WHERE DOES IT GO?an investigation and renovation of Terra’s waste disposal
THE LANGUAGE OF RECYCLINGsome symbols and terminology you should familiarize yourself with
I can be recycled I am made of recycled materials
Single stream (fully commingled) recycling: all paper fibers and containers are mixed together in a collection truck
Commingled: a mix of plastics, glass, metal and sometimes paper material
Trash: food waste, paper cups, tissue paper, etc

HANDS-ON RESEARCHuderstanding the nature of waste generation & collection
Having suspended trash pickup on our floor for 72-hours, we were able
to collect and study the waste our department generates.
70% of Terra 5’s waste is non-recyclable
SORTING RESULTS
We recovered 36-pounds of recyclable materials
15-pounds of our waste was plain paper
Kiki & Remedy info-what has Remedy accomplished?-what’s not working?-why did you stop?
HUMAN INTERACTION STUDYstudent-understanding of recycling options on terra 5
What discrepancies exist between our attitudes and our actions?
How does the floor’s system differ from our assumptions?

?All waste is collected but we
aren’t sure where it goes next.
“There is no official recycling policy at UArts.”
“Gold Medal transports our waste to Blue Mountain Recycling.”
“Gold Medal handles our trash, recycling and bulk waste.”

ECONOMICS OF RECYCLING
Mayor Michael Bloomberg suspended plastic recycling and set firm deadlines to suspend glass and yard waste recycling in New York City because of budgetary rea-sons. July 2002
18 months laterafter obtaining better prices from markets, the city reintroduced multi-material curb-side recycling.

• You separate recyclables and dispose of your trash in the appropriate containers.
• Housekeeping collects blue recycling bags and clear trash bags from inside Pennbuildings and offices together and transports them to trash and recycling dumpsters at the buildings’ designated loading docks.
• Facilities then picks up trash and recycling separately, but with the same trucks. Campus trash runs are made in the morning and recycling is picked up in the afternoon.
• TransferStations receive trash from campus trucks for delivery to landfills or incinerators.
• BlueMountainRecycling then accepts Penn’s recycling at their Grays Ferry-basedMaterials Recovery Facility (MRF), where the recyclable materials we recycled oncampus are sorted, packaged and shipped to be remanufactured into new products!
