When thousands of clergy members from across the country gather at the Downtown Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas, TX for the annual Progressive National Baptist Convention, August 2-7, 2015, there will be a number of issues discussed and at the top of the list is voting rights.

Led by the fiery Rev. Dr. James C. Perkins, pastor of Greater Christ Baptist Church in Detroit, MI, the PNBC puts to rest any doubt that the Black Church is alive and well by addressing issues and effecting change.

Elected 20th President of the PNBC, in 2014, Rev. Perkins, says it is important that the members “jump in the arena of life an engage with some issue.”

“Baptists are coming to Dallas in August and voting rights sits at the top of the agenda,” he said, during a recent phone interview. “As we mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act, we have to realize that we are under attack, and praising and preaching is not enough. Citing the period when the Black Church was the focal point of communities across the country and pastors were highly revered and looked to as the fearless voices, no matter the issues, the reverend says that the same spirit of activism is needed today.

On June 4th, 2015, I was proud to join Congressman Tim Murphy (R-PA) as he introduced bipartisan mental health reform legislation, H.R. 2646, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. Rep. Murphy and I have worked together during the past two years to make meaningful changes to our mental health system to better

serve individuals with severe mental illness. At a time when newspaper headlines constantly alert us of tragic incidences that could have been avoided if treatment was accessible, our country needs comprehensive mental health reform. While the federal government spends approximately $130 billion each year on mental health, basic services are not available for patients in need of care. The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act contains several new and innovative provisions, but much of the legislation is based on existing programs that are successful in smaller models. For instance, the legislation would partially repeal the Institutions for Mental Disease (IMD) exclusion under Medicaid. The IMD exclusion is at fault for the chronic scarcity

of psychiatric beds across the nation. Several states have already witnessed success from demonstration projects that allow for an exception to this rule. Also included in the legislation is Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT), or court-ordered treatment for individuals who wish to remain in the community on the condition of compliance with their prescribed treatment. AOT, already present in a number of states, is proven to reduce the rates of imprisonment, homelessness and substance abuse by approximately 70 percent for participants. A new reform in the legislation is clarification of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which governs which information, can be provided to a patient’s family or caregivers. There are countless stories of patients ending

up in harmful situations when there is a lack of information flowing to parents and direct caregivers. The legislation would allow physicians to provide crucial information to immediate caregivers, after meeting certain criteria, regarding a patient’s mental health crisis. This legislation was built by two mental health providers in Congress who have seen our mentally ill population remain untreated in jails and prisons or on the street. The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act builds on feedback and critical analysis of the previous version of the bill while still investing in services that work and break down barriers to treatment. With countless supporters and more than 100 bipartisan cosponsors for the bill, Rep. Murphy and I look forward to advancing the legislation.

Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE?

Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmother-

or maybe YOU?

At an emergency board meeting resulting from the death of founder Joyce Ann Brown on June 13, 2015, MASS - Mothers (Fathers) for the Advancement of Social Systems named Koquice Spencer, as the temporary CEO/President. Ms. Brown, who was released from prison in 1989 after serving nine years, five months and 24 days in prison for a crime she didn’t commit, made good on a promise she made while incarcerated and founded MASS Inc. Since her release, Ms. Brown has been committed to freeing the wrongfully convicted, assisting and supporting the families of the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated, providing opportunities for those looking to reenter and become productive members of society, and ensure better conditions for those living in prisons. MASS Board members said they felt Ms. Spencer, who has worked side-by-side with her mother, was the ideal choice to take over the helm of MASS. They praised her commitment and leadership, while offering words of encouragement. Ms. Spencer, who will serve in the capacity of CEO/Preosdemtuntil the full board meets later this year and votes on a permanent successor, is excited about the opportunity to continue the work her mother was so passionate about. She expressed appreciation to the board for their vote of confidence and belief that MASS must continue. In the interim, the Board felt it was important to inform supporters, donors and volunteers that MASS Inc., which is a 501 C 3 non profit organization, did not die with Ms. Brown and is under the capable leadership of Ms. Spencer with assistance from Vice President of Programs Robert Spencer and Vice President of Marketing James Maynard. “I am so appreciative of the support that I continue to receive since my mother’s death,” said Ms. Spencer. “Of course this has been a tough time for my family and MASS, but we want everyone to know that the spirit of Joyce Ann Brown lives and her work will continue!” MASS Inc. has temporarily suspended services as plans are made to continue the great work that has helped so many enjoy a better quality of life. Ms. Spencer was 11 years old when her mother, Joyce Ann Brown was taken away to spend nine years, five months and 24 days in prison for a crime that she always said she didn’t commit. After a short trial that included testimony from a jailhouse informant, an obvious cover-up and an eyewitness account, Joyce was found guilty of robbery and murder. She was sentenced to spend at least 20 years in the Texas Department of Corrections before she could even have a hearing to discuss parole. With the help of Centurion Ministries, the CBS Newsmagazine Show 60 Minutes and several articles written by two Dallas Morning News reporters, Steve McGonigle and Steve Blow, Joyce’s case received international attention, and on November 3, 1989, she walked outside into the arms of her family, a free woman. Joyce’s incarceration period was a sad time for the family but one thing Joyce could count on was her mother’s

unrelenting support and she took solace in also knowing that her daughter would be fine living with MaDear. “While MaDear would exercise her firm brand of discipline, she would also shower her with the love and encouragement that had made me into a strong, confident woman,” wrote Joyce in her best-selling memoir, Joyce Ann Brown: Justice Denied. Ms. Brown was concerned, however, about what her daughter would think of her. Would Koquice be ashamed? Would she wonder if her mother was guilty? Would she hate her?

Ms. Brown learned quickly about the strength of a daughter’s love. Young Koquice never wavered and although she was rebellious at times, she remained loyal and supportive. Much like her mother, Koquice has always been a fighter. Loyal and committed, she stands for what is right. While her mom remained behind bars, she did receive visits from Koquice, During one of those visits, Joyce looked at her daughter from behind chicken wire as Koquice told her that despite the baby growing inside of her, she would finish high school with her class. “Mama, my baby is not a mistake,” Koquice said. “I need something of my own to love, and to love me. I wanted to get pregnant.” In February of 1986, when Koquice was in her junior year, Brittany Emia was born and the next year, Koquice graduated on time with the Hillcrest High School Class of 1987. After graduation, Koquice went to work to take care of her daughter. Today she has another daughter, Jereny, and two grandchildren, Jh’Mia and E’Myia. Since Joyce’s release, in addition to working in key positions in property management, political consulting, and marketing/sales; Koquice has worked side-by-side with her mother. On June 13, 2015, Koquice once again felt a deep loss, similar to the one she experienced in 1980. This time death would take Joyce away permanently as she never recovered from a massive heart attack. In a unanimous move by the Board of Directors, Koquice was named the CEO/President of MASS - Mother (Fathers) for the Advancement of Social Systems, the organization founded by Ms. Brown and committed to freeing the wrongfully convicted, assisting and supporting the families of the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated, providing opportunities for those looking to reenter and become productive members of society, and ensure better conditions for those living in prisons. Ms. Spencer promised her mom and the countless number of MASS supporters who have reached out, as well as those who have benefited from Joyce’s works, that she would remain committed to the noble work that her mother pledged her life to. Today Koquice Spencer stands as a symbol of hope, a voice for the voiceless, a Warrior, like her mother, Joyce Ann Brown.

Friday, July 31, 2015 is the exact day of last year that I spoke to DeMarcus Walton for the last time.

Admittedly before I met him I had developed a dislike for him, merely because he had impregnated my precious Alayna.

Now, I know she was 20 years old, but it didn’t matter. And then too, he was a bit older than her. Who was this so and so? And who should I slug first, him or her?

Well, she finally brought him around and when I first met him I was pleasantly surprised. Here was this Tupac-looking young man, who was extremely polite and a joy to be around.

We clicked immed-iately much to Alayna’s amazement and appa-rent discomfort.

Once little Aaliyah was born, I watched the doting father who made sure that his daughter’s experiences with her “first love” would be loving, nurturing and memorable.

Did he spoil her? Of course he did. And he should have. He wanted the best for her and he was the provider.

The last time I talked to him, I was attending a National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Boston. He told me his plans for his daughter for the weekend and he also had Alayna’s younger sister, Annya with him.

I encouraged him to take the girls to my house and spend the weekend. “I’ll be home on Sunday afternoon,” I told him.

I wish he had gone. When I hung up the phone I told my sister

girl friend Eva, “That is a fine young man. I just love him and what he is doing for my family.”

Little did I know that in less than 12 hours I would hear news that tore at my core.

The next morning Eva and I were going out to hang with fellow journalists and I got a phone call. I could hear my niece, Brittany, crying as she tried to tell me that DeMarcus was gone.

I think my heart stopped for a moment. This couldn’t be. Later that evening, at the NABJ awards program, another journalist, Amanda Fitzpatrick stood in the center of the ballroom

and held me as she prayed for my family. You see, it was just a little over a month ago

we said goodbye to my mother and I was not prepared for this news.

There hasn’t been a day since that fateful day that I haven’t thought about DeMarcus. I want to know why the young man, Justin Pharez Smith (no relation) felt the need to rob and kill DeMarcus and two other women, while also severely wounding another young woman.

I think about the many young girls who never got to know a father’s love and I smile

as I recall all the many times I saw DeMarcus wrapped around Aaliyah’s finger.

A little over two weeks before his death, DeMarcus took me and Aaliyah to lunch at Olive Garden.

We had a wonderful time and of course Aaliyah got a big chocolate dessert.

Before we left the restaurant, I said, “let me take this picture.”

That picture remains ingrained in my memory. It was also used on the cover of his obituary.

Thinking of DeMarcus causes me to think about my own father and how I had him for so many more years because he was in his late

70s when he transitioned. I was a “daddy’s girl,” just like Aaliyah and there’s no doubt in my mind that DeMarcus would have made it a priority to be at every eventful moment in Aaliyah’s life.

He was her knight in shining armor. He was not a deadbeat father. Instead he took his responsibility seriously.

It came as a surprise to me when his mother asked me to speak at his funeral. I thought so highly of him, I had no idea that the feeling was mutual.

Sure I knew that he made sure to put his best foot forward around me but to hear that he held me in such high esteem to his parents, well I was humbled.

As I looked at him for the last time, I noticed he was wearing the suit he purchased for my mother’s funeral.

I knew that had she been alive still, his death would have been a serious blow for her, as well.

These senseless mur-ders are so draining. It is so easy to feel helpless because we’re getting it from all sides. The 21-year-old young man who murdered DeMarcus will also not have an opportunity to be a doting father.

So many lives ruined. While some would ask for the death penalty, my stance on the subject does not change because someone near and dear is the victim.

I adamantly oppose the death penalty.

DeMarcus is gone and nothing any of us do will

bring him back.Maybe we can save others. It’s a fight

everyone can join. Sadly too many only care about the violence when they are directly impacted.

We have to increase the ranks of our armies to deal with assaults on and in our communities. We’re getting it from all sides and silence is not an option.

I am committed to ensuring that DeMarcus’ memory remains a part of Aaliyah and I hope that one day she will find a man to treat her as well as her father did.

I also hope that men of all ages will read this and recommit to their children.

As it pertains to the questionable queries as to what happened to Sandra Bland, one thing is quite clear. As a matter of facts and familiarity her death is “distinctively similar” to so many others that have taken center stage in America this year.

I have to admit that I heard Bishop TD Jakes turn that phrase; “distinctively similar.” Jakes explained as he used the term that it was an oxymoron.

Basically admitting that to parallel and juxtapose the meaning and inference of the words distinctive and similar on its face is a literary oddity. But for the sake of this conversation it’s pretty simple.

Although the information we have gathered around the death of Sandra Bland is distinctive, in the end it is similar to all the other police killings that have become the nation’s latest trend.

We could probably argue whether or not the decedent, one Sandra Bland could have been more forthcoming doing her arrest in Waller County Texas.

But the law and the constitution do not compel any of us to be docile, timid, or to allow our right to be subrogated by someone who wears a badge and carries a gun. There is the law and then there’s the LAW!!

Many of you old-school Negro thinkers say that Sandra Bland was too lippy or had an attitude. Some believe that she was

contumacious. Bland should have arrested her rights on the scene. Maybe Sandra Bland had been watching videos on Facebook.

Maybe she witnessed how great a number of White men in similar situations openly assaulted police officers and had nothing at all done to them. This latest episode of police malfeasance is distinctively similar to so many others. But one has to admit it has some twists.

First and foremost, the dash cam video of the original arrest by Texas State Trooper Brian Encinia has an obvious and glaring glitch in it. It appears to even novice been tampered with. Encinia threatened to “Light

up” Bland with a taser for not getting out of her car. A preliminary investigation found that Encinia violated both the traffic stop and courtesy protocol policies.

Trooper Encinia has only been on the job for one year and now an arrest he made is part and parcel of a homicide investigation. He has become infamous for all the wrong reasons. His name and his features appear to be Hispanic, which may be the only reason that Conservatives don’t have a defense fund established for him. Hmmm!

If that was not as bad as the “distinctive but similar” cases we have had before, all of a sudden Waller County discovered a new problem. After releasing the body of

Bland to her family in Chicago, Waller County realized that they botched the original autopsy and needed to take another one. Can you imagine how a family who has to face a funeral in three days also has to contend with this type of inept and inhumane insult?

The Christian Science Monitor, which is known and regarded for progressive thought and balanced, reporting, headlined a story that asked an interesting question. “Sandra Bland death: is Waller County the most racist county in Texas?”

My personal answer to their very honest question is also a question,” Who gives a damn? The larger and more important question is; “Is there anywhere in America were a Negroid, (male or female) can drive and not get killed by police? Can Blacks at least expect to be treated with the level of care and concern you would expect poor white folks to receive?

The death of Sandra Bland is “distinctively similar” to so many others. But in the case of Sandra Bland, it’s a lot more similar than it is distinctive!!

Dear Graduate,

I am writing this missive because it is important to pass along information that may help you avoid pitfalls including making choices that have unintended consequences.

Unfortunately, when I completed my bachelors degree at Cheyney University no one provided me with a roadmap or a detailed outline.

In retrospect, I would have benefited from insight from a college graduate offering advice on a variety of issues including the

importance of financial literacy, networking and long-term planning. Throughout my life I benefited from sound advice from individuals who cared enough to offer advice that helped me navigate life’s turbulent waters.

I’m not suggesting that everything in this letter will make your decisions easier, barriers disappear or make your triumphs sweeter.

My suggestions may or may not work and that’s ok. At least you have the opportunity to adopt, amend or create your own suggestions. Whatever you decide do not forget to give back to someone who could benefit from additional support or positive feedback.

Over the next few years you will encounter

obstacles that challenge your emotional, physical and spiritual well being. Life is full of twists and turns that are not always apparent.

However, your recent accomplishment exemplifies the best qualities shared by Marva Collins, Toni Morrison, Thurgood Marshall, Ella Baker and Janice Bryant Howroyd.

Similar to these great luminaries you are destined for greatness but have to grind to shatter glass ceilings.

Understand there are people who will underestimate you for various reasons but that should not deter you from reaching the top of the mountain.

On your march up the mountain remember to create foot holes so others can follow.

Below I identified a few suggestions that could be helpful, feel free to share with others.

Manage your student loan debt– Do not let student loan debt ruin your life by defaulting or ignoring those pesky phone calls.

You have options, if you can not find a job after graduating apply for a deferment. Usually the deferent process is simple so there is no need to ignore those loan payment coupons.

In addition, President Obama introduced the “Pay as You Earn” plan that will make the repayment process much easier.

Dear Alma,

I have been dating “David” forover eight months, but I havenever been to his house. Everytime I bring it up, he changes thesubject or comes up with a lameexcuse.

I’m not sure what to think. Hewill stay with me for weeks at atime, so I don’t think he’sinvolved with someone else.

I’m confused.

Hello, Confused,This situation occurs more oftenthan you might imagine. I’ve heard it pondered by countless co-workers and plenty of sisterfriends.

I’m not going to make this longand drawn out. Bottom line: Isuspect he doesn’t have a home. You guys are kickin’ it at yourhouse because…

No. 1: He might be married. I’msure you’ve wondered the samething. Or, he may be separatedand still living with the wife.

No. 2: He could be living withhis mom. Most men would hidethis temporary, oh-I’m-justpassing-thru situation.

No. 3: He could be homeless. It’s tough out there nowadays, with the economy the way it is.Maybe he’s stretching when itcomes to his living conditions – afew weeks at your house, afew weeks at another woman’shouse and a few weeks with hismom.

Trying to pull together a

security deposit and first month’srent ain’t easy. I find it moredisheartening that, after eightmonths, you haven’t said to himpoint-blank, “Take me to yourcrib.”

He’s definitely hidingsomething, but you aren’t beinghonest, either…with yourself. You haven’t made a fuss becauseyou really don’t want to know.Truth is easier to deal with whenwe deny it.

This is real simple. The nexttime he comes by, ask him. Butmake sure you’re ready for theanswer -Alma -

International Faith & Family

Film Festival Aug.20-22 at the Omni Dallas Hotel

The International Faith & Family Film Festival is a first-class gathering of high-level entertainment executives, notable Hollywood directors, screenwriters and actors that features exclusive movie screenings and events. It is a major component of MegaFest, a multi-day family festival featuring faith, empowerment and entertainment activities that was founded nine years ago by Bishop T.D. Jakes. Our inaugural film festival event in 2013 was a major success. This year’s MegaFest is expected to

host upwards of 100,000 people at the Dallas C o n v e n t i o n Center and A m e r i c a n A i r l i n e s Center.

The festival will include

10 featured films of different genres from countries around the world.

The festival will also include inspirational morning talks by Hill Harper, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.

There will be four in-depth panel discussions featuring seasoned industry pros: Faith-Based TV, Marketing in Faith, Diversity in Hollywood, and Faith in the Digital Space.

The event will also feature master classes by Devon Franklin and Keke Palmer

moderated by Kevin Frasier of OMG! Insider.

In addition, there will be smaller breakout sessions on directing, acting, producing, writing and film finance featuring top Hollywood players.

Tickets for the three-day event are $99 and entitle registrants to enjoy other events in the Megafest lineup.

Discount family and group packages are available.

The goal of the IFFFF is to entertain, inform, inspire and provide specialized topics of interest to aspiring filmmakers, actors and others who have an interest in the entertainment business.

In its 2013 debut, the International Faith and Family Film Festival set a new standard for discovering and showcasing the best of faith-and-

family movies that reflect a biblical worldview. The IFFFF also stands as a unique ecumenical

gathering that unites the various Christian film communities around a common cause of supporting and advancing Christian and family-friendly films and entertainment. The three major components of the F&F market – Protestant, Catholic and African American Christian – are all powerfully represented in this exciting integrated festival for the second time. There is a clear desire and support for high-quality Christian and family-friendly films and entertainment. An International Faith and Family Film Festival is needed to raise the bar and change perceptions about what constitutes a faith-based film.

10 AUGUST 4, 2015 W W W. T E X A S M E T R O N E W S . CO M

I have to say I’ve been feeling pretty lucky lately and, not necessarily from a financial, physical or even an emotional point of view.

When I look at my life from a worldly perspective now, it can sometimes still appear stacked against me. Life happens and well, you know the rest.

These days my spiritual resolve kicks in, if I’m fortunate, and I keep coming back to this one thing. It’s not about luck anymore.

I’m blessed because there are not enough hours in the day to say thank you to the Almighty for that simple transformation of thought.

I’m blessed because from where I sit and I could be wrong about this but, I don’t think I missed my wake up call from God. I confess. It was a long time coming but instead of pushing the snooze button, I got my behind out of bed and started paying attention to God’s agenda rather than my own.

Think about it. That’s a question anybody should ask of oneself. Have I missed God’s wake up call? All I can say is did you call the front desk and ask/pray for one? My bible is full of not yet saints and prophets who, when called, tried their very best to sleep through it, ignore it or pretend the call was for someone else. Most just denied it.

What about you? Remember in the bible God simply played past the “you talking to me?” He gave marching orders and that was it. Hello Moses. At times He

even lets you think you know more than He does. Say what Jonah? Even when you doubt what God is saying, He still, with appropriate consequences, rings your phone again. How ‘bout that Zechariah?

Imagine missing your wake up call from god and never getting another one. Like I said I’m feeling pretty blessed today. I would have loved to have seen the look on my mother’s face to hear me say I’m saved. The following conversations would have been the stuff dreams are made of. There are people who have been a part of your life who are or would roll over in their graves to hear that about you. Can you say Holy Ghost party?

I know this for a certainty because I believe I woke up on the last ring of my last wake up call. I could be wrong, but everything A.S. (after saved) is more optimistic for me. I find myself ridiculously giddy with the reality that God said, ‘ring him up one last time.’ It gives my every

waking moment and inevitable death new meaning. You know when you miss your wake up call, it has a tendency to ruin you whole day. I kinda think if you miss God’s wake up call, it has a tendency to ruin your whole life and the next one and the one after that. I’m sure there is someone reading this that knows the feeling of just getting in under the wire; either catching a plane, making an important meeting or beating the bill collector minutes before everything gets turned off. The negative anticipation is replaced with relieved enthusiasm because you made it in the nick of time.

Whew, thank God I made it. I may yet not get to heaven, but I can at least say I know the way. That’s worth shouting about. The bible counts it all joy. Life and death look a whole lot different to me now. Actually, they’re both the same to some extent. God is in both worlds. And it’s pretty nice to recognize and follow Him in this one. Have a nice day and may God bless and keep you always.

in among other things, the fight for human freedom and advocacy for human rights.

PNBC has a history of partnering with other institutions within the Black communities, he noted, citing Black Businesses and the Black Press.

“Historically black newspapers and black churches had an alliance,” he said, adding that working together the communities were stronger and information was shared.”

Unfortunately today, the media is not as positive and many can point to the negative impact seen in communities across the country as well as those images shared around the world. With the advent of such vehicles as reality television, he explained, too many negative images and unproductive lifestyles are on display.

“We are creating gospel stars not gospel prophets in this age of celebrity,” he said.

The focus must change and that’s why Rev. Perkins says he is so pleased that Dallas’ Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III of Friendship-West Baptist Church is the host pastor and will also be speaking at the press conference on August 6, 2015, the actual anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Known around the world for his dynamic delivery, spirit of activism and advocacy, as well as his commitment to social justice, Dr. Haynes is at the forefront of most discussions on human

and civil rights.“We’re proud to

have Dr. Haynes,” said Dr. Perkins. “He along with the rest of the marvelous lineup of preachers and classes makes for a very exciting and rewarding conference.”

Many of the sessions are open to the public and Dr. Perkins extended an invitation to everyone to check out the itinerary at www.pnbc.org and join him and the more than 5,000 registrants for a very enlightening, informative and uplifting experience.

During the interview, the discussion touched on the recent burnings of churches across America and the shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Make no mistake, he said, the burnings weren’t church burnings and the nine murders didn’t happen because they were in a church.

“Black people are under attack. Not Black churches, Black people,” said Rev. Perkins, as he challenged people to stand up for what is right. “We have to call it what it is and begin addressing it.

Known for calling things the way they are and never shying away from issues, Dr. Perkins, after graduating from Wiley College, he received his Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio (1990, Samuel DeWitt Proctor Fellow).

Dr. Perkins is the author of Building Up Zion’s Walls: Ministry for Empowering the African American Family and Playbook

for Christian Manhood: 12 Key Plays for Black Teen Boys.

His other writings, as well as profiles of his ministry and details of his community activism, have been included in both secular and Christian publications such as Black Enterprise, USA Today, Ebony, American Baptist, The African-American Pulpit, several edited works published by Judson Press, and the best-selling Success Runs in Our Race by George Fraser.

The Internationally renowned pastor has established numerous enterprises that support his vision of service, he founded the Fellowship Nonprofit Housing Corporation as a vehicle for community economic development.

Of note is his response to the crisis he

witnessed in the available educational options for young, urban African American males. Dr. Perkins instituted the Benjamin E. Mays Male Academy in 1993.

This K through sixth grade Christian school for boys operated for 17 years and positively impacted the future of hundreds of males.

Also in the spring of 2006, Providence Place, a $10 million development that provided 50 single-family homes for low-and middle-income families, was constructed.

A past President of the Michigan Progressive Baptist Convention and member of the Detroit Baptist Pastors Council, Detroit Chapter NAACP, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Board of Trustees of Wiley College, Marshall, TX, Board of Trustees of Morehouse School of Religion, Dr. Perkins serves as a board member of the National Council of Churches.

A recipient of numerous awards, he is married to Linda Adkins Perkins and is the father of two daughters and the grandfather of one grandson.

As he anxiously prepares for Dallas, Rev. Perkins continued to emphasize the message he will be sharing all week long.

Voter education, recruitment and participation are key, Rev. Perkins said, “Voting is behind it all. If you don’t vote, you get left out. If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu!”

(Washington, D.C.). The 54th Annual Session of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. (PNBC) will convene the week of August 2-7, 2015 at the Dallas Hyatt Regency Hotel, 300 Reunion Blvd. in Dallas, TX. The denomination will focus on restoring voter’s rights and will hold a press conference on August 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency, Room Shawnee Trail #362. PNBC will announce their support of the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2015 and kick- off a

nationwide voter registration campaign. Joining PNBC will be civil rights advocates Martin Luther King, III, Ambassador Andrew Young, Rev. Dr. James Forbes, Bill Wachtel, and Andrew Wilkes; all from the Drum Major Institute, a human rights organization founded in 1961 by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and Harry Wachtel, Dr. King’s advisor. August 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which in

recent years has been weakened by the Supreme Court. PNBC, along with national leaders from various advocacy organizations including Faith in Public Life along with members of Congress, will utilize the press conference to call on all lawmakers to support the Voting Rights Advancement Act. The bill seeks to restore the damage done by the Supreme Court ruling in 2013. In addition to supporting the Voting Rights Advancement Act, PNBC will begin a widespread voter registration campaign. Dr.

James C. Perkins, PNBC President, said, “The Annual Session will be the beginning of efforts to restore the voting rights that were eviscerated by the Shelby County vs. Holder Supreme Court ruling. PNBC is galvanizing member churches all across the country to work to end voter intimidation, voting suppression, and suspicious practices. In addition, we are embarking upon a nationwide voter registration campaign with a special focus on communities that have been hit the hardest by voting discrimination.”

Over 5,000 delegates representing over 2,000 churches and an estimated membership of 1.5 million people in the United States will attend the Annual Session. PNBC is also issuing a challenge to all presidential candidates tospeak to issues of voter suppression. PNBC recently commended Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton on her call for automatic voter registration and urges all candidates to follow suit by addressing voting rights during the debates.

(Corpus Christi, TX) Texas State Association of Fire Fighters honors Garland Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local #1293 member and Garland Fire Department’s Jerry G. Click with their prestigious Paul Kelly Humanitarian Award. Garland Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local #1293 member Jerry Click will be honored July 29, 2015 at the Texas State Association of Fire Fighter’s 44th Biennial Convention for his selfless and humanitarian efforts, which exemplify fire fighters heart, dedication, and service to his fellow man. At each TSAFF Biennial Convention, a TSAFF member is recognized who has contributed in a special way to their Local, which positively affects the Texas State Association of Fire Fighters and further

promotes the good of the International Association of Fire Fighters. The Paul Kelly Humanitarian Award singles out an individual who, through their commitment and dedication, has promoted a positive example and human welfare in what they do on and off duty. The presentation consists of a specially designed ring to wear proudly and acertificate recognizing their

accomplishments. David Riggs, President of the Garland Fire Fighters Association said, “Jerry is someone I can depend on when we have a fund raising activity for a charity. Jerry will always ask “What do you need me to do?” Every association needs a Jerry G. Click in their local. I’m truly blessed to have him in I.A.F.F. Local 1293.” The Texas State Association of Fire Fighters was established in 1938 and it is Texas’s only professional, career fire fighters organization, representing over 15,000 fire fighter members and 172 affiliate locals. The Texas State Association of Fire Fighters is affiliated with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF).

Texas State Association of Fire Fighters presents Paul Kelly Humanitarian Awardindividuals with limited family support, debt

and a new job.

Remember to say “thank you”– Over the next few months there are people you should take time to acknowledge including family, professors, administrators, members of the janitorial and auxiliary staff, rivals (they made you work harder), friends, library staff etc.

Perhaps a professor gave you extra time to complete an assignment after a tragic event or a member of the auxiliary staff reminded you of a deadline. Do not forget that friendly member of the janitorial staff that told you to stay positive at a low point.

Networking and the art of the interview– Take time to sign up for university or locally sponsored job fairs. Utilize relationships with classmates, fraternities and sororities, professors and mentors from internships and externships. Attend mixers prior to and after graduation if you plan to move to a new state or country.

Make sure you have business cards with updated contact information. Look the part. When you interview or meet a prospective contact its important that your attire is consistent with the company culture.

Don’t be discouraged– The job market is shaped by your experience, location, market trends and contacts. Finding a job (or being an entrepreneur) is not easy. Stay positive and continue to reach out to old friends.

Be bold– Experience has taught me that

taking a chance including moving outside the United States or choosing a job outside of your major is worth the risk. You may not always succeed but it’s better than regret.

Focus on finishing strong– An anticipated graduation date and graduating are not the same. Work hard and don’t allow distractions to ruin your plans.

Plan accordingly– Develop a list of realistic short and long term goals.

Don’t be bitter– If something prevents you from graduating don’t despair. Focus on taking classes during the summer, fall or spring. Make sure family and friends understand that you may not graduate.

Give back to your alma mater– Financially support your alma mater. Join the local alumni affiliate and sponsor a student in need.

Reflect and exhale– Review all departmental, college policies and procedures to ensure you graduate on time. Send out graduation invitations and relax.

After graduation feel free to stay in contact via Twitter: @LarryJWalker2 or Facebook: Larry J Walker. Don’t be afraid to defy conventional thinking. I look forward to hearing from you. Warm Regards,

Larry

Bayou Classic Signs Extension with NBC Sports Group; New Kickoff Time for Annual Football Contest

The Bayou Classic team announced that the 42nd Annual Bayou Classic will once again be broadcast on NBC, but this year will move to the broadcast company's cable network – NBC Sports Network. The agreement between The Bayou Classic and NBC Sports Group extends the broadcast of the Bayou Classic on NBC Sports Network for another year. NBC Sports Group has been the home of The Bayou Classic since 1991. "The landscape of television sports is changing and it is important to us that the Bayou Classic continue to be an integral part of that landscape," said Dottie Belletto, President of New Orleans Convention Company, Inc. (NOCCI), the management firm of the 42nd Annual Bayou Classic. "Coming off one of Bayou Classic's best and most dramatic seasons in decades, we could not be more proud to extend this historic partnership and are excited that this extension offers enhanced opportunities that allow us to bring Bayou Classic to fans on more platforms than ever before." Also new for 2015, the kickoff time for the Annual Bayou Classic has been moved from its traditional 1:30 pm CST to a new kickoff time of 4:00 pm CST. This is also a change from earlier dissemination of a 2:00 pm CST kickoff. "This later kickoff time makes this the first time the Bayou Classic will see a prime-time matchup both in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and on broadcast," added Belletto. "While our relationship with NBC Sports is longstanding, this new relationship opens up additional avenues to expand the breadth of Bayou Classic-related sports programming both in the game broadcast and in advance promotions and marketing efforts."
