(1) TERN’s context within the research data environment

• Relationship to existing data collection & distribution

• Data definition(s)?

• Open access data sets

• Future needs for data collection and integration

Data set definition(s)?

• A description of the research question(s)

• a description of the context of the field experiment

• a description of the experimental set-up

• report(s) containing raw measurement data

• description of methods and script(s) of algorithms used to process the data

• report(s) containing processed data

• report(s) containing analysis and published results (if any)

Page 12: TERN Facility Portals - Stuart Phinn

Open access (OA) data sets

• OA data is not common good. It is owned by the researchers who generated the data.

• Access to OA data is not unrestricted. Access to data is done via a gatekeeper who can restrict access to data sets depending on need and application.

• Use of OA data is not unconditional. Users of the TERN data have to abide by clearly stated and enforceable rules.

• OA data is not cost-free. TERN funds the installation and ongoing upkeep of infrastructure that is critical to the collection, storage, dissemination and re-use of the data.

(2) The Vision for the TERN portal(s)

• Goals for TERN’s Portals

• Strategy for Developing TERN’s Portals

• Proposed Architecture for TERN’s Portals

• Status and Plans for TERN’s Portals

• Outline of the Portal Demonstrations and Feedback Requirements

Goals for TERN’s Portals

SCIENCE• Establish “long term” science as a priority for terrestrial ecosystem

research• Enable key ecosystem science groups to plan and organise long-term

infrastructure and support

TECHNOLOGY• Encourage the long-term sound data management practices by

including data production and citation as research performance indicators

• Set the foundations for a permanently-held and curated data archive

PEOPLE• Develop a network of “long term” research scientists• Identify and organise groups to access suitable long term funding

Page 17: TERN Facility Portals - Stuart Phinn

Strategy for Developing TERN’s Portals

• TERN is promoting an open access approach to ecosystem research data by:

SCIENCE• The development and promotion of methods and tools for increased

and improved re-use of data

TECHNOLOGY• The development and deployment of a nationwide, robust

and open cyber-infrastructure

PEOPLE• Produce a paradigm shift in the practice of sharing, uploading

and re-using research data sets

Page 18: TERN Facility Portals - Stuart Phinn

Strategies for Developing TERN’s Portals

• Building Australia’s terrestrial ecosystem data store– Leverage existing large data stores.– Fund large-scale data collection programs.

• Improve access to data for re-use– Use existing protocols to document and store data– Validate data against current standards before making

them available to the research community.
