She states, “I do not belong to that sobbing school of Negrohood.” It is hard to be feel negative and stereotyped about things that seem to hold you back. Stereotypes can be wrong and should be resisted.

According to chart B, only 5% of black Americans have a post-secondary degree and make over $50,000 a year while 12% of white Americans have a post-secondary degree and make over $50,000. Black people are not going to school and are not getting jobs that make them money. White people are getting their schooling and eventually making money.

Frederick Douglass tells slaves that they should not celebrate the 4th of July. He states that compared to the United States no nation is “more shocking and bloody.” Black people celebrate a day when they are still slaves even though the day is about freedom and against unfair treatment. They should consider why white people like the fourth of July and realize that they are hypocrites.

Paine’s characterization of America does not hold true today because black people are still at a disadvantage. Black people are treated unfairly by people because most people, black or white, are racist. People may not even know that they are discriminating against people, but it happens. Paine’s beliefs that despite America’s differences, we are all equal is wrong. Differences always mean that some people will be seen as “better” than others.
