Anuradha; aged 33 (passed VIIIth Std.), I am married and have three children (2 boys, 1 girl). I am a resident of Takyel Kolom Leikai, Imphal West District, Manipur. I had divorced my husband and was staying at my parental home. On the middle week of December 2001 (Saturday). My mother asked me to come at her hotel she runs for serving the customers. I and my three years old son went to the hotel to help my old mother. I was washing glasses, plates, spoons at the back side of the hotel and my son was playing inside the hotel. Suddenly, I heard the sound of gunshots, I ran outside of the hotel and found one Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel lying dead. I took my child in my arms and ran towards my home, my whole body was trembling. I did not know where I was heading for (whether towards home or some where else). I was nine months pregnant and my abdomen was  paining badly, I suddenly remembered that my mother was still in the hotel while the incident took place and was worried about her also. I was running blindly but I came to realized that I was near the house of my father’s sister at Tera, I was restless and terrified. After some hours my mother along with some local Meira Paibi (women association) member came searching for me. They asked me to come back home but I did not felt like going back because of the fearful incident. I requested them to let me stay at my aunt’s home for sometimes and thus they left me at my aunt’s place. In the evening as it was beginning to get dark, some local elders came to my aunt’s house and suggested to stay at my home or else the security personnel or police might suspect that you were involved in the shoot out. So they dropped me home at around 7.00pm. Soon after I was drooped home police personnel of Lamphel police station came to my house and commented that one lady was reported to be standing near the slain C.R.P.F and they knowingly asked me whether the lady was me or not, I responded “yes”. Immediately they asked me to come along with them at the police station for interrogation. Fortunately family elders and Meira Paibis console the  police personnel and assured them that she will come to the police station the next day. Thus, the police personnel left me by saying that I have to come at police station on the next day at 5.00a.m. That night I did not feel like to eat and even fear to sleep thinking that the police personnel might come again in the night.

TESTIMONY OF Mrs. ANURADHA

My name is N. Anuradha; aged 33 (passed VIIIth Std.), I am married and have three

children (2 boys, 1 girl). I am a resident of Takyel Kolom Leikai, Imphal West

District, Manipur. I had divorced my husband and was staying at my parental home.

On the middle week of December 2001 (Saturday). My mother asked me to come at

her hotel she runs for serving the customers. I and my three years old son went to the

hotel to help my old mother. I was washing glasses, plates, spoons at the back side of

the hotel and my son was playing inside the hotel. Suddenly, I heard the sound of

gunshots, I ran outside of the hotel and found one Central Reserve Police Force

(CRPF) personnel lying dead. I took my child in my arms and ran towards my home,

my whole body was trembling. I did not know where I was heading for (whether

towards home or some where else). I was nine months pregnant and my abdomen was

paining badly, I suddenly remembered that my mother was still in the hotel while the

incident took place and was worried about her also. I was running blindly but I came

to realized that I was near the house of my father’s sister at Tera, I was restless and

did not felt like going back because of the fearful incident. I requested them to let me

The next day, I along with my father and some Meira Paibi members went to the

Lamphel police station. They told me to come inside the chamber of the officer in

charge (OC). The officer in charge said, “so, you are the lady who was involved in

yesterday’s shoot out”, he went out of the room leaving me alone in the room, no one

was allowed to enter the room till 7.00 pm. Even Meira Paibi member who try to give

me eatable things were also not allowed to enter inside the room. After few minute

passed 7.00pm, some police personnel enter the room and started asking question,

whether I had given the gun to the Under Ground to shoot the C.R.P.F personnel, they

further asked me where I had hidden the gun. One of the police personnel pointed his

pistol on my forehead, they Then made fun of me by saying “things will come out

right if we kick on her bulging belly (due to pregnancy)” they even threaten to kill my

dumb brother saying that he is also involved in the killing of C.R.P.F personnel. At

that time I could not express anything due to fear. What I utter was “I don’t know, I

am innocent”. I started to feel the pain in my abdomen as that particular day was my

delivery date as given by the doctor. Even though they tried to keep me in their

custody, due to the effort of the Meira Paibi members, I was released; I was told that I

would be arrested again if there were any case against me.

The next day, I gave birth to lovely son. On the fourth day after my child’s delivery,

in spite of my health condition, I was told to come at police station again, I was

compelled to follow their orders. I along with some local elders and Meira Paibi went

to the police station. Again they asked me where the weapons were kept, to whom I

gave the weapon and how much money I got from the U.Gs for keeping the weapon.

Not only this, there were irrelevant question put on me that they had arrested the

U.Gs involved in the incident and that U.Gs reviled that you had gaven the weapon to

him, after series of queries I was finally released. I was terrified, I even forgot that Ihad given birth to a new born child a few day back, seeing my status, our local Meira

Paibi member used to guard me at my home everyday. On the next day, some

personnel in civil dress came to meet me, they said they came to help me and asked

the same question put up during my stay at the police station. After some days some

C.R.P.F personnel came and assault my old father, due to this repeated disturbance, I

used to stay at my neighboring house, I slept during daytime and in the night time I

stayed awake with the backdoor open, so that I could hurriedly slip away if something

unusual come up.
