A later- than-expected turn could mean the storm's eye will make landfall on the extreme eastern tip of North Carolina as a Catergory 3 storm late Thursday or early Friday. Forecasters also say hurricane-force winds could reach New York's Long Island and Cape Cod in Massachu- setts. Stocks jumped Wednesday after reports of surprisingly strong growth in U.S. and Chinese manufacturing. The Dow Jones Indus- trial Average closed at 10,269.47; up 254.75 points. The nation's economic downturn has had an unexpected effect. The number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has dropped for the first time in 20 years as substantially fewer undocumented workers from Mexico, Latin America, and elsewhere are crossing the border in search of jobs. A radical enviornmentalist who took three hostages at the Dis- covery Channel headquarters in Silver Springs, Maryland, while wear- ing what police say may be explosives was shot and killed by offic- ers. The gunman, identified as James Lee, was killed by police fol- lowing four hours of negotiations. None of the hostages were hurt.
