The UIL Legislative Council met in Austin on Sunday and Monday, October 16 and 17 to hear presentations from the public and make deci- sions relating to extracurricular activities including music, athletics and academic competition. TABC was represented by executive director Rick Sherley, who thanked the council for their hard work, invited each Council member to take advantage of the new complimentary Administrator's TABC mem- bership and asked the Athletics committee and the full council to consider restoring the tournament that was taken away in 2012. Eight other associ- ations including THSCA, TGCA, Baseball, Track, Swimming, Tennis, Golf, Cross Country and Basketball Officials joined TABC in the quest to restore the tournament, matches or games that were lost. Due to the close result of an August survey sent to superintendents, the Council chose to place the request on a referendum ballot to be voted on by all superintendents in all classes in January. It will also include all sports except football. The survey for basketball only, showed 49% (all classes included) in favor, but 50% against. Thus the Council decided to put the question on a referendum ballot instead of passing it at their meet- ing. In the survey, 6A and 5A schools were heavily in favor, while 4A and 3A were close to favoring the proposal and 2A and 1A schools were opposed. Thus the referendum will probably be decided by the 3A and 4A schools. We will keep you posted when the voting has been complet- ed near the end of this bas- ketball season. If it passes, it will go into effect for the 2017-18 season. Greetings! Many of you have either already conducted your first practice, or will within the next week. Greetings!

Many of you have either already conducted your first practice, or will within the next week. This is always an exciting time of year, full of hopes and high expectations. Plato said, “The beginning is the most important part of the work.” Of course, the first practice is always full of energy and anticipation. TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 2

Since 1994 every boy who played basketball at Nazareth high school has made at least one trip to the state tournament as a play-er. The Swifts made their first appearance in 1980 under Coach Bud Birks and made 3 more trips during the 1980s, two under Joe Lombard and one with Johnny Hampton. Since 1994 they have qualified under the guidance of Mark McKeever (94), Mike Scarbrough (96, 97, 01, 02 and 06), three with Zach Boxell (07, 08 and 10) and in 2014 led by their present coach Nathan Branum. The Swifts are favored to fight it out with Happy for the region I championship so the tradition could continue. ********************************************************************************************************** TABC past president and Texas basketball coaching legend Larry Brown (no the other one) is on the move again. He recently took the job of Special Assistant to the head coach at Texas Tech University under new coach Chris Beard. It is good to have LB back in Texas where his son Matt just took over the reins at 6A Manor near Austin. Matt developed a powerhouse program at 4A Wharton before taking the Manor job. ********************************************************************************************************** The saying, "you can't keep a good man down" applies to Cameron Copley of Canadian HS. Last December he broke the scaphoid bone in his wrist but not only finished the football season but another state championship basketball season as well. After compet-ing in the state tennis tournament in May he was casted for 6 weeks then had a screw inserted. He got back on the football field on September 12 and in his first game back had 7 receptions for 152 yards and a TD and played safety on defense. When football sea-son ends he will go for his fourth state basketball championship. Due to his presence the Wildcats will be state ranked even though they move up to class 3A. His coach is his dad, Andy Copley. ********************************************************************************************************** The Dodd City girls were a 32-2 regional finalist last year and have high hopes with four all region players returning, two of whom were all state. Coach Alex Stephenson had no seniors on the team that lost to state champ Lipan 81-76 in the regional final. Look for the two teams to battle for the final four trip again as Lipan made the state tournament for the seventh time but enjoyed the school’s first state championship under coach Amber Branson and would love to try again. ********************************************************************************************************** The Wharton boys have a new head coach with Seth Due moving up from the assistant's position. But expect the Tigers to be formi-dable again as he welcomes back 3 players who have been to 3 regional tournaments. Wharton was 31-7 last year losing to La-Marque in the regional final and has plenty of depth including a district champ JV. The Tigers also led the state in three point field goals made. ********************************************************************************************************** The Slocum girls were 29-6 last year losing to final four team LaPoynor by 6. The Lady Mustangs dropped down from 2A to 1A and Coach Dustin Bates returns 6 players from that team including the district MVP and another all region player to go with a 16-4 district champ JV squad. ********************************************************************************************************** The Dallas Lincoln boys became the first state champ in 20 years to have 14 losses, but not without good reason. Cedric Patterson's team plays a schedule loaded with 5A and 6A teams which prepares his team for anything 4A has to offer. The Tigers return plenty of firepower to repeat as champs in 2017. ********************************************************************************************************** LaMarque boys Coach David Montano returns 8 players from a 32-9 final four team that lost by 3 points to the 4A state champs. Only now the Cougars will be competing in class 3A and are ready to give it another shot. East Chambers, Teague, Hemp-stead, Rice, and Kountze among others are loaded and welcome a chance to derail the Cougar express. ********************************************************************************************************** Jason Cooper's Claude team was 27-5 last year and returns 10 of 11 varsity players from that squad. Three have started since their sophomore season and four are seeking their fourth varsity letter. One was all state last year so watch out for the Lady Mustangs who are hungry for more. ********************************************************************************************************** Last year Santa Rosa came within a basket of making the final four. Coach Johnny Cipriano returns three all district players includ-ing the MVP from that 26-9 regional finalist. The Warriors are the favorites to represent region IV in San Antonio. ********************************************************************************************************** Sue Cannon will hit milestone career win # 1,100 with the Lady Trojans 10th win this season and it could come ear ly. Euless Trinity was 28-4 and an undefeated district champion last year and they return all 5 starters and 11 letter winners including the dis-trict MVP. Look for Sue to blow by that milestone and continue to the next one in her Hall of Fame career. ********************************************************************************************************** TABC Board of Directors member Darrell Hageman is the only boys’ basketball coach Round Rock McNeil has ever had. After opening McNeil 25 years ago he has led them to 20 playoff appearances. The Mavericks are looking for their second final four as one of the favorites to capture the region II-6A crown. With three starters back from a 25-8 district champion we won't bet against them. ********************************************************************************************************** Last year Dickinson's boys of district 24-6A made their first playoff appearance in 11 years. All five starters and six other lettermen give Coach Jason Wilson’s reason to feel good about two in a row. The Gators who were 28-8, lost by 5 in bi-district to Alief Taylor, a regional tournament team, so a longer playoff run would not be a surprise. ********************************************************************************************************** Girls district 7-6A boasts six teams that won 20 games or more a year ago led by Duncanville's 39-0 state champs. Seven of the eight district members made the playoffs last year so while everyone tries to unseat Cathy Self-Morgan’s Lady Pantherettes and stop their win streak, they will also be fighting it out for the four playoff spots. Good traditions, players and coaching makes district 7-6A a league with no nights off. Wow! (Continued on page 3)

(Continued from page 2) The Sanford-Fritch boys of district 1-2A made the playoffs for the first time in nine years in 2016. Coach Wayne Parker returns four starters to a starting lineup that averages 6'4 per man so the Eagles hope to do it again. Their chances look good as they now have playoff experience and dropped from class 3A to 2A. ********************************************************************************************************** Last year in region III-6A girls North Shore and Clear Springs met in the regional finals with Allison Campbell's Lady Mustangs edging Pam Crawford's Chargers for the final four spot. They could meet again as North Shore returns all everything 25 points a game Chastity Parker from a 36-2 final four team and Clear Springs returns four starters including the district MVP from a 30-7 regional finalist. A host of other region III teams will try to spoil the party for those two. ********************************************************************************************************** The Jefferson boys of district 16-3A have a new coach in Treston Dowell, last year’s state champion coach at Avinger where he also starred as a player. Also moving 24 miles down the road from Avinger to Jefferson was 1A player of the year Grayson Early and two other Avinger returning starters. Jefferson was already the district favorite and now their chances just got better. It will be interesting to see how the Avinger transfers compete in 3A in general and region II in particular with Dallas Madison, Triple A Academy and Ponder lurking, among others. Meanwhile new Avinger coach Lane Loyd has only six boys in Avinger HS to work with and 3 have never played basketball. ********************************************************************************************************** JD Mayo from Joshua H.S. just set a new record for administrator memberships with TABC. He personally visited with each campus and signed up 27 of them. With his boys coaches he has 31 total on board with TABC. Way to go J.D.!!

Herb More became the 40th president of TABC at the close of last spring’s clinic. The 39 Past Presidents with the years they served as presi-dent and a brief note on each are listed below. Each one of these people served as an executive officer of TABC for four years and that was fol-lowing a three year term on the board of directors. TABC would like to both recognize and thank each of these coaches for their commitment, ser-vice and dedication.

The pre-season ranking are up on the TABC web site. www.tabchoops.org The rankings are

based on all of the information that has been received up to this point and are always a topic

for discussion and often a motivation for some teams. The pre-season rankings are an effort to

pick the teams most likely to make the final four in San Antonio in the top ten, and those most likely to make the regional final four in the top

25. The new rankings will appear on the TABC web site weekly once games begin and will also

be sent to media outlets via the Associated Press. The list of District Favorites which picks the top

four in each district will be up on the TABC website in November.
