Impacts on Africans and Native Americans

• Atlantic Slave Trade- Between the 1500s and 1800s more than 10 million people were taken from Africa and enslaved to work in the Americas. Millions of Africans died on the journey and on plantations

• Encomiendas- The Spanish government gave Spanish colonists land grants that gave them the right to demand labor and taxes from Native Americans living in areas claimed by Spain. This system had disastrous effects on local populations and led to the deaths of millions of people in mines and on plantations

• Plantation- A large piece of land (estate) farmed by many slaves, the products were sent around the world and made Spain wealthy

• Conquistador- Spanish conquerors who invaded Mexico and South America for God, Glory, and Gold. They conquered and enslaved the indigenous people, making Spain wealthy in the process

• Cortes- Spanish conquistador who invaded and conquered the Aztec empire in present-day Mexico.

• Pizarro- Spanish conquistador who conquered the Incan empire of South America.

Global Change as a Result of European Expansion

• The Columbian Exchange- The encounter between the

peoples of the Eastern and Western hemispheres led to a global exchange of resources, food, medicine, government, technology, disease, language and the arts and ideas.

• Triangular Trade- After North America is colonized by Europeans

develop trade routes between the Caribbean, New England and Africa. These trading relationships rely on products gained through slave labor and the slave market (p.122).

• Colony- A group of people are sent by their native country to another land

to settle for the economic benefit of their home country
