In Memoriam
PROFESSOR DAVID ROSENHANProfessor David Rosenhan, Z”L, was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the New Israel Fund and a long-time member of the San Francisco Regional Board. As a member of both the Law and Psychology faculties at Stanford, David was a major force in putting NIF on the map of the Peninsula Jewish community. In 1994, David and his wife Mollie bravely served as the first Guardian of Democracy Dinner Honorees. David was committed to the Jewish community, and to the liberal values that NIF stood for, especially the idea of a shared society in Israel. The NIF community will miss this courageous intellect.
MARILYN K. WEISBERGThe New Israel Fund mourns the loss of our dear friend Marilyn Weisberg, Z”L, a member of the Regional Board and part of the NIF family since our earliest days. Marilyn was a fierce devotee of social justice — locally, nationally and internationally. She truly tried to repair the world. Marilyn will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, intellect and community activism. She is survived by her husband, Ray, her children, Adam and Dvora, and her grandchildren, Micah, Noah, Sophia and Ariella.

THE NEW ISRAEL FuNDThe New Israel Fund (NIF) is the leading organization advancing democracy and equality for all Israelis. We believe that Israel can live up to its founders’ vision of a state that ensures complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants, without regard to religion, race, gender, or national identity. Widely credited with building Israel’s progressive civil society from scratch, we have provided over $250 million to more than 800 cutting-edge organizations since our inception. And we are more than a funder; NIF is at philanthropy’s cutting edge thanks in large part to SHATIL.
SHATILSHATIL is New Israel Fund’s Initiative for Social Change. SHATIL provides NIF grantees and other social change organizations with hands-on assistance, including training, resources, and workshops on various aspects of nonprofit management. Today, NIF/SHATIL is a leading advocate for democratic values, builds coalitions, empowers activists, and often takes the initiative in setting the public agenda.
About Us
Thousands of Israelis protest social inequalities and the high cost of living during the social justice protests that NIF helped support.

BANISH THE DARKNESS (BRIT HOSECH LEGARESH )Brit Hoshech Legaresh is a coalition of religious NIF grantee organizations building public support for pluralism and tolerance, and opposing religious racism as a distortion of Judaism. The coalition sponsors public events in response to “price-tag” and racist incidents, and advocates for legal consequences to racism and incitement. In October 2011, they led a solidarity visit to the village of Tuba Zangariya following the village’s mosque burning, and they are now responding to the outbreak of racist violence against the African refugee community.
Edith Coliver, Z”L, is remembered for her tremendous contribution to human and civil rights and for her leadership on NIF’s International and Regional Boards. Edith’s daughters, Susie and Sandy, established the fund to recognize their mother’s activism on behalf of a just and tolerant Israeli society.
Winner of the Miriam Fligelman Levy Cross Cultural Prize
THE GREEN NETWORK (RESHET YERuKA ) NIF works for a cohesive “Shared Society,” which builds bridges between Jews and Arabs in Israel and promotes co-operation on issues of joint interest and concern.
The Green Network is a well-regarded educational organization focused on environmental sustainability as a point of connection between the Jewish and Arab Communities. Today the Green Network can be found in over 300 schools throughout Israel and they’ve effectively placed sustainability issues on the Ministry of Environment’s agenda.
Miriam Fligelman Levy, Z”L, was an innovator and social thinker who, along with her husband Irving, dedicated her life to bridge building. Her legacy is carried on by her children Judith, Joseph, and John.

Chazan served on the NIF Board from 1992–93, resigned upon being elected to the Knesset for the Meretz party, and rejoined the NIF Board in January 2007. She is Professor Emerita of Political Science and African Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and currently serves as Head of the School of Government and Society at the Academic College of Tel-Aviv-Yaffo. She has spent her career giving heart and

He served for seventeen years as Executive Director of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties and for five years as President of the San Francisco Jewish Museum. He was Executive Vice President of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA), where he was instrumental in launching the second phase of Operation Exodus. In addition to serving as Vice President of the
NIF Board, Rabbi Lurie serves as the Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Inter-Agency Taskforce on Israeli Arab Issues. A longtime champion of democracy and equality in Israel, Rabbi Lurie has been instrumental in strengthening the ties between Israel and worldwide Jewry.
