  • Preface

I would like to have a preliminary discussion with an accreditationcompany to discuss implementing an environmental management systembut I dont know what it entails. I have no benchmarks against which togauge how long the process will take, what it involves, how much it willcost, and whether the information I am given is right for my company.

Listening to this and to the many other frustrated responses of businessprofessionals trying to understanding environmental management andhow it may benefit their company prompted me to write a practical guideto understanding and implementing environmental management systems.

This book aims to achieve two objectives. The first is to help you toachieve a comprehensive understanding of the concept of environmentalmanagement, enabling conversation with environmental mangers andaccreditation companies and enabling you to make informed decisions.Second, if you are the person implementing an environmental managementsystem, this book provides the methods, tools, procedures anddocumentation you need to detail clearly and explain the environmentalmanagement system you are putting into service.

The focus of this book has been on the implementation of ISO 14001.The reason for this is that, at present, ISO 14001 is seen as the leadingenvironmental standard in Europe, and over the next few years it will bethe efficiency standard by which ultimately all businesses will be measured.
