Page 47: TERRA @ Home Magazine - Christmas 2014

Nothing says Christmas quite like putting up the Christmas tree. The fresh aroma of the evergreen boughs, the look of bringing the outdoors inside, and the family outing to choose the perfect tree make it official – the holiday season has begun! The history of the first decorated Christmas tree dates to the 1600s in Germany when it was common to decorate a small evergreen with apples. The tree was introduced into North America in the 1800s with the arrival of German settlers. Today, over 5 million Christmas trees are grown in Canada with approximately 80% grown in Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. Trees are grown as a crop similar to any other field crop. For every tree harvested, there are 10 more planted and growing to continue to harvest each year making it a sustainable agribusiness. The most popular trees are:

Fraser Fir – The most popular variety of tree, good fragrance, shape and colour, best needle retention.

Balsam Fir – Great fragrance, shape and colour, good needle retention

Scotch Pine – Traditional, good fragrance, strong branching, excellent needle retention

Nordman Fir – Good citrus fragrance, nice shape and branching, 1” long soft needles with good retention

Noble Fir – Great colour and shape, strong branches able to hold a variety of ornaments

Although opinions differ as to the best tree, the tree team at TERRA will help you pick the perfect one for your home.
