TLBAA BREED ADVISORY COMMITTEE

6 Texas Longhorn Trails

The TLBAA World Show was held June 10-14 in the Fort Worth Stockyards Coliseum. Weattracted a number of non-Longhorn visitors and had a chance to showcase our animals and theTLBAA.While there were unforeseen glitches, the participants seemed to enjoy the opportunity to

visit the Stockyards area. The entire office staff, the show committee lead by Traci and TriggMoore and many TLBAA volunteers did an outstanding job dealing with the change in venue and putting on a successful show. The Show Committee and staff are already working on an evaluation of the show and improvements for next year. The Com-

mittee is soliciting input from participants to help in planning for next year. If you participated and have any constructive ideas, please forward them to [email protected] and [email protected]. Board of Directors member, Dora Thompson, led a strong, successful campaign that resulted in a substantial increase in

sponsorships over last year. We appreciate Dora’s hard work and the generosity of those who sponsored! We have hired a Financial Manager, Donna Shimanek, who began work on June 24th. Donna comes to us with a strong

bookkeeping/accounting background and has a BBA from the University of Alaska. Donna is hard at work cleaning up ourbooks so that we can have accurate, factual, and meaningful financial statements.A search committee has been formed to find a General Manager/Executive Director for the TLBAA. The committee, led by

Joel Lemley, has begun the search process following the Board approved procedures. Two new Board Members have been elected by the TLBAA Board of Directors to fill the positions vacated by Brent Bolen

and Dale Hunt. Craig Perez has been elected to serve as Division C Region 15 Director. John Parmley has been elected to serveas Division B at-Large Director. The Building Committee, chaired by John Parmley, is working on preliminary floor plans. The Building Program will be

discussed in a future letter. An e-mail address ([email protected]) has been set up for the Chairman of the Board so all correspondence with the

Chairman will remain in the archives of the TLBAA. I am in the process of forwarding pertinent TLBAA e-mails from my per-sonal e-mail address to this accountMay God bless you, the TLBAA and the USA.

onghorn owners can look at their cattle and see the current culmination of a chainof events epitomized in their Longhorn cat-tle. Cattle that came to the New World from

Spain and a boy born in France in 1838 are vital ingredients inthe historic backtrail of the Longhorns in today’s pastures. That boy, Charles Armand Schreiner, was the fourth of five

children born to Dr. Gustave Adolph and Charlotte Schreiner inthe Alsace-Lorraine area of France. The family moved to San An-tonio, Texas in 1852, where the father died shortly afterward and14-year-old Charles worked to help his family get by. At age 16he joined the Texas Rangers so that he could “earn a man’swages.” In his new job, he got to see a lot of territory and wasparticularly impressed with the land along the Guadalupe Riverin what would become Kerr County. When his mother died twoand a half years later, he resigned from the Rangers and got intothe cattle business. In 1858, with his brother-in-law Casper Real, he bought a

small store at Camp Verde where they contracted to supply beefand supplies to the military post fifteen miles south of Kerrville. While making frequent trips to San Antonio for supplies, Charlesmet Mary Magdalena Enderle, who became his bride in 1861, theyear he joined the Confederacy. When he returned following the Civil War, his ranch and live-

stock were in shambles. He and his family endured two years ofpoverty and hardships and were forced to leave the ranch, mov-

ing to the struggling county seat of Kerrville. With the financialaid of August Faltin in 1869, he again opened a mercantile busi-ness and, benefitting from Texas’ recovery from the post-war re-cession, he was able to buy Faltin’s interest in 1879. TheLonghorn cattle driven north to feed a beef-hungry appetiteproved a bonanza that lifted the Texas economy while other ex-Confederate states struggled in the Reconstruction era. According to The Handbook of Texas Online, the continued

Indian menace in the Kerrville area caused a home guard unit tobe organized in 1875, and Schreiner was elected captain, a titlehe carried the rest of his life. He also served as both county anddistrict clerk, and from 1868 to 1898 he served as county treas-urer. The banking business which he conducted as a departmentin his store, the Charles Schreiner Company, grew so large that in1893 he opened a separate banking facility which also bore hisname. At first, Schreiner benefitted from the trail drive era mainly

from the gold brought back to Texas by cowboys and cattlemen, and although there is no record that he went “up the trail” him-self, it is said that over the years the captain and various partnerssent more than 300,000 Longhorns up the Western Trail toDodge City and laid the foundation for his empire. In addition to his mercantile, civic and livestock activities,

Captain Schreiner also held many banking and railroad posi-tions. His philanthropic contributions include what is nowSchreiner College.

Do history-makers make history, or do the events of history reveal the history-makers?

Are certain families destined to be in the mix of historic events, or do those events occur

because those families, those individuals brought them about? The right person at the right

time with the right plan is epitomized by the Schreiner family’s multi-generational in-

volvement with Texas Longhorn cattle. This progression of creative involvement will be on

display at the September 15 auction at the historic Y.O. Ranch near Mountain Home, Texas.

Among his extensive land purchases, which eventually totaledmore than 550,000 acres, was the present-day Y.O. Ranch, a79,000-acre property 40 miles northwest of Kerrville. The ranchwas given its name in 1880 when the captain bought the Taylor-Clements ranch, the 16,000 head of YO-branded cattle on it andthe brand itself. Subsequent sales and land-swaps have reducedthe ranch to a more compact and manageable 40,000 acres. Thewhite limestone hills of the Y.O. sit atop the Edwards Plateau, spotted with live oak, mesquite and juniper, prickly-pear cactusand yucca. In his 79th year, anticipating enactment of federal inheritance

laws, Captain Schreiner divided his holdings equally among hiseight children. His youngest son, Walter R. Schreiner, became theowner of the Y.O. Ranch. World War I was in progress, and any-one in the ranching or farming business profited handsomely, but when the war ended, so did the booming economy. The Y.O. has experienced several periods of tough times when

periodic dry spells hit the area. Not being blessed with the “min-eral supplement” of petroleum deposits which benefitted manyother Texas ranches, the Y.O. has survived and prospered due tothe creativity and management skills of the generations of own-ers. Walter set that standard, doing what he could to make theranch productive, and even though agriculture in the USA duringthe 1920s was a struggle, he stocked the ranch with Hereford cat-tle, Angora Goats and Delaine sheep. One of the most conse-quential decisions Walter made was his 1922 marriage to MyrtleBarton, whose strength, courage and leadership would sadly be-come necessary. Walter died in 1933, leaving the Y.O. to Myrtleand his only son, Charles Schreiner III (Charlie III) who was sixyears old. In her history of the ranch, Imprints on the Hills, LorieA Woodward explains that Walter had an older brother namedCharles Jr., whose only child was a daughter. To honor his fa-ther’s memory, Walter named his son Charles III. Walter’s death at the height of the Great Depression obliged

Myrtle to take charge of the Y.O. She knew nothing about runninga ranch, but she knew to ask advice of her brothers-in-law, Gus andLouie Schreiner. They lent expertise but never tried to run the ranchfor her; when they advised what the price of cattle should be, shewouldn’t budge from that price to deal with prospective buyers. Shenot only kept the ranch afloat, but invented a new income streamin 1943 by leasing the ranch for hunting. That practice has sincebeen adopted by almost every ranch in Texas.Charlie III was growing up and learning ranch responsibilities

at his mother’s side during the Great Depression, World War IIand into the early 1950s. The seven-year drought of the 1950sforced Charlie III to ship his cattle (he was now running Angus)and move his family to greener pastures in Montana. After four

years, the rains came and Charlie III, his family and his cattle re-turned to the Y.O. to stay.Realizing the need for cattle to handle the tough times, and

aware of the role Texas Longhorns had played in the develop-ment of the west and the founding of the Y.O., in 1957 CharlieIII began attending the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge auc-tions of surplus Longhorns. This herd had been founded in response to the threat of the

near extinction of the Texas Longhorn. The U.S. Congress had au-thorized funds to gather a representative herd which was shippedto the Wildlife Refuge in 1927. As the herd grew, managementpractices included the reduction in numbers afforded by the auc-tion. Held annually beginning in 1943 at the refuge near Law-ton, Oklahoma, the event attracted Longhorn enthusiasts to swaptales, party and buy a few Longhorns.Beginning with five heifers and a bull from the Wildlife

Refuge and private treaty purchases of Peeler and Yates cattle, theY.O. eventually built the largest herd of quality Texas Longhornsin the nation.Along with other like-minded enthusiasts, Charlie III began

pushing for an organization to represent and protect the inter-ests of Longhorn owners and their cattle. The first membershipmeeting of the new Texas Longhorn Breeders Association ofAmerica (TLBAA) was held in September 1964 at Lawton Okla-homa in conjunction with the refuge sale. Appropriately, CharlieSchreiner III was elected the first president, an office he held threeyears. In 1974, ten years after the formation of the TLBAA, the Y.O.

conducted its first Texas Longhorn auction, managed by AlanSparger.“My dad and Charlie III were close friends,” said Alan, “and

they both collected Western Memorabilia. Because of my dad’sinterest in the Old West, he got interested in Texas Longhorns, which he got from Charlie. I guess that’s what started my inter-est and involvement in the Texas Longhorn business. Every timeI saw Charlie, I’d say ‘We’ve got to have a sale! We’ve got to havea sale!’ He put me off as long as he could, then one day he said,‘We’re going to have a sale, and you’re going to be in charge of it.’Of course, I didn’t know any more about that than I did flying anairplane, but we put that first sale together, and it was a very in-teresting cast of characters…and it was a very successful sale.”Graves Peeler and Walter Scott were among the foundational

consignors, and Charlie’s friend Eddie Wood was the auctioneer.“I guess,” said Alan, “that’s how Eddie got into doing Longhornsales on a regular basis.”“I’m not involved in this sale, but I encouraged them to do it

and I will be there to support them. I look forward to going up

there and have a good time. The Y.O. is a wonderful place to go;there’s a lot of ambience there, it’s a big working ranch and thereis so much history of the Longhorn breed.”

Charlie III was not content to be just an officer in the newlyminted TLBAA – his creative mind and enthusiastic persona werebrought to bear in making the general public aware of TexasLonghorns. In 1966, he organized a cattle drive from San Anto-nio to Dodge City, following the trail that his grandfather’s manyherds had followed. Staged “Indian” attacks and wild parties attrail’s end are part of the lore the lucky par-ticipants recalled years and years after theevent. It was a huge success, but he said hewould never do it again. When the Bicen-tennial folks came calling, however, hestaged a drive from the Y.O. to the NationalRanching Heritage Center in Lubbock,Texas.

Charlie III’s creative thinking went wellbeyond cattle drives and Longhorns, how-ever. The San Antonio Zoo had a successfulprogram breeding exotic deer and antelopeand Charlie agreed to turn some of their sur-plus animals loose on the Y.O. to see how they adapted. The ex-periment worked well – and also proved that higher fences wereneeded. This began the Y.O. start in the exotic wildlife businessthat now includes more than 60 species, many available for hunt-ing.

As hunting became more of a profit center, Charlie III and hisfour sons, Charlie IV, Walter, Gus and Louis expanded theirthinking to include daily tours, horseback riding, photo safaris, the Y.O. Adventure Camp for children, overnight stays and cor-porate retreats. Semi-annual Exotic Game auctions feature offer-ings from the Y.O. breeding program as well as consignmentsfrom the industry’s top breeders of species such as Axis, Black-buck, Sika, Fallow, Mouflon, Waterbuck, Impala, Bison, Zebra,Gazelle and many others.

The year 2001 was a bad one at the Y.O. as the family experi-enced the untimely death of managing partner Louie Schreiner, followed shortly by the death of his father, Charlie Schreiner III.Returning to the Y.O. from his ranch brokerage and restaurant(Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse in Dallas) businesses, with his beautifulblond wife, Mary Helen, Charlie IV returned as managing partnerand placed renewed emphasis on the Texas Longhorn program.

With a solid foundation of Y.O. cows, many with Whirlwindinfluence and bloodlines tracing to the legendary Y.O. Sam Hous-ton (TLBAA Certificate #1) and Bold Ruler, the addition of newand popular genetics makes the storied Y.O. program even moreappealing. Coach, Sittin Bull, Max Caliber and Golden Rule haveall added quality to the herd, as has their home-bred herd sire,Air Force One by Coach.

“Our cows have a unique genetic makeup,” said managingpartner Charlie IV, “and they are famous for their bright and un-usual color patterns. We have kept a base of foundation Y.O. cowsthat work real well with our high-profile bulls. We are pleasedwith the exceptional color and uniformity of their calves.”

“My dad didn’t get Longhorns back on the ranch until the1950s,” Charlie IV continued. “After we got back from thedrought he got interested – it was interesting, it was historical, itwas a project to do. They turned out to be really hardy, a perfectmatch for the Y.O. and him.”

His dad also loved to experiment with cross-breeding and, inaddition to the Texas Longhorns, had 20 different programs goingwhen Charlie IV got out of Texas Christian University in 1975.

“We were crossing right and left,” the younger Charles con-tinued. “Brown Swiss, Chianina . I’ll tell you what – a three-year-old half Chianina, half Longhorn steer is a big, tall, half-bloodedson of a buck! You go up to one on horseback and they couldlook you in the eye, just about. Anyway, when I got here weshipped them all. We went straight Longhorn and that workedreal well for us.”

Lemley Auction Service will be handling the auction, andJoel Lemley points out that since 1880, the Y.O. Ranch has been

linked with Texas heritage and Texas tradi-tions, none of which is more historic thanthe Texas Longhorn.

“We’ve scheduled the sale for September15,” said Lemley. “This sale is being put onby Charlie Schreiner IV and the entireSchreiner family. We plan on making this anannual event, and want to get into the rota-tion of being one of the premiere sales. Thefocus will be on the cattle and the auction, but as we get this one behind us, we look for-ward to next year and adding more of the ac-tivities the ranch has to offer. The ranch is

beautiful this year; they’ve had a lot of rain and the grass reallylooks good. They are inviting the people to see the ranch the wayit is, with all the exotic animals and some of the buildings thatare over a hundred years old.”

“The ranch has some excellent animals they will be selling, and they are also inviting a lot of consignors to be a part of thissale”

Alan Sparger points out that the registered herd is kept on thepart of the ranch they call the Live Oak Ranch, which is a beau-tiful, basically grass-covered part of the ranch; it is not as ruggedand cedar-covered as other parts of the ranch where the com-mercial herd roams.

“They have an extensive AI program,” said Sparger, “they usesome of the top bulls in the breed. They try to improve their herdand at the same time try to preserve some of the things the Y.O.cattle are known for. The color is something when you see theY.O. cattle – it’s just amazing, the beautiful color patterns, tri-col-ors, and the things you see there that you don’t often see in otherherds.”

“I’m looking forward to this. They have a great facility and I’dlove for them to have an annual sale. It would be well-receivedand people would want to do it every year, to sell cattle and so-cialize. My hat’s off to Joel Lemley and Charlie IV for doing thesale. People who don’t know the Y.O., they can go one time andthey will go again, because it is a blast!”

“This family,” says Joel Lemley, “is pretty much responsiblefor there being a registry of Longhorns, and I wantthem to have that accolade; Iwant them to havethat attached to theirresume. I think theydeserve it!”

Texas Longhorn cat-tle are a historic cer-tainty, developed bycenturies of survival. That history remains. Buttheir current place in his-tory would be far differentwithout the history-mak-ers of the Schreiner family.

Y.O. Sam Houston, TLBAA Certidicate #1, is a part of the rich ge-

netic history of the YO breeding program.

TLBT Member Speaks To Longhorn DroversWith Fort Worth Herd

Submitted by Kevin RookerDuring the 25th Annual World Show, TLBT member Shelby Rooker gave her Gold Merit

speech to the group of Drovers for the Fort Worth Herd. TheTLBAA was honored to have Kristin Jaworski, Trail Boss for theFort Worth Herd, as one of the the record book judges. She wasable to listen to several of the presentations as well. After hearingShelby's presentation on the history of The Texas LonghornBreed, Kristin asked Shelby to give the presentation the followingday to the Drovers of the Fort Worth Herd. As Kristin put it, "Thisis exactly what I have been teaching them. To hear this, with allthe excitement and enthusiasm that Shelby has is just what theyneed.” The next day, Shelby gave the longer version of her speech (ap-

proximately 7 minutes long) to the Drovers. Kristin gathered theDrovers in the cow camp area and put a microphone on Shelby. They had no idea what they were about to hear, but it was quiteobvious that once she started, they were hanging on every word. Her excitement about the history of the Longhorn Breed wasquite contagious. After she was done, they spent several minutesasking her about her presentation, and one of the Drovers told her that she had been doingthis for over 10 years, but after hearing her presentation, she was once again excited aboutsharing this information with the public. It was quite an experience for Shelby, and she has offered to give the presentation again any-time Kristin might need it.

Dear TLBT Members,The 2011-2012 Show Season was a great success. The numbers at some of the shows were a little less than usual, but

I am sure that is due to the economy and drought of 2011. I would like to thank all of our sponsors, parents andgrandparents. Your dedication is what makes the show circuit a success. I would also like to congratulate all of theGold Merit, Livestock Judging, Quiz Bowl, Hall of Fame, Showmanship, and Class Winners for a job well done. Youare a wonderful group of people and I enjoyed seeing all of you at the 2012 TLBT World Show! As this year comes toan end, we start a new show season and hope to make it a memorableyear for all.

Your new TLBT Board of Directors are: Tarah Moore (VicePresident), West Ryan (Treasurer), Lydia Faske(Secretary), Hannah Faske (Parliamentarian), AlexRivera (Reporter), Julia Faske & Nathaniel Faske(Senior Directors), Shelby Rooker & Josh Vinson (TeenDirectors), Rachel Faske & Reese Ryan (Intermediate Directors)and Shyanne McClendon & Jonah Faske (Junior Directors). Lastyear, we had a great group of leaders, and I’m sad to say that ourtime together is over, but I am excited to start working with thenew Board of Directors and hope to come up with new ideas andfun activities for the youth.

Our TLBT Leadership Camp is coming up for all the officersand directors. It will be held at the historical YO Ranch inMountain Home, Texas. During camp we will have meetings toplan for the upcoming year. We will be planning a new theme forthe year and choosing a new service project too. We look forwardto sharing that in next month’s magazine. Until then, I wish youall the best for the remainder of the summer.

See You on the Trail,

How has showing Texas Longhorns helped you? It has helped me in many ways. It has helped me to becomepart of the person I am today. It has helped me to realize thatnot everyone gets this opportunity and that I should be moregrateful of the privileges I am given.

What is your favorite characteristic of the TexasLonghorn breed? My favorite characteristic of the Texas Longhorn breed is theirunique horns. Texas Longhorns are known for their large horngrowth. They have many different shapes and lengths whichmake them all unique.

When and how was your experience in your first show? My first show experience was at the TLBGCA Brenham SpringShow in 2005. I remember showing a calf for a friend of oursbecause we did not have enough in our herd that were able tobe shown. It was really fun and I placed first with the calf Ihad shown.

How has showing and raising Texas Longhorns impact-ed your life?It has impacted my life in many ways. It has helped me to be amore responsible person which will help me in the future. Ihave learned to keep close records of my calf, take care of mycalf, and many more life lessons that I may need in my future.

larvae. First line of defense in the battle against flies is to keepthem from reproducing--by eliminating breeding sites.

Stable flies (aggressive biters that cause irritation) don’tbreed in straight cow or horse manure. They prefer decayingmatter high in plant waste, such as wet hay or old bedding.Texas A&M University did a study several years ago and foundthat if people don’t clean up areas where they feed big balesthis makes ideal breeding ground for flies. Researches esti-mated that the area around one big round feeder producesmore than a million stable flies.

In spring before flies emerge, one of the first things to dowhen weather warms up is to move feeders and/or spreadwasted hay so it will dry, or put it into a big pile to start heat-ing and composting. Otherwise, it may stay wet through sum-mer, providing breeding sites for stable flies.

PREDATOR WASPS- Second line of defense is to keep fly larvae from hatching.

Parasitic wasps can be purchased from several suppliers. These wasps can reduce fly larvae by 90 percent if you dili-gently reduce fly breeding sites and put out enough wasps toinhabit what’s left, and put out more wasps every 30 daysthrough summer. Even though these wasps are present in theenvironment there are not enough to control the fly popula-

he battle against flies is constant, but there areways to reduce these pests—without toxic chem-icals. Different flies have different habits and be-havior, so a combination of tactics is mosteffective. Houseflies and stable flies breed in ma-

nure and rotting organic matter such as old hay and bedding.Horn flies breed in cattle manure. Horseflies/deerflies breedin swampy areas and black flies breed in flowing water--oftenmany miles away—so it’s impossible to control them at theirbreeding sites.

Houseflies, stable flies and horn flies can be reduced by acombination of diligent clean-up—not letting manure or oldhay/bedding build up to create breeding sites--and use ofdung beetles or parasitic wasps. These tiny wasps lay eggs inmanure and their larvae feed on fly larvae. Dung beetlesbreak up fresh manure, making poor habitat for fly larvae. Flycontrol tactics are moving away from dependence on pesti-cides, due to concern for the environment and pests develop-ing resistance to insecticides.

IMPORTANCE OF SANITATION- Manure and wasted hay should be spread thinly for quick

drying, or composted. Properly composted material gets hotenough during fermentation/breakdown to kill fly eggs and

Page 53: Texas Longhorn Trails

tion unless you tip thescales by putting outmore wasps. A femalefly lays 3 times thenumber of eggs laid bya wasp. These tiny nocturnal

wasps spend their liveson or near manure.Adult wasps are harm-less because they don’tsting or bite. Femalessearch through manure and lay eggs in the pupae of house-flies, stable flies, horn flies and other flies that breed in ma-nure. Wasp eggs hatch quicker than fly eggs and wasp larvause dormant fly maggots as food.Parasitic wasps give best control in dry climates and dry

years. Number of wasps needed is based on number of ani-mals. Wasp suppliers recommend releasing them early in theseason before flies become numerous. A pen with one or twohorses or cattle would need 5000 wasps each month. A largerherd needs 1000 to 2000 wasps per animal per month. Para-sitic wasps will not make up for lack of sanitation, but usedin conjunction with manure/bedding/hay cleanup can behelpful.

DUNG BEETLES– These insects spend their lives in manure. Adults use liq-

uid components as nourishment and lay eggs inthe manure pat. Hatching larvae consumemanure. Some species remove and buryballs of manure containing their eggs.An active population of dung beetlescan bury or destroy 95 percent ofhorn fly eggs and larvae and about 90percent of other cattle parasites that arepassed in or depend on manure. Even if fly eggshatch, they can’t get back up to ground surfaceafter dung beetles bury the manure. Birds are attracted to ma-nure containing dung beetles, and tear the pats apart to eatthem—which helps spread manure and disrupt fly larvae de-velopment. A single manure pat without dung beetles cangenerate 60 to 80 adult horn flies. Some types of dewormers and pesticides destroy dung bee-

tles. Long-term control of flies is often better achieved bydung beetles (to degrade the manure) than by sporadic ap-plication of pesticides.

FLY TRAP– Biting flies that come in from other areas can be killed

before they attack your animals. One effective method is theEpps Biting Fly Trap™, invented by a cattleman in Oklahoma, now made and marketed by Horseline Products in Hender-son, Tennessee. Biting flies (horseflies, deerflies, stable flies, black flies,

mosquitoes, etc.) are attracted to large, dark objects such asthe shape and silhouette of an animal, so the trap is a frame-work with a large dark portion and some transparent panels. The latter simulate air space above an animal and under its

belly—where flies normally circle before landing to bite andfeed. When flies hit the transparent sheets they ricochet intotrays of water below, and drown. If you add a few drops ofdishwashing soap to each tray, the soap breaks the surface ten-sion of the water so the insects can’t float. They immediatelysink and drown. Research showed this trap kills about one pound of biting

flies per day. A 3-year research project at Cornell University,University of Florida and New York Pest Management com-pared 15 flytrap products and found this trap’s effectivenesswas10 to 1 compared to other methods tried. The trap wasalso tested 3 years on New York dairy farms, looking at non-chemical approaches versus pesticides—which only workshort term and may be toxic to other forms of life. The trap catches many flies in the evening when the dark

portion is still warm after air cools off; the fly thinks this is ananimal. It works best in an open area where flies see it froma distance. All you do is scoop out dead flies every other dayor so with an aquarium net, add more water and soap ifneeded, and change the water every 2 weeks. Each tray holdsabout 3.5 gallons. You can put an electric wire around thetrap so animals won’t rub on it. Many ranchers use rotational grazing and want something

they can move from pasture to pasture. The new portablemodel has an aluminum frame (lightweight and easy tomove) but is durable and can withstand 90 mph wind. Emptysandbags come with that unit to hold it steady in the wind;sandbags sit on the legs of the unit.Part of the criteria for participating in a new government

conservation stewardship program is that ranchers use envi-ronmentally friendly fly control. These methods include flypredator wasps, traps for house and stable flies, traps for bit-ing flies, walk-through traps for horn flies, fly vacuums, bugzappers or ways to enhance populations of martins, swallows, bats, etc. that eat flies. It has to be non-chemical livestockpest control. Dish soap for the biting flytrap is not harmfulto the environment. Some organic farmers use a soap prod-uct made by Amway, called LOC (liquid organic concentrate),which is safe enough to drink.

Spring Calving:1. Remove bulls after 90-day breeding season (July 20 equals an April

30 date of birth)

2. Water is extremely important as temperature starts to rise. Make

routine checks of the water supply.

3. Continue fly and tick control programs.

4. As grass matures, realize that the protein value decreases. The

feeding of 2-3 pounds of a high protein supplement (30-40 percent

crude protein content) will stimulate the digestion of the mature

forage; therefore, the cattle will consume more forage and will

maintain their body condition as winter approaches.

5. If additional summer grazing or hay is needed, fertilize improved

grass pastures with 50 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre.

Fall Calving: If not previously completed:

1. Wean calves and select animals to be retained through yearling time.

Breeders collecting weaning weight information should weigh all

calves and adjust all weights to a 205 day of age equivalent. Within sex

group, calculate a weaning weight ratio to be used as a selection

criteria. Identify all calves by sire group to determine which sires are

producing the superior calves.

2. Pregnancy check all females as well as check for unsoundness and

udder problems for culling purposes. Consider culling females that are

not bred, old or poor producers.

3.Vaccinate all heifer calves between 4 and 10 months of age for

brucellosis.

4. All weaned calves should be vaccinated with a 7-way Clostridial

bacterin, vaccinated for IBR-PI3-BVD and dewormed. Cull bull

calves should be castrated prior to weaning.

5. Replacement heifers should definitely be vaccinated for blackleg,

malignant edema, IBR, leptospirosis and brucellosis.

TLBAA Breed Advisory Committee’s

August - Herd Management GuideSpring Calving:1. Continue fly and tick control programs. Anaplasmosis problems can

continue until frost, so observe cow herd closely for animals losing

body condition and appearing anemic. Commercial supplements

containing 150 grams of chlortetracycline per 50 lbs. of salt are

available.

Continuous feeding of the tetracycline medication during the fly season

should provide adequate protection against the disease.

2. As grass matures, realize that the protein value decreases. The

feeding of 2-3 pounds of a high protein supplement (30-40 percent

crude protein content) will stimulate the digestion of the mature forage;

therefore, the cattle will consume more forage and will maintain their

body condition as winter approaches.

Fall Calving:1. Prepare for the start of calving season. separate cow herd into

management groups for the calving season (first-calf heifers, second-

calf cows, mature cows, and open heifers). Watch body condition of the

groups closely. Young females entering their first calving season

require special nutritional assistance to insure they maintain a

reasonable body condition after calving, produce adequate levels for

milk for their offspring and rebreed for the coming year.

2. Prepare for herd bull selection and procurement. Conduct breeding

soundness exams and fertility checks on all bulls prior to the breeding

season.

This photo of our 3 day oldlonghorn bull calf namedCactus Jack, C.J. for short, and our precious 10 monthold niece, Paisley Anne

Bunting, was taken 4/26/12at our ranch in Abilene, TX.We are very lucky to have acow that allows us to do justabout anything to hercalves. She trusts us

completely. We knew wecould get Paisley close, butnever did we expect that C.J.would let her sit on him fora few minutes worth of

portraits. He never even flinched! Since this photo, C.J. isnow a steer. His sire is CR Peso’s Poco Mas, BI81690 andhis dam is WB Daisy, CI244196. Both parents are grulla,so we are expecting great things for this calf! He has alldark gray points, we just can’t tell his coat color/pattern asof yet. If he looks like his sire and has the disposition of

both parents, we couldn’t be happier! A few years down theroad, we may have a picture of Paisley riding C.J. if we

decide to keep him and make him a riding steer.

Two Precious BabiesSubmitted by Jake & Kelly Allred, Flying A Longhorn Ranch

Blue Eyed Baby Submitted by Melissa Reese

My husband has beenraising Longhorns formore than thirty years, and I have been raisingthem for more thanten. I thought I hadbeen around the block. On the morning of

April 23, 2012, I wentout to check on my firstcalf heifers. Upongetting to the pen, Inoticed a little calfhunkered down on thefar side of the pen.

I could see from more than 30 feet away that something wasnot normal with this calf's eyes, they looked cloudy. With

fear running through my veins, I rushed across the pen to geta closer look.

Let me back up for a moment to explain why I was soterrified. my 2011-2012 breeding season had been plaguedwith problems from the very beginning. First, most of mycows got into an unknown plant while out in mountainpasture that caused them to abort. Then in March of 2012my favorite heifer went into labor and after 19 hours had anemergency episiotomy to pull a calf that had been dead formore than a month. I run a small herd, and all of my girlsare my babies. I grieved for everyone of my lost calves. Nowyou understand why on this morning I was so scared.

After getting close to my new little heifer calf, I realized thather eyes were not cloudy, but in fact very very light blue. Now my fear turned to is she blind? I watched her and hermom closely for the next 8 hours and with every passing hourmy fear mounted that she was in fact blind. For in 8 hoursthis little calf had only moved less then 10 feet, nursed once, and only stood for no more than 2 minutes at a time. In allof my years of raising babies, all of them have hit the groundrunning, never had I seen a calf that acted the way this little

girl did. I was now resigned to the factthat I had a blind calf. This went on formore than 36 hours, get up nurse, layback down, never getting farther than a10 ten foot circle, I was devastated. Thenat 3 days old my little calf just stood up,looked around, and took off running atfull speed. With my heart in my throat, Iwatched as she neared the fence, but tomy shock, she slammed on her brakes

before she hit the fence, spun around andtook off back to momma just as fast as

she could. She is not blind! I named her Lily and at almost 5 weeksold, she is thriving! She has not slowed

down since.

The TLBAA does not require thatyour holding brand be registered withyour state agency; however, we recom-mend that you check with your state tobe sure you area in accordance with thelaws there in.

Registering your brand with theTLBAA does not get your brand registeredin your state. Registration of brands variesfrom state to state. In Texas, you mustregister your brand at your countyclerk’s office. In Mississippi, brandsshould be registered with the Brands Reg-istrar with the Bureau of the Highway Pa-trol. Check with your local veterinarian, state cattleman’s association or yourcounty extension agent to locate theagency that registers brands. Also ask

them how often your brand must be re-newed.

The Private Herd number, or PH num-ber, as it is more commonly called, is often misunderstood. While it is re-quired for all registered animals, theTLBAA office does not assign these num-bers. The PH number is your own per-sonal identification system to assist youin keeping each individual animal’srecords.

Any system can be used. A commonpractice is the “Three Numeral System”.The first number is usually the last nu-meral of the year (9 for 2009, for exam-ple). The next two numbers are usually insequence of the arrival of the offspring. For instance, the first calf born in the year2009 could be numbered 901.

With a simple odd/even numbermodification, a breeder can add more in-formation to his PH numbering system.A common method is to assign bull calvesodd numbers and heifer calves even num-bers. For instance, a PH number of 903

could tell a breeder that the animal num-ber he is referring to is the third offspringbull calf born in 2009. The third femaleoffspring would be 904. Roman numer-als or letters of the alphabet are not ac-cepted for use as private herd numbers.

The PH number is the animal’s per-manent number and cannot be changed. The number must be branded on the an-imal, along with the breeder’s holdingbrand, before application is submitted tothe TLBAA office for registration. Abreeder is not allowed to duplicate thesame number on two different animalswithin the same herd.

Anyone requiring assistance with a PHnumbering system should contact theTLBAA office for assistance. If you havemade an error in assigning a PH number, you can get assistance from the office incorrecting the problem.
