…they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. As it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”

Romans 9:32-33

1. Jesus trips people up.And it’s not just the Jews.

Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious.

Romans 11:11

…I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.

Romans 10:19

What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

2. Salvation isn’t by sincerity,we can be sincerely wrong.

For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.

You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

3. Romans leaves no room for a Jewish plan of salvation different from the Gentile one.

For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

4. Global humanitarianism is not a substitute for what Jesus did for us.

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Matthew 5:17-18

Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: “The man who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.) But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith that we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. Romans 10:5-9




4. Global humanitarianism is not a substitute for what Jesus did for us.

5. God has made it easy for Israel and us to accept the free gift.
