His t o r y o f t hank sg iving

Thanksgiving is a hol iday when fam i ly and fr iends com e together to eat and give thanks to the people or th ings they?re thank ful for. I t?s also a t im e to get com for table, r em in isce about old t im es, r elax, en joy the heat and watch T.V. Thanksgiving today is easier for us now than the f i r st Thanksgiving feast. For the f i r st feast, the people which were pi lgr im s didn?t have the resources and enjoym ents that we have today. Pi lgr im s had to wait a whole year for their crops to grow fu l ly, then they had to cook the food. They also didn?t have shel ter so, therefore, they didn?t have heat. M ost of the or iginal pi lgr im s died because of the coldness. So that?s why I th ink Thanksgiving is better today than the f i r st Thanksgiving.

I t?s know that pi lgr im s celebrated the ?fi r st Thanksgiving? in 1621 on Provincetown H arbor. In 1621, the 53 surviving pi lgr im s had their f i r st harvest. The feast lasted three days. There were or iginal ly 102 pi lgr im s, but due to the M ayflower Com pact that took place on Septem ber 16, 1620, the M ayflower voyage cost 45 pi lgr im s their l ives. M ost of the deaths were dur ing the winter fr om frost bi te. After a long 66 days on the M ayflower , the pi lgr im s f inal ly r eached what was known as the ?New W or ld.? Dur ing the t im e they reached the new wor ld i t was st i l l

win ter , so they were st i l l suffer ing and struggl ing to f ind resources to get around. There was also another tr ibe that joined the feast. The tr ibe consisted of 90 W am panoag Indians fr om a nearby vi l lage; i t also consisted of their leader M assasoi t .

Thanksgiving was celebrated each year after that. Thanksgiving then star ted to spread, and the governm ent star ted to pay m ore attent ion to the celebrat ion. In 1789 George W ashington declared a nat ional day for thanks and prayer. George W ashington declared that day to honor the U.S. const i tut ion. Today?s Thanksgiving that everybody know was proclaim ed an off icial federal hol iday by president Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Abraham refer red to th is hol iday as a day of ?Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwel leth in the H eavens.? Abraham didn?t just m ake Thanksgiving a nat ional hol iday so the whole nat ion could give thanks for i ts ?advantages and pr ivi leges.? Abraham had another r eason he wanted to f ind a way to br ing the nat ion together dur ing war or a ter r ible t im e.

Another way people celebrate Thanksgiving Day is by going to the parade in New York City (NYC). The nam e of the parade in NYC is ?M acy?s Thanksgiving Day Parade.? The idea of th is parade cam e about when European im m igrants wanted to celebrate their new Am er ican hol iday. This parade star ted in 1924 in Newark , New Jersey by Louis Bam berger at h is store (Bam berger?s). The parade star ted to spread to other stores and went m ore publ ic, so M acy?s decided to take on the parade in 1924. The parade was or iginal ly supposed to get people in the m ood for Chr istm as shopping. Before M acy?s had decided to take on the parade in 1924 they had their own Thanksgiving tr adi t ion. The tr adi t ion

was m ore of a H al loween them e. Chi ldren would dress up as vagabonds, pain t their faces and go around their neighborhood ask ing, ?anyth ing for Thanksgiving.? In today?s M acy?s parade in the l ineup they have f loats, Central Park Zoo anim als, and brass band clowns. There were also com edy acts.

Even though Thanksgiving took place years ago, we st i l l celebrate i t . Thanksgiving today is di fferent in m any ways than the f i r st Thanksgiving feast, but we st i l l have som e sim i lar i t ies. An exam ple of a di fference between today?s Thanksgiving and the f i r st is how long i t takes. Today Thanksgiving on ly lasts for a day, but the f i r st Thanksgiving took three days. A sim i lar th ing that they both have is that we eat and pray on the day of Thanksgiving. Other di fferences would be how the ?M acy?s Thanksgiving Day Parade? cam e about. At the end Thanksgiving is st i l l a day to give thanks and prayer to your love ones.

MemesM em es are som ething that is

r enowned to about al l of us. M em es can be found in di fferent languages. For exam ple, in M exico, two popular m em es are ones that consist wi th a m in ion and Kerm it the Frog. There are st i l l people who don 't what m em es are. A m em e is a a hum orous im age, video, piece of text, etc that is copied and shared on the In ternet. M em es can com e is any form of l i terature or context. In other words, they can be inappropr iate, r acial , stereotypical , dank , dead, etc. But their h istor y defines them di fferent ly and shows them di fferent than what we know so far of m em es of today. I t?s surpr ising that the term ?m em e? was f i r st used in Biology. I t was coined by evolut ionary biologist Richard Dawk ins in h is fam ous book , The Selfish Gene, focusing on cul tural ideas, behavior , and style. In th is book , Dawk ins talks about how m em es wi l l go on in the future and wi l l descr ibe the hum an society; but the m em es he is talk ing about is the one in Biology. In a way he is r ight, m em es are descr ibing the hum an society and is one of the m ost vi r al th ings in 2018. But that was just the word i t sel f but where does ?m em es? com e fr om or develop around what t im e. The m em e i t com es fr om the star t of the 1900s. You m ay now know the but there were m em es back than. But they were not in the form ant as we see them today. They did have the

picture and the caton with i t . But when you read i t 's hard to understand since i t 's the hum or that we are used to. But I bel ieve the evolut ion of the m em es were being changed through the events of the events of the t im e. Like you com pare the 60s to the 80s you see a di fference is cul ture. I bel ieve th is was the sam e th ing for the m em es through i ts evolut ion.

Dur ing W or ld W ar I I , kilroy was here was a sym bol for the Am er ican servicem an. Any place in the wor ld where a Am er ican servicem an went wi l l see th is sym bol . I t was found in r estroom s, on tr ucks, tanks, ships, and bom bed out wal ls. And alm ost any place i t could be painted, penned, scratched, or chalked. Even dur ing an invasion or batt le, som eone would leave the sym bol where those fol lowing would see i t . I t was a sym bol of courage, pr ide, encouragem ent, and very defin i tely a m orale booster. That is why i t was al l around the wor ld. This is a loving m em or ial em bracing al l who served dur ing W or ld W ar I I years fr om 1940 through 1945. This is an exam ple of one of the old m em es. I t 's even st i l l used today, but not in the way i t was used dur ing W W II, instead of kilroy was here they would put a di fferent nam e l ike ? juan was here?. An exam ple is when on the m ovie of the fair ly odd

parents were tr avel ing channel through channel . and when the evi l babysi t ter found out she did the sam ething.she stopped by spr ingfield in the show "The Sim psons". After she left the ci ty in disaster she left her nam e and then put after i t "was here". so th is can seen that even after W W II th is m em e was st i l l used.

To read a m em e the r ight way, you wi l l have to look at the words f i r st , then look at the picture that is being presented.

To understand a m em e you wi l l have to know the background stor y of the wr i t ten capt ion and the picture that is presented. To f ind the m em e funny to your r ight, you have to know the m eaning behind i t . The top par t of the picture is about God saying "let there be l ight" fr om the Bible. The bottom par t is about a m oth, and we al l know that m oths are attr acted to l ight. So i t wi l l be in terested what the father is saying, since he said "let there be l ight".

Pepe the Frog, Bad Luck Br ian, Grum py Cat, Alone, Over ly Attached Gir l fr iend - the in ternet in fu l l of m em es. So you wonder to yoursel f ?how do i m ake a m em e.? W el l that?s not hard to do. Al l you need to do in fol low these steps.

Step 1. Download an app or visi t a websi te

Step 2. Look for a picture that is tr ending or one you prefer

Step 3. Add the capt ion(the joke) to the picture that you bel ieve f i ts i t

Step 4. now share through the In ternet or on any social m edia that can be seen by people

f oo t bal l ho l iday

Footbal l is som ething m ost every fam i ly takes a par t in watching on Thanksgiving. M any fam i l ies watch i t on TV whi le cook ing, eat ing, or just hanging out wi th others. Som e people even spend the day attending the gam es with their loved ones. Footbal l has been a par t of Thanksgiving for m any decades, but how did footbal l becom e a Thanksgiving tr adi t ion?

The f i r st footbal l gam e that was played on Thanksgiving broadcasted via r adio over 94 stat ions across the United States on Novem ber 29, 1934. M any people tuned in to l isten to the com m entary about the m atch between the Detroi t Lions and the Chicago Bears George A. Richards, the owner of the Lions, set up a hol iday gam e as a way of drawing attent ion to h is own fr anchise, that was usual ly overshadowed by h is ownership of the Lions. The gam e concluded with a close score of 19-16 with the Bears tak ing the win. The broadcast was very successful and th is was the star t of a tr adi t ion that

would last for years to com e.

Even though the hol iday is about spending t im e with the fam i ly, that did not stop fans fr om enjoying the gam e on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the per fect m ark ing point for fans because i t is towards the end of the season, so each gam e gives the real ist ic vision of the playoffs. This r esul ts in plenty of fans to be exci ted to watch and l isten to the gam es. W hen the Detroi t Lions played the Chicago Bears in 1934, a lot of people attended the gam e, in fact the gam e was sold out wi th al l 26,000 seats f i l led in the stadium . People even waited outside and just l istened to the gam e, hoping to celebrate a victor y for their team . I t is said i f there had been m ore seat ing avai lable that an addi t ional 2500 t ickets would have been sold. W e can defin i tely say that th is gam e was a success.

The Dal las Cowboys and the Detroi t Lions play every year on Thanksgiving, not necessar i ly

against each other though. I t has becom e an annual tr adi t ion for the Lions to play on Thanksgiving since the gam e against the Bears in 1934. The Dal las Cowboys took a break fr om playing on tur key day for around 5 years between 1936-1941, but they are now playing every year on Thanksgiving. Detroi t and Dal las fans can always have a good gam e to look forward to whi le having som e del icious food.

To th is day a bunch of people watch footbal l wi th their fam i l ies and fr iends on Thanksgiving day. I t 's est im ated around 25.8 m i l l ion viewers watch footbal l on th is hol iday, which is qui te a large num ber. M any footbal l fans base their Thanksgivings around watching the gam es th is includes, m ak ing food before, after , or in between gam es, m ak ing footbal l them ed dishes and dr inks, and having enough seats for everyone to have a good view of the TV. Fans m ay also wear their lucky jer seys on the hol iday in hope for a Thanksgiving win. Footbal l has and st i l l does have a m ajor effect on how Am er icans

spend their Thanksgiving hol iday.
