I mean the weather not the Prime

Minister, obviously! Although MrCameron was certainly very warm

when he greeted the winners o the

Tesco Mum o the Year Awards at

    Downing Street. Even when they

quizzed him on why the government was not meeting their various

demands. Turn to page 40 to read what these eisty women had

to say. And how he answered. But back to the weather and the

arrival o summer (well, almost). What better way to welcome ouravourite season than with a great big amily get-together centred

on a wonderul meal. We have created the perect menu or a

weekend spectacular, complete with great BBQ recipes, ideas

or cooking with the kids, crats and games or all your guests.

Plus youll fnd lots more to celebrate at this time o year, rom

the reshest home-grown asparagus (p102) to the hottest new

ashion trends (p63) and the simplest beauty secrets to looking

radiant all summer (p80). And theres even a chance to win

a luxury holiday or two to Barbados (p133).Were nice like that.

    Enjoy.

Facing diabetesYour article on diabetes (March/April)

was helpful and encouraging. Myhusband died of diabetes-relatedcomplications. Its easy to go into denialif you are diagnosed. Facing it, andadjusting your lifestyle, will add qualityto your life and hopefully extend it.

Make the most of early summer days

spending time over food with family andfriends good fun and good for us all

    The greatfamily get

    together

Theres only one thing we love morethan the weekend and thats sharingit with our family and friends. Gettingtogether for a good meal, prepared withlove, feels like a celebration even if theonly thing were raising a glass to is theabsence of rain. Gathering around atable or the barbecue for great food is

one of lifes simplest pleasures andweve found some recipes that arebound to please even the fussiest ofeaters. So invite grandparents, cousins, your extended family and yournext-door neighbours its a greatchance for younger and oldergenerations to get out in the fresh air.

Then, for after-lunch entertainment, weve got fun crafts and family gamesthat wont just keep the kids amused the adults can get involved, too.

When was thelast time youembarrassed yourkids and how?

DC: Oh thats easy! It was when Igave my daughter Nancy a karaoke

machine one that links to the internet. SoI was singing a Beatles song and realisingit was going very, very badly. I discovered

then what karaoke has given to theworld is to teach people who think

    they can sing really well,

    that they cant.

    Whatdid youwant to be

when you were at school?DC: My daughter asked me

that only this weekend. Ivealways loved the countryside, and I once thought I wantedto be a lorry driver. I definitely

didnt have a burningambition to bePrime Minister.

    If you

    were no

    longer the Prime

    Minister, what would you do?

DC:Oh gosh, have a holiday! Whatwould I do? Well, I helped my neighbour

with his lambing this weekend and I must saythat gave me more pleasure than anything Ivedone for a long time. He lost one of his ewes andso we were bottle-feeding some lambs. Then asheep got stuck in a swamp. Shed gone in torescue her lambs. We all jumped in up to ourwaists and helped get the ewe out and shes

been named Swampy. Im not sayingIm going to be a farmer, but I do

    love the countryside.

    Whatlegacywould you like to

leave behind for your children?DC: I thinka country that is fairer,

thats kinder, where people give more. I wouldhope that...we can build a bigger society, where

people feel they can play a larger part. Its not justwhat you get out, its what you put back in. I see in allsorts of ways the Olympics were a classic example that even in difficult times, this is an amazing countrywhere people are incredibly generous, compassionate, tolerant and decent. We just need more of thatbecause [it represents] the sort of society we should

be trying to build. And its what all of you [theMum of the Year 2013 winners] in your

    different ways have been doing.

    QHow willyou encouragemore women into

business and help createmore role models for girls?DC: I think its all about schools.I still remember the peoplewho came and gave talks to us,

and I dont think politicians orbusiness people do it enough. We may think what we do isunremarkable, but to a kid atschool everything is remarkable.I remember listening to people inbusiness or whod fought in the warand just hearing their storiesso allyour lessons are going on and thensuddenly your eyes are lifted upto something else.

    questionthe PM

DC: I had a history teacher called MichaelKidston who was so passionate about the

subject that he imbued a love of it in all the peoplehe taught. I remember him reading us the end ofa Gladstone biography when he read about howGladstone died he shut the book, I looked up and he hadtears pouring down his cheeks. I thought anyone whocan be that passionate about someone who died 100years ago He made it exciting and interesting and I

can still remember what his lessons were like. He hada great sense of humour and would do things that

teachers arent allowed to now. If you werentconcentrating this wooden block would fly

across the room. So there were all sortsof slightly unpolitically correct

    ways of teaching!

    subjects closest to their hearts

    Clockwise from front left Anna

    Kennedy, Mireille Williams,

Ann Maxwell, David Cameron,Kate Hardcastle, Margaret

    Aspinall and Claire Lomas

    Claire Lomas, from

    Melton Mowbray,

    Leicestershire was

    paralysed from the

    chest down in a horse-

    riding accident.

    QThe Paralympic

    Games really

    changed the public

    perception of people

    with disability. How can

    you cement and build

    on that legacy?

DC:Weve made somepromises about maintainingfunding at the elite level, which I think is importantbecause those elite

Paralympic athletes sendsuch a signal to everybodyelse. At the school-sportlevel and communityfunding weve got somemore work to do to get

that right. We will shortly be making

an announcement but Ithink its about taking theimmense achievement andsaying lets keep going anddo that all over again andmake sure were even moreinclusive in sport than wehave been up to now. I thinkwe proved that Paralympicevents can be the match

of mainstream sportingevents and so we shouldsay to other sportingorganisations, have youthought about that?

    Mireille Williams, from

    Bristol, helped to rescue

    her local preschool from

    closure and saved seven

    teachers jobs.

QWhy do you thinkpeople struggle tovolunteer within their

    community and how can

    you improve this?

DC: One of the reasonspeople dont volunteer as

much as they would like,I feel, is taking that firststep. People think, Id liketo, but who do I ring? Whatdo I do? Will I be goodenough? There are also

issues about liability andbureaucracy, which we aredealing with. Its now easierto set up a street party andhold a fundraiser. Weve gotrid of a lot of red tape. I thinkone thing we need to doisget youngsters right at thestart while theyre in school.

Thats why Im verypassionate about theNational Citizen Service

that once youvedone a bit of

    volunteering thebarriers to doing some

    more come right down.

    Kate Hardcastle, from

    Huddersfield, runs a

    company that donates

20 per cent of its time

    to charitable work.

QI believe in ourcommunities. Iwant to do more can

    you explain what you

    mean by the Big Society?

DC: Its complicatedbecause there are lots ofdifferent bits to this. Somepeople think Big Society isjust about volunteering orjust about fundraising.

It isnt its about muchmore than that. Its alsoabout devolving power toa local level so people whowant to do more in theirlocal communities can...I just think the idea ofmore volunteering, morecharitable giving, morelocal organisations, morecommunities coming

    together to fix problems

the more of that the better. Now I call it the Big Society you can call it anything youlike. But it exists

    Ann Maxwell, fromDalkeith, Midlothian,

    used the experience of

    her sons epilepsy to set

up a charity to help other

    sufferers.

QMy son Muir is anable-bodied 16 yearold, but falls into the camp

    of profoundly learning

    disabled and will require

24/7 care for the rest of his

life... Might there ever bea prospect of ring-fencing

    funds for high-quality

    institutional care?

DC: I dont think that itshould be either directpayments or goodinstitutional care for thosewho need it. You need tohave, particularly for themost severely disabled,high-quality institutional

care for those familieswho cant copeany moreat home.Sometimes itjust becomesimpossible. And Ive hadconstituencycases like this.Loving mumswho gave upeverything fortheir children, but [forwhom], in theend, the condition was justso extreme the whole familywas breaking down, and some element ofinstitutional care wasimportant.

    So you need to have

    that institutional care. But

I would argue that thesystem of whats calledindividual budgets and directpayments is a good system.Because the individual

budget means you try tobring together everythingthat your child needs, andthe direct payment meansthat you should get as muchof that as you want in a cashpayment to you, so you canthen arrange the things thatyou need whether its gettingsome respite care here orgetting a nurse over there.

Margaret Aspinall, fromLiverpool, lost her son in

    the Hillsborough tragedy

    and has spent the past

    23 years campaigning

for the truth as part of

    the Hillsborough Family

    Support Group.

QSome people arestarting to say theydlike some form of safe

    standing brought back at

football matches. Wenever want standing [at

    games]

    brought back

    into this

    country ever

    again. Id

    like to ask

    what your

    governments

    feelings are

    on standing

    in football

    stadiums?

    DC: I thinkwe should

listen to the experts, and sofar the experts seem to havesaid thatall-seaterstadiums are the rightapproach and we shouldntchange anything unlesssomeone produced some

    overwhelming evidence

[to the contrary]... But to mefootball matches now areabout all-seater stadiums, particularly when youconsider the size of the

crowds. I went to watchmy team, Villa, being beateneight-nil by Chelsea theother day and when youlook around the idea ofreplacing seats with standingwould have all sorts ofdangers so there are noplans to do that.

    Anna Kennedy, from

    Uxbridge, set up a

special-needs schoolafter her two autistic sons

    were turned away from

    mainstream education.

    QWhat are theGovernmentspriorities for children

    with autism? Parents

    need to hear something as

they cant see a light at the

    end of the tunnel.

    DC:We need to help

parents make choices. Theapproach this governmentis taking is much moretrusting of parents, sayingyou should have morechoice in safe, specialschools and stoppingthe closure programme, which we did.

And then we want to putmore power in the hands ofparents, whether its throughindividual budgets anddirect payments, so yourein command. We are alsochanging the statementingprocess to make it moreinclusive of additionalthings, other than education.

I just think theidea of morevolunteering andmore communities

coming together tofix problems themore the better.

amAnd stretchBefore you get up, point your toes up and

down 10 times, circle your feet five times clockwise and anticlockwise and stretch your

arms above your head, says chartered physiotherapistSammy Margo. These small moves will help to get

your circulation going and help you warm up yourjoints and muscles for the day ahead.

    7.45amEat asarnie

It may sound odd, but its something

you can make the night beore to savetime in the morning, advises registered

nutritionist Dr Carina Norris, and its ar

better than sugary cereals. And or a

hot start, just make a toastie. You can

keep it low-at and its a good way to

include some protein a secret weapon

to sustain you through the morning.

Try egg and low-at mayo, chutney

with a little low-at grated cheese, or

low-at sot cheese and a little smoked

salmon, all on wholegrain bread to up

your fibre. Grab some ruit too.

10.30amChange positionSitting in the same position at work, especially if youre slumped over your desk,

can lead to aches and pains, says Sammy. And being sedentary is bad news for

health. So keep moving little and often during your day (small breaks and simple

stretching recommended!) and youll reverse that C-shape posture. Make it

more fun by having a competition with your colleagues to see who can say

stretch time first. Why not do it at 12pm and 430pm, too? Heres just one easy

stretch to try: standing or sitting, interlink your fingers behind your back and

stretch backwards. For more work fitness tips, visit csp.org.uk/your-health.

815amFitness firstWhether on the school run or your way to

work, get out first thing, urges Sammy.

The light exposure helps set your body

clock so youll feel awake and sleepy at the

right times. Youll also be fitting in some

exercise early on. You dont need to do a30-minute session or get to a gym research

shows small bouts of exercise can be just

as effective. Try three 10-minute daily bouts

of exercise where youre breathing harder

than usual (like brisk walking) and youll

be getting the recommended amount of

    moderate-intensity activity for adults for

    inspiration, visit tesco.com/living. Or why

not join a sponsored walk for a charity such

as Diabetes UK? You could even take part

in a walk during Diabetes Week, 9-15 June

    (diabetes.org.uk/walk-for-diabetes).

    8amPlan ahead

Before you leave home, take just two

minutes to plan your day mentally,

advises GP Dr Radha Modgil. You can

do that in your head while you make a

cuppa, or write a list. If you live on your

phone, try a to-do list app such as

    Astrid or Remember The Milk.

11amGraze on fruitOne of the best ways to lower blood

pressure and reduce your risk of heart

disease is to eat less salt, says Carina.

Check labels more than 15g salt per

100g is high*. Plus fruit can help

    protect your whole cardiovascular

    system (heart, lungs and blood

    vessels), thanks to the antioxidants

they contain. So if hunger strikes

    mid-morning, choose fruit over salty

snacks. Making tweaks like this to your

diet is easier and more effective than

setting yourself a vague goal such as

I will eat healthily. Together, theyll

help reduce your risk of developing

health issues such as Type 2 diabetes

    and a stroke.

3.30pm Stand up!Whether youre waiting for thephotocopier or the bus,

standing presents a great body-shaping opportunity, says

Dean Hodgkin, fitness expert at Energie Fitness Clubs and

spa Ragdale Hall. Clench your buttocks to tone without

anyone realising, he suggests. Also, lift one leg very slightly

off the floor, and fix your balance this strengthens your

core muscles and pulls in your tummy (so you look slimmer

over time). If youre waiting for the kettle to boil, try some

squats. All these movements add up to big gains.

1pmGet out!We all mean to do it, but a break fromwork at lunch is so important. Its an

ideal time to get some exercise and also

your fill of vitamin D. Around 10 to 15

minutes of daily sunshine on your bare

arms, which youll get walking around

outside, should be all you need, says

Dr Modgil. Just be aware that the time in

the sun youll personally require depends

on factors such as skin type, and dont

allow your skin to redden or burn.

Finally, it gives you a chance to get

away from your morning mentally, says

Dr Modgil. Find a quiet place even if

its for five to 10 minutes and take in

    your surroundings rather than overly

    thinking. Such breaks (preferably mid-

morning and afternoon too) can have a

massive impact on mental health and

your ability to handle stressful events.

1 .30pmCast-iron lunchTry to incorporate some iron-rich foods

in your lunch, says Carina. The latest

    National Diet and Nutrition Survey**

revealed that the intakes of 22 per cent

of women in the UK are seriously

deficient in this mineral, which could

lead to the weakness and breathlessness

    associated with anaemia. Good sources

include lean red meat, beans and

lentils. You could eat a lean beef and

    salad sandwich on wholegrain bread,

or a bean salad or wrap. Drink pure

orange juice at the same time its

vitamin C boosts your absorption of

vegetarian iron sources. And bear in

mind, Your lunch should ideally always

    contain some lean protein, slow-release

carbs such as brown pasta and two

    portions of fruit or veg.

    4pm TacklehungerTopping up your

energy levels with a healthy snack

mid-afternoon helps you keep awayfrom cakes and biscuits, says Carina.A combination of slow-release carbswith some protein works best. Try acouple of oatcakes with low-fat cottagecheese, or a thin spreading of peanutbutter. Though whenever you feel theneed to snack, its always helpful toask yourself whether you really arehungry or perhapsbored or stressed.

Dont forget todrink. Its essentialfor hydration, kidney

function, skin and toavoid headaches, saysDr Modgil. As aguide (your personalneeds may vary), theDepartment of Healthrecommends 12 litresdaily. Choose water, milk and fresh fruit

    juice over fizzy drinks.

6pmEnjoyyourselfAim to actively relax before you

go home, says Dr Modgil. Doing

    something in an environment

other than the workplace or homefor as little as 30 minutes, signifies

the end of the day and helps you

unwind. It could be exercise (such

as walking or cycling on your way

home), seeing a friend, or going to

the cinema. But if thats not

    realistic owing to family

    commitments, a bath at home

    later on also counts.

1020pmZone outSleep is vital for health and so, too,

is a bedtime routine to help you

wind down from your hectic day,

    say experts.

To help you relax your mind

    before you sleep, take yourself

    somewhere you cant see to-do

tasks, even if its the bathroom,

says Dr Modgil. Then just sit for five

minutes. Close your eyes and simply

be aware of where you are. Noticing

how long it feels will help you realise

how much of the day you spend

rushing around. And if an issues

    bothering you? Tell yourself youll

deal with it tomorrow. For relaxation

    exercises, sleep-inducing music

    and other clever features, check

    out the SleepWell app via

    sleepcouncil.org.uk.

7.30pm Dine togetherWith todays hectic lifestyles, sitting down to a family meal may be a bigask, admits Carina. But research from the University of Illinois suggeststhat kids who share family meals at least three times a week are morelikely to eat healthy foods and have good eating habits. It also presentsa great time to connect with your partner and kids.

Try to ensure everyone gets a say you could even turn it into a gamewith a conversation jar of topics or questions. And for an easy way toeat a healthy dinner that wont increase your waistline, Fill up withvegetables, says Carina. Have a protein portion the size of your palm, cover most of your plate with veggies, and put starchy carbohydrates such as potatoes or rice on the remaining third of the plate.

    845pmMake plans

Take time to see your friends and family.

Try to make an arrangement once or

twice a week and set them up so you

have a months worth planned in

    advance, says Dr Modgil. Connecting

with your loved ones provides the right

balance with your work life, makes you

feel good, builds self-esteem and can

    also help lower depression.

    11

    pmGet into

    positionPosture is

    key for a good

    nights sleep,

says Sammy. Its about making sure your

body is supported correctly so it doesnt

twist and therefore strain your back, hips or

neck. Try this trick to ensure you start off in

the right position: if you sleep on your side,

place a normal-sized pillow between your

knees; on your back, place it under your

knees; on your front, put a pillow under your

tummy. Lastly, try to go to bed and get up

at the same time each day without makingit too early or too late, so you have a

consistent routine, and ensure you get the

optimal amount of sleep for you. Though it

can vary, on average, most adults seem to

need between six to eight hours.

Jenda Martin, 49, lives in west Londonwith her husband.

I was made redundant from my previous job inJanuary last year, which left us in need of extraincome so we could continue to pay our mortgage.

We found a website mondaytofriday.com thathelped us rent out our spare room to a professionalduring the week, which meant wed have the houseto ourselves over the weekend. Its tax-free cash, which helps take the pressure off financially and our lodger has become a friend, too.

Though Im working again, I still look for ways tosave. I carpool with a colleague and she contributestowards petrol costs. I do it with someone I know,

but you can use sites such as liftshare.com andnationalcarshare.co.uk to find someone.

Ive signed up to BzzAgent (bzzagent.co.uk).It sends you products and coupons, and youshare your opinions about them with friends. Its a great way to try new products for free.

The recession has also made me a savvierspender. I love fashion but started shopping atcharity shops in posh areas, where you can buydesigner bargains for less. I do simple thingstoo like buying cheap cuts of chicken andfish to feed our cat, as it costs less than cat food.

When I want to treat myself to a haircut ormassage, I get it done by beauty students atplaces local to me. Or theres wahanda.comwhich shows beauty deals in your area.

When we go out to eat with friends, well choose places where we can usevouchers. Shopping centres oftenhave free brochures, magazines andleaflets with discounts inside.

Its been satisfying to realise that I canlive for less. Im able to do most of the things

I want to do without breaking the bank.

    Its made me asavvier spender

Nellie Morley, 45, from Chiswick, lives with her two daughters. As a single mum, Ive always had tobe careful with money. But since therecession, Ive thought much more abouthow I can provide for my family.

Utility bills and insurance are expensivenon-negotiables, so I use comparison sitessuch as theenergyshop.com to find thebest deals. I also pick up the phone if youtalk to someone, rather than going online, you can negotiate a better deal.

I joined Avios, avios.com [previouslyAirmiles], which gives you points for creditcard spending. Its great because thatsmoney Id be spending anyway on petrolor the weekly shop. I use the points to payfor a family holiday with the girls.

The recession has made me realise thatyou can always get things cheaper. Youcan get group discounts at the cinema ortheme parks, even if youre not part of aformal organisation you can just clubtogether with a group of friends. With this

in mind, I signed up for joint membershipat a gym with a friend. Everything isincluded, so now I go regularly with mydaughters its entertainment for us all.

Most people know about lastminute.comfor holidays, but you can also use it to getdiscounts on activities. Ive taken the girlsice skating and to the theatre. We alsolook on free-events.co.uk to find outwhats happening in our area.

I love to eat out, so I bought a Tastecard(tastecard.co.uk) which gets me half-pricediscounts at lots of restaurants. At home, well eat vegetarian meals a couple ofnights a week because its cheaper.

I save on clothes for myself so I canspend on my daughters. When I shop forthem online, I search for voucher codesfor 10 per cent off or free delivery.

I want my girls to grow upunderstanding the value ofmoney and to realise thatyou can still do and have

    nice things on a budget.

Lisa Hart, 46, who is from Reading, lives with her husband and herteenage daughter. The recession really hit home for my familyin 2010. My husband is self-employed and, with less work around, we had to makemajor changes to our outgoings.

For extra cash, I complete online surveys. Its never going to make me rich, but it

adds up. With valuedopinions.co.uk I getpaid in Amazon vouchers, which I keep orgive as birthday and Christmas presents.

Ive become very good at knowing whereto look for savings. I use cashback sites andapps like quidco.com and shopitize.com,which effectively pay you to do yourweekly shop. You can also get paid forchecking in to places on the high street you dont even have to buy anything.

Living on a budget doesnt mean I cantdo things I enjoy. I love the cinema and

use showfilmfirst.com and freecinematickets.co.uk to find free local screenings.

My husband and I collect Tesco Clubcardpoints, which we use for days out andtreats. As well as earning points throughshopping, we collect even more by recycling.

So far, our points have paid for a yearlyMerlin pass, which weve used to take outour grandchildren. Ive also exchangedthem for restaurant vouchers and havetaken my father-in-law out for his birthday.

We love small luxuries. For our 25th

wedding anniversary, we had a lovelynight away with a hotel offer on KGB Deals(kgbdeals.co.uk). I also watch the chainhotels, as they do offers during the year.We were able to book a 10 room withTravelodge (travelodge.co.uk) during lastyears Jubilee bank holiday.

The recession was a lightbulb momentfor me because I knew I couldnt carry onspending as I had in the past. Now I havea much better relationship with moneyand feel my life has been enriched too.
