LEADING OFF...Texas Tech hosts its final home series of the season this weekend as 5th-ranked Texas comes to Lubbock for a two-game series that begins at 6 p.m. Friday at Rocky Johnson Field.

THE SERIESTexas has historically dominated the series, win-ning 10 of the last 11 meetings to lead 24-5 all-time. Tech’s last win over the Longhorns came on March 27, 2008 in a 5-4 victory in Lubbock. The win marked Tech’s first against Texas in Lubbock as the Red Raid-ers are 1-10 all-time in home games.

ON DECKThe Red Raiders return to the road next weekend, traveling to Lincoln, Neb. for the final time. The se-ries opener with Nebraska is set for April 30. Tech will take a week off for finals before closing the season at Texas A&M, May 13-14, in College Station.

NOT REALLY SENIOR DAYMany schools around the country will be honoring its senior class during the final home series of the season. Texas Tech will not be one of those schools, however, as the Red Raiders have no seniors on the roster, the only Big 12 school to hold the distinction.

GILLISPIE TO THROW OUT FIRST PITCHTexas Tech men’s basketball coach Billy Gillispie will throw out the first pitch prior to Friday’s game. The newly-named head coach will also sign autographs on the stadium concourse beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country. In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country.

FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). Turn back east (right) and Rocky Johnson Field will be on the right side.

RED RAIDERS IN THE BIG 12 RANKINGS

A LOOK AT TEXASTexas enters this weekend’s series with a Big 12-best 9-0 record in conference after a sweep of Iowa State last weekend. The Longhorns have won 24 of their last 25 games as well with the lone loss coming April 13 in a midweek game against Stephen F. Austin. Texas boasts the top pitching staff in the nation as the Longhorns, led by Blaire Luna, have recorded a 1.05 earned-run average. Luna is second in the league with a 0.88 ERA. The Texas bats have also impressed with a .339 batting average, which only trails Tech in the conference.

RED RAIDERS REMAIN IN TOP 30 OF RPIThe Red Raiders dropped two spots to No. 29 in this week’s ratings percentage index (RPI) rankings, a poll that is commonly used when discussing NCAA Regional berths. Tech is one of eight Big 12 schools ranked in the top 30 of the poll.

NON-CONFERENCE AND THE RPITexas Tech played five schools on its non-conference schedule that appear in the top 50 of the RPI. The Arizona State Kajikawa Tournament boasts three teams in that group as Cal is No. 12 nationally in the poll while Indiana is one spot below Tech at No. 30 and BYU is 40th overall. Jacksonville and Chattanoo-ga, two of Tech’s opponents from the USF The Game Tournament, are 49th and 50th in the poll as well. Tech went 5-0 in those games.

NATION’S BEST OFFENSE VS. NATION’S BEST ERAThis weekend’s series will pair the country’s top of-fense in Texas Tech against the nation’s top earned-run average in Texas. The Red Raiders have recorded a .363 average thus far, while the Longhorns are boasting a 1.05 ERA. The Red Raiders are also third in the country in scoring, averaging 8.03 runs per game.

TOUGH STRETCH TO CLOSE SEASONThe Red Raiders are in the midst of an eight-game streak against ranked opponents to close the sea-son. Tech will play six of those games on the road as well with the lone home series coming this weekend against 5th-ranked Texas.

SURPASSING LAST SEASONTexas Tech has already surpassed its win total from the 2010 season that ended with a berth to an NCAA regional. The Red Raiders finished 38-18 last year in the first season under head coach Shanon Hays. It marks the most wins for a Tech squad since 1997.

BLEDSOE ENJOYING LEADOFF SPOTIn five games since moving to the leadoff spot in the lineup, Emily Bledsoe is hitting .458 (11-for-24) with four doubles, a home run, four RBIs, and eight runs scored. Bledsoe finished 6-for-8 combined against Kansas with three of those hits resulting in doubles. Prior to moving to the top of the order, Bledsoe had mainly batted third or fifth.

MIDDLE OF THE ORDER SETS RBI STANDARDTech’s middle of the lineup consisting of Logan Hall, Sandy James and Cydney Allen are believed to be the first trio of players to all reach 50 RBIs in a single season. James leads the group with a Big 12 leading 56 RBIs, while Hall trails closely behind with 51 of her own. Allen joined the group against Kansas, driving in two runs, her 51st of the year.

KANSAS LOSS MARKS A FIRSTThe Red Raiders were previously 19-0 this season when leading after five innings before Kansas rallied with a seven-run sixth inning Wednesday to take the first game of a doubleheader, 9-5.

FIRST INNING SUCCESSThe Red Raiders are 27-3 when scoring in the first in-ning this season and 31-4 when scoring before their opponents. Tech is 8-4 this year when its opponent scores in the first inning.

JAMES TIES SINGLE-GAME RBI MARKSandy James almost single-handily defeated Iowa State in the series finale as the sophomore tied the Tech single-game record with eight RBIs in the game. James broke a 2-2 tie in the second with her second grand slam of the season before coming back to the plate later to deliver a two-run double and a two-run single to continue Tech’s offensive output.

OFFENSE COMES TO LIFE AT IOWA STATEThe Red Raiders broke the school mark for most runs in Big 12 play in both games against Iowa State, highlighted by a 16-5 victory in the series finale. It marked Tech’s most runs in league play since scoring 13 at Oklahoma State on May 5, 2007. Tech finished with 31 runs in the series, its most in a conference series all-time.

BASES LOADED SUCCESSThe Red Raiders are 34-for-68 this season with the bases loaded with six of those hits resulting in grand slams. Tech entered this season with only three grand slams in school history. Raven Richardson has appeared the most with the bags full, going 6-for-11, while Logan Hall is a perfect 5-for-5 in bases loaded situations.

PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCEThe Red Raiders have already broken the school record for single-season walks as Tech has drawn 170 thus far, breaking the previous high of 155 set in 1997. Sandy James leads the team with 29 base on balls taken so far, which marks the most for any Tech player since Elyssa Sigala took a school-record 40 in 2004.

PUTTING THE PRESSURE ONTexas Tech swiped six bags at Iowa State, including five in the series finale, matching the season high. Emily Bledsoe and Mikey Kenney both stole two bases each in the game. It marked the most bases stolen in a game since recording five on Feb. 19 against Utah Valley.

RED RAIDERS SECOND IN THE NATION IN WINSTexas Tech is currently second in the nation in total wins with 39 as No. 3 Alabama is the only squad, through games on Sunday, to reach the 40 win mark. The Crimson Tide is 41-5 on the year.

UNCOMMON ERRORS PLAGUE TECHPart of Tech’s struggles in its midweek series against Baylor stemmed from miscues in the field as the Red Raiders combined to post five errors. Tech entered the doubleheader without an error in each of its last five games and eight of the last nine games overall.

KENNEY MOVES TO FOURTH ON HOME RUN LISTMikey Kenney’s seventh inning home run in the se-ries opener against Baylor moved the sophomore into sole possession of fourth on the school’s career chart. Kenney now trails Jennifer Corkin (2005-08) by three homers for third place. Kim Martinez owns the school record with 27 home runs in the 1997 and 1999 seasons, followed by Paula Workman (1997-2000) with 23 career dingers.

HAYS MAKES CHANGES TO THE LINEUPPrior to the Oklahoma series, Mikey Kenney had led off every game for the Red Raider this season, but Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays made his first significant change of the year, inserting Logan Hall into the leadoff spot. The second-year Tech skipper made another change in the second game against Baylor, moving Emily Bledsoe to the top of the line-up. Since the change, Mikey Kenney has moved to the No. 3 hole primarily.

EFFICIENCY IS TECH’S NAME ON THE BASESThe Red Raiders are currently fourth in the Big 12 for stolen bases as Tech has swiped 64 bases to this point. The more impressive part, however, is that Tech has only been caught stealing six times, a stat

that is tied with Iowa State for fewest in the league. The Cyclones have been successful in 26 of 32 at-tempts this year, giving Tech a slight advantage in success percentage. Mikey Kenney is a perfect 14-14 this season to lead the Red Raiders.

GENTSCH, TONGATE SWINGING HOT BATSSince Big 12 play began, catchers Holley Gentsch and Randi Tongate have combined to go 12-for-37 (.324 avg.) at the plate as both players have seen ac-tion behind the plate. Gentsch added her first home run of the season last weekend at Iowa State.

BIG 12 BOASTS EIGHT RANKED SQUADSWith eight schools currently ranked in the top 25, the Big 12 might be the toughest conference in the country this season as No. 3 Texas (NFCA) leads the pack followed by No. 12 Nebraska, No. 14 Missouri, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 16 Baylor, No. 19 Oklahoma State, No. 22 Texas A&M, and No. 25 Texas Tech. The Big 12 has the most school ranked in the top 25 than any conference in the nation, leading both the SEC and Pac-10 who both have seven.

KENNEY LEADS BIG 12 IN DOUBLESAfter starting the year with nine doubles in Tech’s first 16 games, Mikey Kenney currently leads the Big 12 in the category as the sophomore outfielder has recorded 15 doubles on the season, two more than the conference’s next highest total. Kenney has also ranked as high as third in the nation for doubles.

SARTINI PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACHTexas Tech head coach promoted assistant coach Aly Sartini to the title of associate head coach on March 31. Sartini, in her second year at Tech, directs the Tech pitching staff and outfielders, while also as-sisting in the program’s recruiting efforts as well as academic and travel matters.

FANS PACK THE ROCKTexas Tech’s 1,248 fans in attendance during the se-ries finale against Missouri easily broke the school record of 853 set on March 28 last year against Iowa State. Three of the five largest crowds in school his-tory have come in Shanon Hays’ two-year tenure and fans are encouraged to once again pack Rocky John-son Field again this weekend against Oklahoma.

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKThrough only 48 games, the 2011 Texas Tech squad has already laid its mark in the school’s record book, setting the single-season records for runs, RBIs, home runs, and games ended via run rule. The Red Raiders have also had two no-hitters this season from freshmen Kermitria Ward and Brittany Talley, while several individuals such as Logan Hall, Cyd-ney Allen, and Sandy James have either broken or matched single-game records already in place.

RED RAIDERS FACE TOUGH PITCHING IN FLORIDAHeading into the USF The Game Tournament in Florida, one thing head coach Shanon Hays thought might benefit Tech down the road was the improved pitching the Red Raiders would see. Tech for the most part saw each school’s top pitcher, including Jacksonville’s Sarah Sigrest, who one-hit Big 12 foe Texas A&M the day before facing Tech.

PATIENCE HELPS TECH SET SCHOOL RECORDIn Tech’s first game in Clearwater, Fla., the Red Raid-ers took advantage of 18 Colorado State walks at the plate, shattering the school record of 11 that was previously set in 2007 against Oklahoma State.

WARD’S NO-HITTER TIES SCHOOL RECORDKermitria Ward tossed her first career no-hitter against Alcorn State on March 13, becoming just the fifth Tech pitcher to ever record the feat. Ward joins freshman teammate Brittany Talley in the no-hit club as the duo tied the school record set in 1999 for most no-hitters in a single season. The freshman was making her first collegiate start against the Braves after coming out of the bullpen for most of the year.

TECH KEEPS EARNING WEEKLY ACCOLADESSandy James became the third-consecutive Texas Tech player on March 15 to be named the Big 12 Player of the Week as the sophomore joined Logan Hall and Cydney Allen as weekly accolade honor-ees. Prior to this season, only four Tech players had earned Player of the Week honors. James hit .667 during the Masked Rider Invitational with six home runs to go along with 20 RBIs, pacing Tech to a dou-bleheader sweep of New Mexico and a 7-1 week.

DENNIS RELIABLE IN THE CIRCLEDuring Tech’s 25-game homestand, Kelsey Den-nis has found her groove in the circle. The junior allowed only eight earned runs in 40.2 innings of work, while posting a team-high four shutouts dur-ing that stretch, including three one-hitters.

ONE OF THE FINAL UNBEATENSWhen Texas Tech’s undefeated streak came to an end on March 11, the Red Raiders were one of only five teams still without a loss. Washington earned the title of the nation’s final undefeated squad be-fore eventually falling to Texas on March 17.

JAMES LEAVES HER MARK AGAINST LOBOSSandy James provided a huge lift to the Tech offense against New Mexico, belting two home runs in the doubleheader while adding eight RBIs. Her four RBIs in each game set a new season high as the sopho-more accounted for eight of Tech’s 14 total runs.

PITCHING STAFF SETS SCHOOL RECORDSThe Texas Tech pitching staff set several school re-cords during the Red Raider Classic, including most shutouts in a row (5), consecutive hitless innings (11.2), and consecutive shutout innings (27.1). Brit-tany Talley leads the Red Raiders in wins so far with eight on the year.

HALL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEKAfter hitting .583 during the Jeannine McHaney Me-morial Classic, junior infielder Logan Hall was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on March 1. In addi-tion to her 7-for-12 weekend at the plate, Hall added three home runs, two of which were grand slams, and 16 total RBIs to help keep Tech undefeated.

HALL BOOSTS MIDDLE OF THE ORDERTo say Logan Hall had a successful Texas Tech Invi-tational might be an understatement. The junior infielder hit .611 at the plate (11-for-18) with 11 RBIs, three of which came off a three-run home run against Utah Valley in the weekend finale. Hall leads Tech with 40 RBIs on the year and has recorded a .500 average, the highest on the team.

SPEAKING OF HALL...Logan Hall began the Texas Tech Invitational with a memorable performance against Utah Valley in the early game on Friday. The junior smashed two triples in the game, tying Denise Jackson for the school record that had not been matched since the 1997 season against New Mexico.

ALLEN MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUTAfter only one weekend in a Red Raider uniform, Cydney Allen proved why she was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation coming out of Salt Lake Community College. The junior catcher had a hit in each of Tech’s game at the Kaji-kawa Classic and had at least two hits in four of five games. Allen finished with a .556 average off a team-high 10 hits, including a two-run home run against Indiana as part of her five RBIs on the week.

FOX NOT ONLY FAMILY MEMBER IN TOP 25Texas Tech assistant coach Kristy Fox is not the only member of the Fox family ranked in the top 25. Fox’s younger sister, Kellie Fox, is the starting shortstop for 11th-ranked UCLA as only a freshman.

BLEDSOE DELIVERS TOP-FIVE MOMENTEmily Bledsoe has had many big hits in her Texas Tech career, but few may have been bigger than her two-run walkoff home run against Appalachian State that sent Tech to a 10-9 come-from-behind vic-tory. The junior described the hit as a “top five mo-ment” during the following week’s media session.

TALLEY TALLIES UP THE RESULTSFor being only a freshman, Brittany Talley had a lot of responsibility on her left arm in Arizona. The Lit-tle Elm, Texas native got the start against both No. 16 BYU and No. 12 Cal, picking up the win against the Golden Bears. Talley was an out away from a complete game win over BYU before the Cougars responded with a game-tying two-run home run. After going 5.1 innings against Cal, Talley returned to the circle later in the night to close the Indiana game, going the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRYWith all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average.

KERM PROVING TO BE SOLID RELIEVERFreshman Kermitria Ward proved to be a reliable arm out of the bullpen in Arizona, picking up the win against BYU before earning the save against Cal. The Texas 4A Player of the Year as a high school se-



nior, Ward recorded a 2.74 ERA in 7.2 innings during her collegiate debut.

HAYS CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAYTech’s wins over No. 12 Cal and Indiana was no or-dinary day at the park for head coach Shanon Hays. The second-year coach was celebrating his birthday and received a nice gift in Tech’s second victory over a ranked opponent of the weekend.

BYU GAME MARKS A FIRST FOR TECHPrior to last weekend, Texas Tech had never gone to extra innings in its season opener. The Red Raiders were an out away from ending the game in the sev-enth, but instead won, 7-5, in nine innings.

EARLY TEST SHOULD HELP LATEThe Red Raiders trip to Arizona should pay divi-dends when Big 12 play begins as Tech faced two of the top teams in the nation in BYU and Cal. The con-ference currently has eight schools ranked among the top 25 nationally.

ALLEN FACES FORMER SCHOOLJunior catcher Cydney Allen saw a few familiar faces in the opposite dugout during Tech’s season-open-er against BYU. Allen appeared in 11 games for the Cougars as a freshman in 2009 before transferring to Salt Lake Community College in 2010. She fin-ished 3-for-5 in the game, while also scoring a run.

HALL RETURNS TO HOME STATELogan Hall returned to her home state for the Kaji-kawa Classic. Hall, a native of Tucson, Ariz., played one season at Pima Community College before transferring to Tech for the 2010 season where she was an All-Big 12 second team selection.

EIGHT STARTERS RETURN FROM LAST YEARWith eight starters returning in the field from the 2010 squad that advanced to the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Red Raiders should have a wealth of experience to rely on when Big 12 play begins. Tech lost Leah Legler, Danielle Matthews, and pitcher Ashly Jacobs from last season’s 38-18 team.

NO SENIORS, NO PROBLEMThe Red Raiders will have one noticeable difference in their roster than every other school in the Big 12 - Tech has no seniors on its 2011 roster. Instead, second-year head coach Shanon Hays will rely on an experienced group of 11 juniors.

HAYS ADDS SIX NEWCOMERSEven with most of his roster from a year ago back, Tech head coach Shanon Hays added seven new-comers this spring, most notably junior college transfers Cydney Allen and Kelsey Dennis and fresh-man Kermitria Ward. Freshmen Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell along with sophomore transfer Sandy James will add to the list of newcomers.

FROM ACROSS THE NATIONNearly half of Texas Tech’s 21 players are originally from a state other than Texas as only 11 players hail from the Lone Star State. All together eight states are represented on this year’s roster, including Ala-bama Arizona, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Tex-as, Utah, and Washington.

ALL-BIG 12 TRIO RETURNSTech’s trio of All-Big 12 second team selections from a year ago in Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney all return to the diamond this spring. Bled-

soe and Hall will both be juniors, while Kenney will be entering only her sophomore season. The trio combined for 31 home runs and 122 RBI last season, giving Tech three reliable bats in the lineup.

RED RAIDERS TURN TO NEW ARMSFollowing the graduation of former standout pitch-er Ashly Jacobs, Tech will look at several new faces in the circle, including junior college transfer Kelsey Dennis and freshmen Brittany Talley and Kermitria Ward. Ashley Brokeshoulder and Karli Merlich both return to the circle as well, giving Tech five pitchers for the season. Ward will also split time as an out-fielder and will occasionally pinch run.

RYBA TO REDSHIRT 2011 SEASONDespite appearing on Tech’s roster, junior infielder Melissa Ryba will redshirt the 2011 season in order to comply with NCAA transfer rules. Ryba spent the past two seasons at Northern Colorado.

TECH SIGNS FIVE IN FALL PERIOD Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays announced the signing of five future student-athletes to national letters of intent this fall as Hannah Bell, Cara Custer, Chandler Moore, Adriana Perez and Katelyn Williams will all join the program for the 2012 season.



No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and immediately led the Red Raiders back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a pro-gram on the rise. The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raiders to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional. Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earned-run average since 2001 and the Tech defense committed its fewest errors in school history. Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement

under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a first-year head coach in program his-tory. Three Tech players - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season. Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008. The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure. Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 1999-2001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s). Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working under head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years. In addition to his time at the Division-I level, Hays has also made stops as the head coach at Frank Phil-lips College (1995-96), Abilene Christian (1996-99), and Midland College (2002-03), while also serving as the Abilene Christian athletics director from 2001-02. Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his fa-ther, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season. In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s broth-er and former Tech assistant baseball coach and director of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season. Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams. He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.
