1 Management Summary
1.1 Overview of Current Methodology
The goal of this document is to provide assistance in implementing Test Management processes and a Test
Management organization within the scope of the operation of an SAP solution landscape based on SAP
Best Practices, ITIL and ISTQB1
standards.
Therefore, key activities are outlined and described.
The implementation of SAP Best Practices for Test Management within the scope of Change Management
includes three phases:
Design – All planning activities for the Setup and Operation phases
Setup – All preparation activities for Test Management
Operation – The execution of the Test Management processes and the work of the Test Management
organization
This implementation methodology focuses on the Design phase. It should be regarded in conjunction with the
implementation methodology for the Design and Setup phases of Test Management.
1.2 Run SAP Implementation Methodologies
As IT landscapes grow and solutions become increasingly mission-critical, the cost of successfully operating
an IT landscape becomes a key business issue. To optimize operations and to reduce costs, SAP has
embraced its understanding from thousands of customers and created:
SAP Standards for End-to-End Solution Operations that span customers’ mission-critical operations
landscapes to reduce the risk of failure and to increase the skill base
Run SAP, a robust operational methodology that underpins these standards and complements SAP’s
implementation methodology ASAP ( AcceleratedSAP) SAP Enterprise Support, a support offering that enables SAP Standards for End-to-End Solution
Operations at lower total cost and across mission-critical support systems

2 Operations & Optimization
2.1 Goal of the Operations & Optimization Phase
The project is now in the phase of daily operations. The main objective of this phase is to ensure smooth
operations of the designed process and continual adaptation to new challenges. It also focuses on continually
reviewing the current processes and, where possible, identifying needs and prospects for optimization.
2.2 Requ irements and General Cond it ions for the Operat ions & Opt imizat ionPhase
Before you start the Operations & Optimization phase, make sure all deliverables of the Setup and Handover
into Production phases are available:
The technical infrastructure has been set up completely and all tests have been successfully finished.
All defined scenarios run correctly.
The handover from project team to operations team is well organized.
The support team for the time after cutover is ready and trained.
2.3 Essent ial Resources for the Operations & Optimization Phase
Before you start the Operations & Optimization phase, make sure you have all resources with the required
skills in place. You will need a well-trained support team responsible for the after-go-live support. We
recommend letting the project and the operations team work in parallel for a certain time.
Furthermore, you will need resources that review existing operation processes and tool usage to identify
opportunities for improvement.
2.4 Key Del iverables of the Operat ions & Opt imizati on Phase
The Operations & Optimization phase does not end, it is an ongoing process. Nevertheless, you should
produce the following deliverables after go-live:
Establish a change cycle to include new requirements to the existing processes:
- Regular reviews of the existing operations processes
- Optimization and enhancement of the usage of tools
Define quantifiable measures to assess the Test Management process:
- Continuous assessment of the process quality on the basis of the predefined factors
- Regular revision of these measures regarding their informative value
2.5 Operations Support After Go-Live
A well-defined defect and incident lifecycle should have been designed beforehand in close collaboration with
Incident Management and should be adhered to. For the test management process, there is also an
organizational interface to Change Management that has to be clearly defined. Make sure that all participants
follow the defined workflow and stick to their assigned responsibilities.

2.6 Optimization After Go-Live
Based on a well-defined Test Management process and on the documentation and experiences from different
tests, the automation of regression tests should be one of the objectives for optimization. Search for newsuitable candidates for automation on a regular basis and revise the exising ones.
In addition to their continuous assessment, all defined success factors should be reviewed and readjusted
where appropriate.
You can find another option for improvements in the degree of accuracy with which the amount of business
processes effected by a system change can be pinned down. Therefore, review the applied methods and the
used tool support to achieve the optimal precision and amendif possible.
2.7 Documentation in Daily Operations
ConcerningTest Management, there are no activities to be performed on a daily basis since the need for Test
Management activities mainly occur in case of changes to an application system.
However, during a concrete project – either for implementing a new solution or for changes to an existing
solution – there will be daily operations. The activities required are those of the Test Management phases:
Test preparation and scope identification, test planning, test execution, and final testing activities.
2.8 KPI Monitoring and Optimization
You can perfomr KPI monitoring of the solutions in daily operations with the help of Incident Management. If,
for example, the analyzed results of Incident Management show that over a period of time the number of
incidents has increased enormously the one possible reason could be the quality of the test cases, which
therefore should be revised regarding their appropriateness and correctness..
For further details, please see the SAP Standard for Incident Management.
