United States, however, and Sylvania is fortunate to have our very own.

Michael Lieber was appointed to the posi-tion created by a City Council ordinance in 1995, and he’s been crying ever since! As town crier, he cuts rib-bons, opens festivals, leads parades, deliv-ers proclamations and kicks off conventions. He helps the community greet visiting dignitar-ies, opens sports sea-sons, and acts as ambas-sador for Sylvania. He also regularly appears at naturalization ceremo-nies in Federal Court, a special honor.

His elaborate cos-tume is authentic garb, chosen by the Sylvania Area Historical Society, representing what would have been worn by a gentleman in the 1830s, which is when Sylvania was founded.

He writes his own cries, which usually

includes ceremonial ele-ments of the time peri-od he represents. He belongs to town crier guilds and associations, and has participated in crying competitions, which he finds quite fun. As Michael begins his 16th year as Sylvania’s town crier, he fondly recalls the times his position has brought him “fame and fortune.”

He appeared in a short interview on Good Morning America, from when the show was in our area. But even more fun, was when he was flown out to Los Angeles to appear on the televi-sion show “To Tell The Truth.” Provided with a rental car, he and a few family members had a full day sightseeing, and the next day, he attended the show taping.

It was quite interest-ing, he says. It was in December, 2000, and two other men appeared with him, trying to fool the celebrity panel. Michael and the oth-ers all claimed to be a town crier, and they all wore official garb. He wore his own costume, another was attired in his extra outfit, and the third wore something the producers got from the wardrobe department. The other contestants were not supposed to be professional actors, but they did such a good job portraying him, Michael had his doubts.

The celebrity panel Michael had to face included Richard Kind, Brooke Burns, Meshach Taylor and Paula Poundstone, with host John O’Hurley.

The contestants were asked questions, like how many time had they cried, what was their most recent cry (our town crier said, the Santa Claus parade in Woodstock, Ontario), and miscellaneous details. He was advised that the less info pro-vided in answering, the better. The object of the game is to fool the celebrity panel and win. And our esteemed town crier indeed won. The three men split the $5000 prize, and he has never forgotten the excitement.

So was this profes-sional crier nervous in front of the cameras, celebrities, and audi-ence? You bet!

This past summer, Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio was selected by the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission (RSC) to facilitate one of six employ-ment demonstration projects in the state. Funded by a grant from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), the Micro Enterprise & Customized Employment Demonstration Project (MCED) is designed to help create individualized employ-ment opportunities for people with significant disabilities.

The project runs from August, 2010 until September, 2011 and will focus on 25 individuals, the goal being to have them in either customized employment or their own micro enterprise.

The MCED requires the establishment of a Community

Action Team for each project participant. The team will con-sist of vocational rehabilitation and workforce development pro-fessionals as well as individuals who are familiar with the partici-pants they are assisting. The goal of the team is to help the person gain employment.

Each project participant is referred by the Ohio RSC to Goodwill which then acts as the lead organization for the indi-vidual’s movement through the program. The first step taken by Goodwill and the Community Action Team is to lead the indi-vidual through the “discovery” process to determine what they see themselves doing for employ-ment. This is based on the indi-vidual’s interests and abilities.

Upon completion of the dis-

covery process, the individual is linked with employers in the community to explore the pos-sibility of customized employ-ment. If the participant wants to be self-employed, they are referred to Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) to learn the steps of running a busi-ness. Goodwill and the SBDC work jointly in teaching the indi-viduals such skills as accounting, budgeting, developing a business and marketing plan.

During this entire process the individual’s Community Action Team serves as their support and sounding board. Again, the goal of everyone involved is to help the individual be either self-employed or attain customized employment in the community.

The MCED project will serve

as a “living” demonstration of the customized employment and micro enterprise approach in Ohio.

There are currently 15 indi-viduals enrolled and taking part in the program. Kathy LeRoux, Goodwill’s community employ-ment services manager, is the MCED project manager and oversees its day-to-day opera-tions. “This is a wonderful, ground breaking demonstration,” says LeRoux. “All of us at Goodwill are grateful to be a part of it and feel the project will pave the way for new and exciting avenues for people with barriers to employment.”

Three ProMedica Health System home health care provid-ers are among the top perform-ing home health agencies in the United States. Toledo-based Car-ing Home Health Services and Visiting Nurse Service of Toledo, and Adrian, Mich.-based Car-ing Visiting Nurse – Lenawee/Monroe, have been named 2010 HomeCare Elite™ agencies. This recognition is given to the nation’s top 25 percent of home health care agencies and has be-come the industry standard for measuring organizational per-

formance. Winners are selected based on several areas including quality outcomes, quality of im-provement, and financial perfor-mance.

“The 2010 HomeCare Elite winners continue to demonstrate a commitment to providing their patients with the best pos-sible care while performing at the highest level,” said Amanda Twiss, CEO of OCS HomeCare. “We congratulate Caring Home Health Services in Toledo, Visit-ing Nurse Service of Toledo, and Caring Visiting Nurse – Lenaw-

ee/Monroe in Adrian on being among the top home care agen-cies in the country.”

Paula Grieb, administra-tive director, ProMedica Home Health Care, credits the ranking to the professional experience of the nursing staff, along with a focus on the quality of care deliv-ered to patients.

“We are proud to be among the top home care providers in the area and nation,” said Grieb.

The 2010 HomeCare Elite is the only performance recogni-tion of its kind in the home health

industry. The 2010 HomeCare Elite is brought to the industry by OCS HomeCare, the leading pro-vider of home care information, and DecisionHealth, publisher of home care’s most respected inde-pendent newsletter Home Health Line. The data used for this anal-ysis was compiled from publicly available information. The entire list of the 2010 HomeCare Elite agencies is available at www.oc-shomecare.com.

uated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as “Operation Warrior Forge,” at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash.

The 32 days of train-ing provide the best pos-sible professional train-ing and evaluation for all cadets in the aspects of military life, admin-istration and logistical support. Although con-tinued military training and leadership develop-ment is included in the curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evalu-ate each cadet’s officer potential as a leader by exercising the cadet’s intelligence, common

sense, ingenuity and physical stamina. The cadet command assess-es each cadet’s perfor-mance and progress in officer traits, quali-ties and professional-ism while attending the course.

Cadets in their junior and senior year of col-lege must complete the leadership development course. Upon success-ful completion of the course, the ROTC pro-gram, and graduation from college, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, National Guard, or Reserve.

The cadet is a stu-dent at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

He is the son of David T. and Mary K. Shipko of Westcliffe Court, Sylvania, OH.

Shipko graduated in 2007 from St. John’s Jesuit High School, Toledo, Ohio.

St. Ursula Academy claimed its second state title, winning the Division I cham-pionship 15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-18 over third-ranked Dublin Coffman Saturday at Wright State University’s Ervin. J. Nutter Center.

St. Ursula (28-1) also won it all in 2004, while Coffman (27-2) takes home the runner-up trophy for the second con-secutive year.

Coffman had a fast start, winning the first set by 10 points behind 20 kills and only two attack errors. But St. Ursula took control soon thereafter and won the pivotal third set, which included 13 ties or lead changes.

Four St. Ursula players had 10 or more kills, includ-ing junior Erin Williams with 15, senior Maggie Burnham with 12, sophomore Maddie Burnham with 10 and junior Cassidy Croci with 10. Senior Veronica Zimmerman collect-ed 37 assists and six aces.
