DEAR TCI CLUB MEMBERS,October and cooler weather are (hopefully) just around the corner and we are really excited to be hosting the Texas Club of Internists meeting in Dana Point, California this fall. October is typically a great month for weather in Dana Point & Laguna Niguel. It is hard to follow-up some of the incredible meetings that we’ve had in recent years but we think that everyone will thoroughly enjoy the Monarch Beach Resort. We have stayed there several times over the years and after the recent $40 million renovation the property is gleaming and as beautiful as ever. Many of the rooms and the grounds have sweeping views of the golf course and Pacific Ocean and incredible sunsets. The ambience at the Monarch Beach Resort is relaxed and they provide an incredible level of service.

There are multiple dining options on the grounds of the resort ranging from casual food on the beach to Michael Mina’s upscale Stonehill Tavern which is one of the finer restaurants we’ve enjoyed in a long time. There are several casual restaurants within 1-2 miles of the hotel in Dana Point and for a variety of trendy spots and a bustling nightlife, Laguna Beach is a 15-20 minute drive. The hotel does offer complimentary car service in the Dana Point and south Laguna area.

On Sunday, we will board buses for a trip to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Institute in Simi Valley. This is a truly beautiful spot and very rich in history. Lunch will be a White House Luncheon served in the hangar under Air Force One followed by a tour of the plane. If you have already visited the library or are looking for other options on Sunday, TCI will enjoy a preferred rate on the Monarch Beach golf links or consider a whale watching trip or Catalina Island excursion out of the Dana Point Harbor.

Spouses will head to Laguna Beach on Monday morning. The first stop will be at Laguna Canyon Artists where a select group of artists will spend time with the group demonstrating their craft. Lunch will be on the rooftop of Skyloft followed by free time to explore the shops and galleries of Laguna Beach.

On Tuesday afternoon, we will take a short bus trip to historic San Juan Capistrano for a relaxed afternoon. Our first stop for lunch will be Rancho Capistrano Winery. After lunch, we will walk over for a private docent-led tour of the Mission San Juan Capistrano. Dating to 1776, Mission San Juan Capistrano was one of the 9 missions established by Saint Serra. Following the tour and some free time to explore San Juan Capistrano, we will rendezvous back at the Rancho Capistrano Winery for a wine tasting.

Wednesday will be a day for spouses to enjoy the grounds of the resort, take advantage of the Miraval Spa, join in a yoga class on the lawn or soak in the beauty by the pool. Whatever you do, rest up for a fun night of dancing to the sounds of Undercover Live.

Last but not least, the CME program has come together really well with a very diverse range of topics. It has been fun to develop the program with the Chair of Medicine at UC Irvine, Dr. Alpesh Amin.

We look forward to spending some fun and relaxing time with each of you in Dana Point this October.

Warmest Regards,

Ken & Janet Mitchell

As a collaborative effort, between the Texas Club of Internists (TCI), the Southern California Region II American College of Physicians (ACP), the UC Irvine Department of Medicine (DOM), and the Indian Medical Association of Southern California (IMASC) we look forward to providing the continuing medical education program at the fall meeting of the Texas Club of Internists (TCI) in Dana Point, CA. TCI is approaching its 100th anniversary and is an organization of Internal Medicine physicians from across Texas. Their membership includes about 180 members divided equally between Internal Medicine generalists and specialists and represents a very diverse group of physicians. The non-profit group is solely devoted to providing high quality CME at an in-state and out-of-state meeting each year. Their last out-of-state meeting was in Baltimore and the CME was provided by Johns Hopkins University Department of Medicine and was superb. We believe that the tentative agenda that we have worked out for this year’s meeting is excellent and will be a stimulating and enjoyable program.

DID YOU KNOW?Dana Point Facts• The city of Dana Point is named after Richard Henry Dana, Jr., a Harvard-

trained lawyer, seaman, and author of the classic sea journal, Two Years Before the Mast. It was incorporated in 1989. Dana describes the area once known as Capistrano Bay as “the most romantic spot in California”. Today Capistrano Bay is known as Dana Point.

• On January 1, 2009, the City of Dana Point celebrated its 20th anniversary.

• Dana Point is home to 34,037 residents, and is characterized by nearly seven miles of prominent coastal bluffs and rolling hills along the Pacific Ocean. The most noteworthy of these bluffs is a unique promontory known as the Headlands, which overlooks Dana Point Harbor, one of the most significant landmarks of the Orange County coastline.

• Dana Point Harbor provides slips and mooring for over 2,500 boats along with over 50 specialty shops and restaurants. The Harbor attracts thousands of visitors annually for shopping, sport fishing, walking, bicycling, parasailing and a host of recreational activities. The Dana Point Harbor is also considered the gateway to Doheny State Park, one of California’s most popular beach facilities. The 62-acre State Park offers camping, picnicking, swimming, surfing, bicycling, tide pool exploration and more.

• Located in southern Orange County, California, Dana Point is approximately half way between Los Angeles and San Diego, and is bordered by the cities of Laguna Niguel and Laguna Beach to the north, San Juan Capistrano to the east, and San Clemente to the south.
