Principal’s Report
Children’s Festival Of Music - CFOM Congratulations to our senior choir students who performed at the CFOM on Tuesday evening. You did a marvellous job, not only singing beautifully, but also representing APS with pride, respect and responsibility! Thank you to Ms Trute and Mrs Clift, for organising our school’s participation, and for preparing the students to sing the challenging repertoire.
Staff Professional Learning On Wednesday evening, staff attended a professional workshop here at APS, led by Simon Brooks to continue our learning in the area of Cultures of Thinking (CoT). During the evening, we reflected on our personal learning experiences, as well as focusing on the next steps for supporting and growing CoT within the APS context.
Attendance – Every Day Counts! Education for your child is important, and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best, and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
On occasions, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include: • being sick, or having an infectious disease; • having an unavoidable medical appointment; • being required to attend a recognised religious holiday; • exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g. attending a
funeral).
Following an absence from school, you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence. Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances, your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens, the principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why.

Principal’s Report Continued
Road Safety Around our School It is the responsibility of all community members to help keep our students safe whilst they are travelling to and from school. Again, I am asking parents to please obey the road rules when driving near the school, parking around the school and when dropping off and picking up from school. I have asked for additional council rangers to patrol both Hazelmead Road and Dudley Street, and to book parents/drivers who are not following the road rules. School Uniform Review - reminder As all schools need to provide an option of shorts / trousers for girls over the next three years, we feel it is a good time to review our school uniform for boys and girls. To review the uniform we need to form a small group that consists of staff, parents and students. I am looking for 3-4 parents, who will be able to meet during school hours. The small group of staff, parents and students will meet to look at options that will then be presented to the wider community for consultation. If you are interested in being a parent representative, please email me with your interest by Friday, 2nd November 2018 – [email protected] Skoolbag Calendar All known Term 4 dates are in the Skoolbag calendar. Events that have already been booked and confirmed for 2019 have also been added. The calendar in Skoolbag can be synced with your personal calendar, to ensure you don’t miss any school events. Stage 3 Ethics This week we welcome Monica E who will be teaching the Stage 3 ethics class. Music Performances It has been a musical day today with the Performance Band entertaining new parents at the Kindergarten orientation session. Then at 12:30pm the K-2 students were led by a combined school choir, as they joined 700 000 students from around Australia singing 'One Song' for Music Count Us In 2018. What notes have been sent home this week? If you are missing any of these notes, or you need another copy, you will find them in the notes section on the school website.

SCHOOL NEWS
From the Learning Support Team Does your child have difficulty writing? Sitting still? Regulating their emotions? Do they chew on things constantly? Struggle with loud noises and changes to routine? Do they enjoy different sensations and the feel of different surfaces? Do they get angry and have difficulty with their frustration? Do they need help making and keeping friends? Or do they struggle with getting dressed and coping with daily living skills? If these things are beginning to disrupt your child's life, learning and daily functioning, then an Occupational Therapist may be able to help. This week I will go over the role of an Occupational Therapist, specifically relating to children.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES Occupational therapists work with children with any condition, disability or impairment that affects their ability to perform the everyday activities of life, such as getting dressed, eating, going to school, making friends and being part of club or group. This includes:
• Neurological conditions (e.g. cerebral palsy) • Acute medical, surgical and orthopedic conditions • Physical disabilities (e.g. spina bifida) • Developmental delay and disabilities • Sensory and attention issues • Social participation: Interacting positively with others • Occupational Therapists can: • Help children achieve their developmental milestones such as fine motor skills and hand-eye
coordination to help with play, school or independent skills (e.g throwing a ball, getting dressed, holding a pen or utensil)
• Educate and involve parents, carers and others to facilitate the development and learning of children • Help children with developmental delays learn everyday tasks (such as bathing, getting dressed,
brushing their teeth, and feeding themselves) • Help children with behavioural issues and maintain positive behaviours in all environments (e.g., instead
of hitting others or acting out, using positive ways to deal with anger, such as writing about feelings or participating in a physical activity)
These can all have an impact on a child’s social, academic and emotional wellbeing. If you or your child’s
teacher is concerned about your child, it is recommended to:
1) Talk to your child’s teacher
2) To obtain a referral under Medicare speak to your GP.
3) Contact an Occupational Therapist for assessment and therapy.
Occupational therapists work in partnership with the child, their parents and other important people in the child’s life such as their doctor, teacher and other health professionals. How do I know if my child should see an Occupational Therapist or Speech Therapist?

SCHOOL NEWS
It can be a very confusing world, trying to work out the best support for your child. Private services are provided by Occupational Therapists working in a sole practice, with other Occupational Therapists or in multi-disciplinary practices. There is a fee for these services though rebates through Medicare and private health insurance may be available. Usually, you do not need a referral to see an Occupational Therapist. You will need to visit a GP if you need to be assessed for eligibility for Medicare rebates through the Chronic Disease Management program. Fee Assistance
The Chronic Disease Management Plan (formerly called the Enhanced Primary Care Plan) provides Medicare rebates for Allied Health services. You may be eligible to claim a maximum of 5 rebates through Medicare per calendar year for Allied Health services such as speech pathology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy etc. The rebate is $52.95 for each of the 5 sessions. A Chronic Disease Management Plan is for those with chronic medical conditions that are likely to be present for at least 6 months.
Referral for Fee Assistance
Your GP can discuss with you whether your child is eligible for a Chronic Disease Management Plan. If they are eligible the GP will provide you with a referral form for you to bring in to your preferred Occupational Therapist. You will still need to pay for the therapy sessions as usual, but you will be able to take your receipts for up to 5 sessions to Medicare and claim your rebate, or claim through the Medicare app.
Please talk to your GP to find out more about a Chronic Disease Management Plan which provides the reduced Occupational Therapy rate for 5 sessions.
