Theme: Culture

This is a broad term and I have done this on purpose, I wanted to do this to be able to include a wide variety of materials to show the students that the countries have diverse cultures and that there are many things to learn from them. Latin America and Spain are beautiful places and the students can explore them while learning in the classroom, as some may not have the chance to travel there. It is my job to help show them what exists in the world and help them to become global citizens. This text set would be best with beginning level Spanish students.

With the target grade level being beginning Spanish students some of the activities are in Spanish and some are in English. In class we have learned the importance of providing many varieties of opportunities for students to grow in their literacy skills, this is the reason English and Spanish activities have been included.

Chocolate The Nature of Indulgence Lopez, R. (2002). Chocolate the nature of indulgence. New York, NY: Harry N. Abrams.

Recently while in a bookstore I found a book about chocolate, I picked it up and was surprised to find that it was about the production and history of chocolate. I knew I had to buy it because it talked about Mexico and the Ancient societies and how they used chocolate. The goal behind including this book was to present students with a way to learn about ancient civilizations while looking at something that many people like, chocolate. This book can help the students to explore the technology and skills that were present in Mexico as early as 1552.

Book: Who was Frida Kahlo? Fabiny, S. (2013). Who was Frida Kahlo? New York, NY: Grosset & Dunlap.

I am using this book because I remember reading this type of book when I was younger and they are a great learning tool without being boring. The book contains great illustrations that help to break up the text and gives students a chance to compare the images in their head to the book. While this book is intended for lower grade levels that may make it easier for some to read and may help if there are students in the class who struggle with reading. Depending on the grade level of the classroom this might be a nice book to read to them before beginning a mini lesson on Frida Kahlo or a lesson on Mexican art. Throughout the book there are sections that contain the Spanish word for an object and provide the English next to it. This would be a great to ask them what they think it means. The purpose behind including this book was that it is a text that is accessible to struggling readers and it is something that I can easily incorporate into the beginning of each class when we study about Frida or influential Mexican people.

Book: Focusing on the images of artwork located on pages 121-133. Frida & Diego Art, Love, Life Reef, C. (2014). Frida & Diego Art, Love, Life. New York, NY: Clarion Books.

Page 2: Text Set

I am also including another book that deals with Frieda Kahlo but this book I am using to show the artwork because there are great pictures in the book of her work as well as the work of her husband. The purpose of this is to have them look through the book and choose one of the pictures that they like the best and write about it in Spanish. The reason that this resource is included is to have the students look at the art images that can be found on pages 121-133 in the book. They would be given a chance to view the images and from there they would be asked to select and image that they like. This would then lead to an activity that would help them to use their sense of sight and describe what they see and why they like it.

Song(lyrics) + Video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkFJE8ZdeG8

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/calle13/latinoamrica.html

Calle 13 is a well known group and this songs highlights many important cultural issues. I would play this song for the students one time through and ask them what they think the song is about. Then the second time I would give them the lyrics to the song so they can follow along and after we would discuss the significance of the song. I would do it this way because I would want to see what preconceived notions they already have and if they are changed once they are more aware of the context. This video helps to show the diversity in Latin America, this is something that everyone might not be aware exists and it is important to expand their knowledge of the diversity. There is also a political aspect to the video that talks about how they cannot be bought, the land, the air, the colors cannot be bought. They are Latin America and they cannot be bought, by having this source it can help to explain some of the struggles that are faced in Latin America. By adding the lyrics it can help to increase the students listen comprehension and the level understanding of the song. Having the lyrics as a reference will help them to notice what words they may struggle with and this can be addressed.

Brain Pop is a great interactive website that features a section dedicated to Spanish materials. There are sections for different subjects like science and math, but in the section that is dedicated to Spanish learning there are amazing resources. This website would be great for the students to use to help them build their skills and knowledge. If they have access to computers at school using this website during testing time or near the end of the year as a review would be helpful. They can practice listening comprehension skills with the videos on the site and using the exercises for reading comprehension.

Website: 50 cosas por las que España is different/ Info-graphThis graphic contains 50 different facts and figures about Spain. By adding this graphic

the students will be able to learn interesting facts that they may not have learned before. The purpose of this was to provide this as a beginning activity to learning about Spain. The students will do a KWL chart to help see what they know and what they want to know. The chart can also help to show what they learned or in some cases what was not learned.

Food: Recipe http://www.tienda.com/recipes/churros.html

Spain GourmeTour magazine. La tienda the best of Spain. Retrieved from http://www.tienda.com/recipes/churros.html

Churros are a delicious food that many students may have already heard of but they may not know how easy they are to make. Churros are a common dessert in Spain they are enjoyed with a cup of chocolate to dip them in. I think that including recipes is important because food is an integral part of Latin American and Spanish culture. Food is shared with loved ones and meal times are a time to catch up. I would explain to them and demonstrate the importance of family along with food.

Food is an important part of any culture and one of the ways to under stand a culture is to look at things that cultures have in common. Food and sweets are big in the US so looking at the food in these cultures can be helpful to understand. As an extra credit opportunity the students could make the food to further understand the process. Food: Pronunciation http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primarylanguages/spanish/food_and_drink/

On the BBC website under the spanish topics sections a section on food and vocabulary can be found. If students are going to learn about food and drinks it would help them to be ably to hear how to pronounce the words. This can help them to see the importance of sounding out words that they may not be sure of. By hearing the words said in different ways while they are

learning it will help them to be more aware of the importance of the sounds of words and sounding out words.
