Hold my beer and watch this! Every year when winter turns to spring, our thoughts move away from how miserable the weather was to, how much fun we are going to have fishing this spring, summer and fall. Not only will the fishing get hotter but, so will the weather. As you prepare your rods, reels, lines and flies (and lures, for those of you than can’t help yourself) for a summer of fun on the water, here are a few additional preparations I want you to keep in mind before you head for the coast or the lake:

• Protecting your head and face: Apply sunscreen at least an hour before going outside and, keep it handy so you can reapply it throughout the day. Apply sunscreen not only to your face but, your ears, your neck, arms, legs, hands and any other exposed skin. Also, wear a large brimmed hat or visor to shield your face from glaring sunlight.

• Take care of your eyes: Polarized sunglasses not only cut surface glare and enable you to see fish below the water’s surface but, they also protect your eyes from the effects of the sun’s reflection off the water. They will also protect your eyes from flying objects, like a Clouser minnow.

• Your face and neck (again): A lightweight gaiter, like the Buff, allows you to cover your neck, face and ears. It may take a bit of getting use to but I think you’ll be glad you used one at the end of the day…and who knows, you may make a bit of a fashion statement, too.

• Don’t forget about your hands: Gloves are not just for keeping your hands warm, wearing fingerless fishing gloves made of stretchable, UV-protected fabric will protect hands from burning. They can also help protect your hands from the inevitable nicks and cuts you experience in a day’s fishing.

• You put it in the cooler so, drink it: While sports drinks with electrolytes are fine, nothing beats good ol’ fresh water. Here’s something to keep in mind, If you stop perspiring on a hot day, you're probably dehydrated. Take a break from fishing and down some water, preferably in a shady spot. AND, beer is no substitute for water, keep it until you are back at the boat house.

This is by no means a complete list but, I feel these should appear at the top of everyone’s preparation list. I know that you already know this information but, if you don’t practice it, what good does it do you? Tight lines, Chris

Outings Reports: March Freshwater Outing to Harmon Creek - March 7, 2015 The Texas FlyFishers March Freshwater Outing was a trip to Harmon Creek, just above Lake Livingston, for white bass. We arrived at the cabin that “sleep 6” but found that it only had 1 bed, 1 loft, and a futon. Don’t ask me how we managed to get 2 more cots spread out in the tiny cabin. Mike and J. set up a tent, with heater, close by the launch point. Dinner the first night was bratwurst, cooked on charcoal, with sides. We had 17 hearty club members show up for Saturday’s fishing but, the sunrise launch turned out to be an overly optimistic guess. With frost on the boats and kayaks, the 0700 launch was delayed, and then, delayed again until we were finally able to get in the water. The last boat finally launched around noon. The white bass were staging in pools and stacked up in deep, cold ( 51°F) water and not biting very well. A lot of

the fish that came to hand hit small flies drug deep. I didn’t get a picture of Phil’s fly, but I watched him pull in a few fish without ever changing it out. All total, over 50 white bass were caught but, I actually lost count after people started telling me where and how many fish they caught. One Kentucky bass and one turtle were also landed. The turtle and bass were both returned to the creek, none the worse for wear but, not too happy about the whole ordeal, either. When it was all over, the kayakers travelled over 6 miles (by GPS) upstream and back downstream from the launch point, exploring and casting to every likely hole and pocket. When it was all over, the kayakers catch rates were just as good as the

boaters. With the water clarity the creek along with the hard sandy bottom and the fishy looking structure on the shoreline, I think we may have to try this spot again in the summer. Puck

March Saltwater Outing: Texas Prison Permit Roundup - March 14, 2015 Report submitted by Mike “Golden” Graham Hello my "fellows of the fly rod". I thought I would pass along to you a few moments and memories shared between one heck of a bunch of good guys down in Sargent, Texas during the highly heralded Annual Texas Prison Permit Invitational, without a doubt the largest fly only sheepshead tournament the world...or, at least in SE Matagorda County. It’s that huge!

Every year, this outing gives those of us who love the salt a great reason to grab our gear and head to the coast and meet up with our TFF friends for a fun filled weekend. It also gives us a wonderful outdoor testament to just how lucky we are to have been blessed to live in such a great world. Thank you, Jesus for the wonderful weather and for the hours you gave us to share in your wonderful presence. Our day on the water was awesome.

The outing kicked off at The Crab Trap Restaurant in Sargent on Friday evening with cold beverages, wonderful seafood and spirited conversation centering on the upcoming tournament. After the bill had been paid, the group gathered Alan Kulcak's place (herein known as the Camp house) for more lively talk and a fly tying demonstration by Alan who tied up one of his three-time Prison Permit Tournament winning crab flies. (Maybe, Alan will submit the pattern for the FoTM) Then, Alan promptly put away all of his tying gear, locked the crab fly away in his fly box and immediately told everybody with a wry look on his face, "What, I suppose you want me to tie you one up too?” Ha! Ha! Fat chance.

The day got started off about 6:00 am Saturday morning with everyone in a fog, literally. Fortunately, the fog burned off in about fifteen minutes and the sky turned into a beautiful, color-filled dawn, beckoning us all to the water. Rods were quickly assembled, fanny packs grabbed, and boats loaded. The last sound heard around the camp house was the downstairs’ screen door slamming shut as the intrepid long rodders departed to the launching ramp. As soon as all of the boats and crews were in the water and assembled in the ICW, someone gave the word and the fleet of shallow water skiffs blasted off to a slick calm East Matagorda Bay in Bimini Start fashion.

Now, for the rest of the story…!

Editor’s Note: The following evidence is entered on this date and it is stated to be the whole truth and nothing but the truth, give or take a lie or two. MG

WARDEN’S LOG, March 14, 2015, 0918 hrs. As recounted by “Warden Golden”

Boats loaded with well-armed wardens were soon seen peeling off to their rough and dangerous shorelines and hidden coves in search of as many prisoners “sheltered in hiding” as they could find and catch. Rarely is East Matty this calm and benign. No wind and crystal clear water greeted the posse along the south shoreline sand flats. It didn’t take long for the wardens to find their quarry either.

Page 8: Texas FlyFishers Annual Auction...Tackle Unlimited Locations or, Orvis of Houston, no later than April 29th, 2015. The Silent Auction will run from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This year,

With Wendell B., on the poling platform and a beautiful stretch of super shallow shoreline in front of his HPX’s bow, we quietly patrolled the flat for less than eight minutes when our first escapee soon appeared and was apprehended with a short struggle on the 8 wt., photo’d and revived after apprehension, the “perp” was quickly paroled (CPR) after being given a sharp reprimand by Officer Golden! However, after this early success, we found the scoundrels to be more wary than first thought and if we were to remain in the lead it was going to required us to abandon the skiff and set on foot to find their well-hidden hideouts.

We relocated to an area where several other wardens were found floundering around without any criminals brought to hand as of yet. So not being selfish with our skills, Officer Wendell and I moved into to the search area quietly. “Wholly cow Batman, who made that noise”…a quick look over to our right revealed Wardens Quigley and Puck using a little known apprehension technique of carrying on a Abbott and Costello routine each dressed in full waders finely appointed with at least nine Simms retractables, two wireless GPS, and an unbelievably bright ORANGE Cabala’s skirted sun cap. Wow! Now, riddle me this my fish brained fellow fishers…which one was Abbott and which one was Costello? Anyway I digress…we resumed our search protocol and suddenly everywhere around us were prisoners carelessly roaming around the sand flat awaiting our apprehension. Meanwhile Abbott could be heard saying to Costello, “Abbott, I can’t see a thing. Why can’t I see these prisoners?” Costello loudly retorted “well put away that retractable and open your eyes”! This banter went on for hours. You could hear the two off in the distance, one giving us all a blow by blow account of his identifying the prisoner’s location and then, announcing he had blown the shot as his partner was still trying to figure where to look and, what he was seeing. Then, all of a sudden there was this ear piercing howl from one of them, “I’ve got you! I finally got you, you stink’n striped sea bass you”, immediately followed by an “Oh crap, he got away”. All the nearby wardens shared a muted chuckle with each other, as the comedy routine continued.

Then, we saw Warden Kulcak nab one and then another. It wasn’t long until we heard many of the Wardens corralling escapees for the remainder of the day until finally, it was time to return to the camp, tired from the days search yet, confident that we had left East Matty a better place for the big sow trout and oversized redfish to relax in the marsh undisturbed, until the next time.

Once back at camp, the wardens regaled over their days catch and how much they had enjoyed the day’s activity and fellowship. Many of the wary culprits were brought to justice on this day. So, as the outing wound down and the taillights on trucks faded into the distance, those of us that remained took in our final vision, Abbott thanking Costello for having his back all day and saying “he couldn’t wait for the next big breakout just so they could re-use their highly honed skills of capture again down on beautiful East Matty Bay”.

OK, I know there are some of you out there that are shaking your heads and saying “BS, that’s not what really happened” but if you weren’t there, how do you know what happened? I would like to thank all of this year’s participants, especially thanking Quig's for all of his help in organizing the outing while I attended to my duties down at the Fishing Show, Alan K., as always, we can’t thank you enough for your generosity in sharing your Granny’s place. Please give her our best wishes for her return to good health. Thank you to all the guys who brought their boats and shared deck space with our brother fly fishers. I also want to send a huge and special thanks to a recent new member who, as being a “first timer” himself , dedicated his entire day to making this trip as memorable and fun for a Dad and his son who, I betting, had the time of their lives. Thanks to Lamarr, we all heard

you did a great job and, we owe you one brother. Thumbs up!

Lastly, the most important bit of unfinished business left to report, everybody (including Abbott and Costello) made it back to the dock safely, all boats remained floating and no boat trailer axles were drug across the swing bridge. Yea!

Now, in closing I guess it’s time to make the big announcement (drum roll please)…The big winner of the outing again were The Texas FlyFishers! No, really! I know I say that every year but this year’s outing was special in so many ways. These folks are super and, if you have never attended one of our outings, you might want sign up for the next one and find out. And, for those of you who want to know which Warden was able to capture the most prisoners using all of his cunning and skills…well let’s just say after six long and agonizing years he was able to garner his “GOLDEN” moment in the East Matty sun after trying to beat the local wardens at their specialized game! Who could that be? Mike Graham

Texas FlyFishers Booth at the Houston Fishing Show is a Huge Success

What a fantastic week we had. A positive result from positive people again leads to our huge success in getting the word out about our chosen sport of fly fishing. I know you all have heard it before that good comes to good people, and hard work pays well if not now it soon will! Well this past week down at the George R. Brown Convention Center hard work and good people both came together to represent the spirit and sport of fly fishing here in our great state of Texas remains…very “alive and well.”. This year as last, our booth at the convention hall was by far the busiest “non-selling” booth in this huge hall. Many times you couldn’t see the other side of the aisle there were so many folks wanting to see what the fly tiers were doing or to listen to past fly fishing adventures from one of the booth workers or to watch video of big fish being brought to hand at the end of a well tied lightweight leader. The energy expressed by the booth workers was absorbed and given back by those seeking information about fly fishing.

We heard stories how “my younger kid brother took up the fly rod a couple years ago and now he spanks my butt every time we go fishing…please tell me how I can get started”… or Dad used to fly fish and just loved it, but he’s passed on now so where can I learn?” Or, “I used to do that back when I was a kid and loved it but since I moved here from Missouri I really never thought there would be much call for fly fishing down here” WHAT? Or and I just love this one, “but that fly fishing is for small fish, I want to catch BIGGER fish…really? Each of those and similar questions were met with a determined Texas FlyFishers retort of “we’ll be glad to show you where, when and how!” After a five minute discussion these folks were thoroughly convinced that fly fishing is not only an acceptable method but just might be the best method to catch fish. You could see their faces light up with anticipation…could I really to do that? The look on a nine year boys face when he (with just a few minutes of instruction) was doing a perfect roll-cast projecting the fly 25’ down the aisle right into the target barrel using one of our TFF practice rods. All the while his Dad and Mom beaming with pride that their son or daughter just might be ready to join them on their next outing. Like last year, this scenario re-occurred day after day… young boys and girls getting their first experience with a fly rod that just might turn out to be their chosen sport in the years to come.

During the five days of the show the workers of the Texas Fly Fishers booth spoke with literally hundreds of folks who showed interest in fly casting, tying, and fishing. A resounding theme heard over and over by all of us was, “where can we learn the sport, what do we need, and where can we go?” That was all it took to get one of our show workers started! From there the guest was able to get all their questions answered and left knowing they had a place to go here locally where they could get with like-minded folks and enjoy together the spirit of fly fishing here in Texas.

However the big winners this year [insert drumroll here] were our dedicated “Team” of Reel Recovery workers. I am positive they set all kinds of records for donations received for their beautiful Fly Fishing themed quilt and other awesome gift items. There wasn’t a minute during the show that Dave Steffic and his awesome crew were not busy telling the public about our club’s efforts to support Reel Recovery. IMPRESSIVE WORK FROM OUR GUYS & GALS, IMPRESSIVE. However I do not want to steal Dave’s thunder and I will let him tell you how well we did. IMO we tripled anything I anticipated. THANK YOU HOUSTON! Texans helping Texans.

Now… I want to thank all the folks who unselfishly took time away from their busy personal lives to share time working in our booth bringing their TEXAS fly fishing spirit to so many people. You guys know who you are and probably feel like I…a little tired but completely rejuvenated by all the positive thoughts and Karma that fly fishing brings to its public. . Captain Steve Soule brought some awesome fly fishing video footage and also discussed casting techniques with so many people. Super big thanks to Ms. Stacy Lynn, who personally gave us a whole week of her time to help support our club, giving free mini lessons to many of the public that had interest. She also conducted two awesome instructional seminars that were well attended. Believe me when I say, what we did here at the George R. Brown this year will being remembered by the fishing public.

I want to say a special thanks to an inner-core of wonderful TFF folks who day after day gave their time to represent everything that is good about the sport of fly fishing. They tirelessly carried equipment, set up and took down displays, shook hands, spoke with kids till they giggled with excitement, they tied flies, re-accounted years of fly fishing experiences talked about tying special leaders, knots, and flies. They spoke of their past fishing experiences…fishing the Keys, Alaska, Montana, and/or the east coast. These are the guys and gals that make TFF just that much better. But you know what…I’m bett’n they would do it again tomorrow if called upon. So BIG thanks to John P., Paul A., George S., and …hey wait a minute this is sounding we need a Ringo too, well how about Skip & Mary Kay, Patti D., Dave S., Mike F., and our newest TFF’er… Ms. Stacy Lynn. WOW if that is not a group of dedicated bug “chunkers” I don’t know what or whom is?

As the door closed on this year’s show and after all was put away all I have left to say is …Thank you Jesus and who wants to do this again next year?” I’m in! Mike “GOLDEN” Graham

Fly Of The Month:

Mike Arnold’s “BBB” Submitted By Mike Arnold

Damon Seven Lakes

Materials:

Hook: Size #12 #060, #730, or #710 Thread: Size 6/0 color to match sili-legs or hackle Legs: Sili-legs, almost any color, even the legs from bass skirts, here we use olive/yellow. Body: Grizzly Hackle, Dry Fly, not Hen (for weed protection). Krystal Flash is optional. Eyes: Bead Chain: Silver, copper, black, or gold.

Tying Instructions:

1). Smash barb down. Mount hook and secure in vise. Wrap thread from eye of hook to even with barb.

2). Attach and secure Tail. One piece of Sili-legs cut into four equal pieces.

3). Attach hackle and tie eyes in at this point. (1/3 way from eye to point of hook) Allows fly to float down horizontally, not head first.

4). Palmer hackle forward behind eyes and tie off. Once the eyes are secure, build up a “thorax” area just in front of the bead chain eyes. This gives the fly a more finished appearance and gives the glue something to work with.

5). Trim legs 2 x hook gap: This is just long enough to keep from tangling and still allows movement on retrieve. The hackle gives a natural water movement to attract predators.

6). Drop glue on top of eyes and toward eye. Use bobbin to spread glue thinly over top and bottom area of eyes and towards eye of hook. (This is my most productive color scheme!)

7). Get up from the tying table and go fishing.

“Fish don’t get any wetter when it rains, Lightning is their savior”.

Fishing Technique:

Cast to area where fish have shown activity or have been seen. Let fly fall to bottom. Count to 20. Slowly retrieve, if you haven’t received a hit. You can also cast past the active area and let the fly fall to the bottom. Then reel in slowly, keeping a tight line. Do not strip.

Thanks, Mike

Until Next Month, Tight Loops!
