You know that all blood types are needed to save and enhance the lives of patients, but did you know that different donation types are also needed to support the community blood supply. Bonfils Blood Center’s blood product inventory consists of red blood cell, plasma and platelet donations, as well as units dedicated for premature babies and other patients with special transfusion needs.

It is critical for Bonfils to optimize each blood donation to meet these varied needs. This chart explains how each blood type is most efficiently used. Please call Bonfils’ Appointment Center at 303.363.2300 or 800.365.0006, opt. 2 to discuss your preferred donation type and schedule an appointment. No matter how you choose to support Bonfils and the community blood supply, your donations are needed and appreciated.

Thanks to the following companies and organizations for being an important part of our life-saving mission. Collectively, their blood drives (January - March 2009) generated nearly 46,000 units of donated blood for our community blood supply. Their generosity and support is appreciated by hundreds of patients every day.

Bonfils Blood Center regularly uses 97 percent of donated blood. When you give blood you can be assured it’s needed and used efficiently.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY

On June 21, 2009, Marty Harrison and Dr. Mike Sawyer will compete in the prestigious Ford Ironman triathlon in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Why would two men attempt a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile marathon in one day? To pay tribute to an amazing man named Syd Harrison.Marty and Mike grew up together and recently reconnected only to discover that they shared the same athletic pursuits. Mike completed his first Ironman last fall and Marty will be participating in his first Ironman this summer to honor his late father.Syd, Marty’s father, was a longtime blood donor with Bonfils Blood Center. He had the universal donor blood type and also had special blood characteristics that are used to support premature babies as they grow stronger. He was selflessly dedicated to donating blood and always knew that the slight discomfort and small time commitment were more than worth it because of the benefit his blood would provide to others.Syd joined Bonfils’ Ambassador Program in 2007 when he could no longer support the blood center through blood donations which he had done for 40 years. The longtime donor was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and instead began sharing his story of how donations from more than 60

Jim and Margie Espy believe in the work of Bonfils Blood Center and have been longtime charitable supporters of its work through financial gifts to Bonfils Blood Center Foundation. Jim is a scientist and a volunteer emergency medical technician with Highland Rescue Team. From a scientific perspective, he has great respect for Bonfils’ work - as a volunteer, he knows first-hand how important it is to have a safe, sufficient supply of blood on hospital shelves when emergencies arise. The Espy’s created a legacy that ensures their charitable contributions will support Bonfils’ future work for patients in need.To learn more about the Bonfils Blood Center Foundation’s Legacy Society, please contact [email protected] or 303.739.4000 or visit www.bonfils.org.

blood donors and two stem cell transplants helped him fight the blood cancer.Syd appeared in several of Bonfils’ promotional materials and spoke at our Because Life Happens educational program as well as at Drive for Life X in an effort to encourage others to give the gift of life either by donating blood or by supporting the blood center with financial contributions. Syd surrendered to his illness on Dec. 30, 2008. We are eternally grateful to Syd for his longtime contributions to Bonfils and to the community.Monetary donations are accepted over the phone at 303.739.4000, online at www.bonfils.org or by mail to: Bonfils Blood Center Foundation, 717 Yosemite Street, Denver, CO 80230.

Donors David Mihalick of Pueblo, Virgil Olson of Louisville and Sandra Reasch of Arvada celebrated their 50-gallon milestones earlier this year. Together they have donated 1,200 units of blood that have saved and enhanced the lives of up to 3,600 patients. Bonfils hosted celebrations at their respective community donor centers and presented them with diamond lapel pins to commemorate their achievements.

For nearly two decades Mihalick gave platelet and plasma donations at Bonfils’ Pueblo Community Donor Center. When the center discontinued collecting apheresis donations in 2006, he spent a year giving whole blood donations. But in 2007, this dedicated donor began making a twice-monthly trek to the Highlands Ranch Community Donor Center in order to donate platelets, the same location where he reached the 50-gallon milestone on Jan. 19, 2009.

Olson understood the importance of helping others at an early age. Thanks to a good example set by his parents and siblings, Olson began donating blood when he was in high school, then continued during his service in the Army and later began donating with Bonfils after he moved to Colorado in the 1960s. After his retirement from then- Coors Brewing Company, where he gave blood regularly

from 1972 to 1993, Olson started donating platelets at the Boulder Community Donor Center where he recently donated his 400th pint on Feb. 24, 2009.

For Reasch, giving blood is a family affair. Reasch and her late husband began giving blood in the 1980s when a family friend needed blood to treat cancer. Reasch and her husband even inspired their daughter, who happens to be a 12-gallon donor, to begin the same life-saving habit. Reasch celebrated reaching the 50-gallon mark on March 20, 2009 at the Denver West Community Donor Center.

All donors, regardless of their donation level, are important because one donation has the potential to save and enhance the lives of three patients. Mihalick, Olson and Reasch hope that their achievements will encourage new and existing donors to make it a life-long commitment to support the blood supply.

Colorado Marrow DonorRises to the ChallengeWhen given the opportunity to save a life through marrow donation, Sol Leftin didn’t hesitate. Sol was the perfect match for a stranger in need last fall and following his stem cell collection in November he was eager to raise awareness of the need for donors and the work of the Colorado Marrow Donor Program (CMDP). He wrote to family, friends, neighbors and business associates encouraging them to make a charitable contribution to advance CMDP’s work. To entice them further, he agreed to match each contribution. CMDP salutes Sol, his family and many friends who raised more than $6,000 for this life-saving program.

Beginnings To celebrate the Colorado Marrow Donor Program’s 20th Anniversary, each Heartbeat in 2009 will feature a historical perspective.

This winter, 18-year-old Enrique Linares Jr., along with his mother, father and fiancée, traveled to Denver

from Cleveland, Ohio, for a very special introduction. On a very balmy January evening, Enrique prepared to meet the woman who gave him a second chance at life during the blood center’s annual Community Partner Appreciation Reception.

In the fall of 2002 Enrique was diagnosed with acute lyphoblastic leukemia. His doctors began aggressive

treatment of chemotherapy and radiation, but determined early on that a marrow transplant was Enrique’s best chance at survival.

Two years before Enrique’s diagnosis, Denise Camacho of Aurora, Colo., decided to join the Be The Match Registry

at the urging of a relative who works for Bonfils. More than three years passed before Denise got the call that she was a potential marrow match for a 14-year-old boy in Cleveland who was suffering from leukemia. Denise jumped at the chance to help save a stranger’s life and on April 11, 2003, at the age of 22, she made that selfless, life-saving donation.

Enrique’s health has markedly improved since receiving the marrow transplant more than five years ago. He’s

living life to the fullest spending time with his family and pursuing a black belt in karate.

Although the two had connected on the World Wide Web, the pair had never met face-to-face until being

Meet the Match.

Donor feedback is crucial to Bonfils’ mission of saving and enhancing lives. We track donor feedback to ensure we are meeting the needs of our donors. In doing so, we have found that donors often inquire about the donor questionnaire form.Federal regulations require the eligibility of a donor to be determined on the day of collection. Therefore, we cannot use information collected from a past donation for your current donation. This regulation also includes the verification of travel. FDA regulations and the documents we use to qualify a person to donate often change, so the entire qualification process must be completed each time to ensure that any new regulation, policy or procedure is being correctly followed.By following these guidelines, Bonfils can help ensure a safe blood supply for Colorado. We will continue to look for ways to minimize the time taken for this process.

Additionally, we encourage donors to complete the feedback survey as you enjoy a few snacks in the designated canteen area.During 2009, any donor who completes a feedback survey after their most recent donation will be eligible to receive a $20 gift card through a bi-monthly random drawing. Your feedback influences our decisions and we are committed to providing the best possible care to our donors. Please visit www.bonfils.org/contact/_us/customer_care/feedback.cfm to provide your feedback online or fill out the survey in the Making Your Blood Donation SAFE brochure right after your donation.

Why do I have to fill out paperwork every time I donate? Why must I verify my travel every time?

brought together by Bonfils’ Colorado Marrow Donor Program (CMDP). Everyone in the room could feel the embrace between Enrique and Denise as they set eyes on one another for the first time. Each gave heartfelt, emotional remarks to the audience. Enrique thanked Denise for saving his life and Denise thanked Enrique for being a fighter.

Introductions such as this one are rare yet serve to inspire others to give of themselves to help a stranger in need. Help us commemorate the 20th anniversary support of the CMDP. There are two ways to help - join the registry at any Bonfils community donor center or mobile blood drive or make a financial contribution to Bonfils Blood Center Foundation to assist the CMDP with its recruitment efforts. You have the power to help save lives.
