TESTIMONIALSTeachersChristine Gemmell-Ferguson, Darlington College‘The STEM events at Teesside University were invaluable to our students. They gave a real taste of university life, along with fun, informative workshops that are relevant to their current study. Our students particularly enjoyed the flight simulator, smoothie making and learning about renewable energy. A huge thank you to Teesside University for providing such a great experience.’
Marianne Hill, Sunderland College
‘The STEM event at Teesside was a brilliant opportunity for our young people to learn about university and gain valuable insight into subject areas. The taster sessions provided interesting hands-on activities to engage the students, where they could learn more about the range of courses offered at Teesside University. Our students praised the friendly and welcoming staff who provided a first-class experience, as well as the excellent lecturers who delivered the sessions with passion and enthusiasm.’
StudentsDurham Sixth Form Session: Interior design
‘I thought the interior design teachers were amazing, their enthusiasm for the subject has changed my perspective on design. The engagement in conversation gave me a positive insight into the course.’
Sunderland College Session: Mechanical and aerospace engineering, and instrumentation and control engineering.
‘It was a very enjoyable day and I learnt a lot about mechanical and electrical engineering. The highlight was having a go in the flight simulator. I also appreciated the chance to speak to the staff which was a great help. Today has confirmed that engineering is the route I want to follow.’

STEMulate12 and Design sTUdio12 provide Year 12 students studying science, technology, engineering, mathematics and design subjects the opportunity to experience practical applications in a university laboratory or workshop setting. We pay particular attention to include information and activities that help schools and colleges meet their statutory obligations to provide independent careers guidance.
Once students have taken part in STEMulate12 and/or Design sTUdio12, they also receive a participation certificate worth 20 tariff points – this can be used towards meeting entry requirements for a relevant Teesside University degree in the School of Science, Engineering & Design.
How does it benefit students?Sessions require students to draw on knowledge from topics they have covered in their Year 12 curriculum for practical problem solving. By applying theory in a real laboratory setting, they gain a better understanding of the theory and its relevance to solving problems. We use worksheets during these sessions to contextualise students’ learning by providing real-world examples where the theory is relevant. Each session provides an overview of relevant degree courses and typical careers that these can lead to.
How does it benefit schools and colleges? The Department for Education provides statutory guidance1 on providing careers advice to students. This guidance expands on the aim set out in the Government’s Careers Strategy2 ‘to make sure that all young people in secondary school get a programme of advice and guidance that is stable, structured and delivered by individuals with the right skills and experience’. To achieve this aim, the careers strategy sets out that every school and academy providing secondary education should use the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s benchmarks3 to develop and improve their careers provision. Our events have been specifically designed to help schools and colleges achieve against the Gatsby benchmarks, assisting them to fulfil their legal duties.

What dates are available? You can bring your students for a full-day session on one of these dates.
Can the University organise an event for one school or college?Yes we can. If you have 60 or more Year 12 students attending then we can, on request, run a session just for your school or college. The capacity on any one day is 100 students. Individual practical sessions have a capacity of around 20 students.
Can teachers attend?Teachers are encouraged to attend and participate in the practical sessions. There are opportunities to forge closer links with University academic staff which can help smooth your students’ transition from college to university, resulting in an improved overall student experience.

Follow-up activities for Year 13
All recognised Level 3 qualifications are considered and applicants are normally asked to support their application with a portfolio of creative work.
Consideration is also given to students without formal qualifications but with evidence of practical art and design experience at an appropriate level. This could, for example, be evidenced through a portfolio of work.
Subject requirements for admission (additional grade criteria apply)Alternative Level 3 qualifications which include substantial coverage of essential subjects are also considered (for example engineering or technology in place of physics)
Participation certificates Soon after your students have started their Year 13 studies we can visit your college to issue participation certificates – these are worth 20 tariff points towards their entry requirements for studying a degree course in science, engineering, design or maths subject in the School of Science, Engineering & Design at Teesside University.
Year 13 follow-up workshop sessionsDuring the visit we can also offer advice on UCAS applications including writing personal statements, and provide information on higher and degree apprenticeship opportunities.
