Term 4—Week 9

What an exciting finish for our schooling year with the

beautifully staged Carols By Candlelight on Friday night.

Congratulations to all our budding young performing stu-

dents! You are uniquely expressing yourselves and demon-

strating courage and enjoyment every time you share your

talent with an audience.

Our recording session at ABC radio in Broken Hill was

also a success. Stay tuned to find out when Leonie and

Tahlia’s songs will be broadcast!

Finally, the primary “Battle of the Drummers” wound up on Monday with Hannah Camp-bell and Nikita Mundy taking out the big prizes of their very own doumbeks! These young drummers showed commitment, enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn. Well done. Year 6 – 10 “Battle of the Drummers” final is this Thursday.

It is almost the end of the year and I would like to

thank the community of Menindee for welcoming

Steve, Edward and I to your unique little town. We all

have enjoyed your hospitality and making our stay a

wonderful journey.

A big thank you to Fiona, Daniel and Mr Debus for

taking a gamble to allow me to come here and be dra-

matic , creative and to share with you all the things I’ve

learnt through my career. This year we have seen stu-

dents and community performers excel in performing

arts. Thank you to Helen for taking the students to the

next level and I am looking forward to working with

you next year.

This year we have had performances for Harmony Day,

Weeping Clouds (NAIDOC Week), Lake Mungo, Men-

indee’s Got Talent, VIBE and most recently Carols by

Candlelight. Both students and community members

and the Menindee Ladies Choir lead the way so others

can follow in the world of Entertainment.

Thank you to all the sponsors who made Carols by

Candlelight possible and for Menindee Central School

for saving this family and community event.

Fiona, Michelle and Ailsa, thank you for your hard

work in making this night great.

To my brother Edward who is always there to help big

brother out in many occasions, I thank you for your

support. We would not have pulled this off without

your help and our funny team of workers.

To all the performers, thank you all, this only happens

because of you and the community coming together to

work as a team. A little thank you to Cheryl, Cindy,

Daphne, Greg Fennell and Fale for creating the stage

(lol). Ooh I nearly forgot Edie Bates who helped with

lyrics and tracks (lol).

To Jan and Daryl for hosting this event, to my co-

workers thank you for a great year.

Merry Christmas to you all and a

Term 4—Week 9

Christmas time again! If you are like me, you are probably still paying off last year’s Christmas debt. But here are some pointers for you to have a think about as we head into the silly season:

• Have patience out there on our roads and in our shops. I hope that you will show someone some cour-tesy and I hope that someone shows you some courtesy.

• If your Christmas party results in you photocopying your anatomy or wearing items of office furniture for a laugh - it is probably time to go home.

• Kissing work colleagues is never a good idea!

• Plan ahead if you are drinking by having a designated driver, car pooling, or sharing a taxi. Make sure you have enough credit on your mobile if you get stuck or stranded.

• If you are going out, have a trusted person be your ‘buddy’ on the night to watch out for each other and make sure you don’t do anything silly or are left on your own in a scary place.

• Remember that you may still be over the limit when you wake up the next day so make sure you plan re-covery time if you are driving or at work the next day.

• Be patient and show grace to your family members. Christmas can be stressful for most people when they get together with relations or family members with whom we do not normally see (and sometimes for good reason!). Work out a strategy ahead of time if you think you might fall into this category: limit your drinks to one per hour, drink plenty of water, if you feel yourself getting angry or annoyed, arrange time out for yourself by going outside, into another room for a while or by having a nap. It works for kids – it can work for us older ones too!

• If you are separated, be reasonable and try to compromise with child visitation and pick ups/drop offs. Remember, you at one time thought your ex was worth it and your kids probably still think that. Don’t penalise your kids for the fact that your relationship or marriage didn’t work out at this time of year.

• If you are travelling: check your car beforehand (tyre pressure, insurance, window-wipers, oil or put it in for servicing). Give yourself enough time for travel with rest breaks. Buy a book about games to play in the car to keep the kids (or your partner!) distracted and amused.

• Resist the temptation to buy big or extravagant gifts that you can’t really afford. Credit cards are really a personal loan to you, it is not really ‘your’ money that you have. So work out a budget for presents and a gift list and stick to it to avoid the January credit card hangover.

• Look after our animals. If you are going away, make sure someone is looking after them - that they have food, water and shelter. Lock your animals away or keep them inside on New Years Eve when there are fireworks so they don’t get scared and run away.

• Post-Christmas can be a nightmare for our RSPCA who receive multitudes of dumped animals or animals bought as Christmas presents that a person doesn’t want. Don’t buy an animal for yourself or someone else unless you can really look after it.

• If you are alone or without friends or family on Christmas day: arrange a special day doing something luxurious for yourself or doing something that you really like. Or, you can volunteer at some of our great local charities. You might even make new friends while you do it!

• Remember our less fortunate at this time: buy a gift or food for a charity. Drop in on an elderly neighbour or someone going through a hard time. It makes you and someone else feel good and that is what ‘tis season is all about!

• And, if you get into trouble over the break: come and see us in the New Year!
