The M/V KUDU, a vessel of Italian Line made her first call to the Port of Houston recently loadingthe major portion of her tonnage destined to Spanish and French Mediterranean ports as well asItalian ports. The vessel measures 507 ft. long by 72 ft. wide with a deadweight of 15,714 tons. Thevessel has cellular hatches with a container carrying capacity of 305 teu’s. With a cruising speed of18 knots, the KUDU offers 11 days transit time to the first Mediterranean port. Italian Line, theowners of the vessel teamed up with Costa Line last year to provide this joint service fromHouston to West Mediterranean Ports. Strachan Shipping Company is the Gulf agent. While inport. the captain of the KUDU was presented a color plaque of the Port of Houston to com-memorate the vessel’s maiden voyage. The M/V HELLENIC EXPLORER a vessel of Hellenic Lines Ltd., made her first call to the Port ofHouston recently, docking at the new Barbours Cut Terminal. The vessel is a multi-purpose ro/roand container ship that measures 624 feet long by 93.5 feet wide. The new ship is enteringHellenic’s service from Houston to the Ports of Jeddah. Dubai, Dammam and Kuwait. and will callBandar Shahpour on inducement. While in port a gala cocktai party was given by Hellenic’sHouston office and the captain of the ship was presented a color plaque of the port of Houston tocommemorate the occasion. Navigation Aid To Be InstalledThrough the efforts of Congressman Bob Eckhardt, a
sophisticated navigational safety aid will be installed at~ theentrance to Galveston Bay by the end of this year.
"I am delighted to announce that the Coast Guard hasnotified me that a Sea Watch racon buoy Will be installed byJanuary 1, thus providing additional protection for vesselsheaded for the Port of Houston," said CongressmanEckhardt, who represents the Houston Ship Channel area.
Mr. Eckhardt called the problem to the attention of theCoast Guard on June 1, and the notification of approval forthe installation was dated less than 45 days later.
