It is important that students undertaking the HSC examinations are aware of their personal timetable as well as the requirements for each subject. I would like to take this opportunity to wish students the very best for this examination period, and to remind them to keep working and revising, as every mark counts. I would also like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the staff who worked with Year 12 students over the last 12 months getting them ready to do their best. I know many staff have offered their time over the holidays and on weekends to give extra support in the lead up to examinations and practical submissions. Great Barrier Reef Excursion I have just had the pleasure of taking a group of our Year 11 students to the Great Barrier Reef for seven days. Our students were an absolute credit to themselves and the school, and had a fantastic time. Many thanks to Mrs McCormack who also came and supported the students on the excursion, and to Mr Mark White from Goulburn High School, who organised the overall excursion and allowed us to attend as a combined school group. Thank you also to Mrs Peters and Mr Hewitt who relieved as Principal and Deputy Principal last week. STEM Showcase This Wednesday, our Uplands Community of Public Schools STEM project reaches its conclusion, with the Showcase event involving students from each of our public schools. This event allows students to display their STEM related project and talk about the solution of the problem they were working on. The purpose of this project is to have students working collaboratively to creatively solve a real world problem, with emphasis on how they cooperate and then communicate their solution. These are the skills that students need to be successful in our modern world, in addition to the specific subject based knowledge they gain whilst in class. Thank you to all the staff, led by Mrs Ingrid Clements, both at Crookwell High School and in our partner primary schools, for the huge effort they have put in to make this happen two years in a row. I am very proud of how our students have engaged with the project and gained so many new skills along the way. Breakfast Program A massive thank you to Miss Romer and the staff from Crookwell High School who assist her in running our Breakfast Program. STEM Immersion DayOver the last few weeks our Year 7 STEM students have been working hard finalising their projects in readiness for the STEM Showcase on Wednesday 23rd October 2019. This year the task was to design, construct and market a device that is powered by renewable energy. Students were lucky enough to have help from visiting engineers and marketing experts who volunteered their time and expertise as part of the SISP (STEM and Industry Schools Partnership) program. Excursions to the wind farm and the Woodlawn bioreactor also helped students deepen their learning and make connections between what they are doing at school and possible career paths in the future. Once again we have been working with staff and students from Crookwell, Laggan, Binda, Taralga and Bigga Public Schools with the Year 8 students acting as mentors to the younger students. Please feel free to come along to the Showcase on Wednesday between 10:00am and 12:00pm in the school hall and see the innovative ideas presented by the clever students in our local community of schools.Felicity AbbeyHead Teacher Science

Deputy’s ReportSCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Under the Education Act 1990 it is the duty of the parents or care-provider to see that their student attends school on each day that instruction is provided. It is expected that the parent or care-provider explains all absences by note the first day the student returns to school. Students are to place their absence notes in the green box outside the Deputy’s office. Leave during School Hours

a) Time-Off from School: For reasons such as family appointments, where leave for part of a day is desired. Students must bring a note to explain the partial absence in the morning. This note is placed in the green box outside the Deputy’s office. This will allow for an early leavers slip to be processed and be ready to collect at the time the student is leaving.

b) Medical/Dental Appointments: Students who have to take time off from school for dental and medical treatment should bring a note before the event, stating appointment times. This note is to be placed in the Green Box and will be processed by the Deputy and office staff.

c) In General: If a student is required by a parent to leave the school grounds in school hours, a note must be brought from the parents or guardians. All such notes should be placed in the green box before 8:55am on the relevant day. Students will be issued with a School Leave Pass by the Office staff and are required to sign the attendance book when they leave and when they return.

Reasons for LeaveAs stated in the Education Act parents or guardians must explain why a student is absent. This means the note must state whether a student is sick, whether an appointment is a medical, dental or family or any other specific reason for an absence.

Year 12 Graduation

At the end of Term 3, I said my final farewell to my Year 12 group at Crookwell High School. It has been an absolute pleasure to see them grow up and it’s been a privilege to be a part of their schooling over the past six years. They are the most caring, creative, sporting and academic group of students I know. They made me very proud as their Year Adviser and I’m sure their parents as well. All the best on your future journey through life.Remember ‘Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better it’s not!’ Dr Seuss

Year 11 Great Barrier ReefMrs Rebecca McCormack - Year 11 Advisor

Last week Mr Joseph, myself and four Goulburn High School teachers were very fortunate to participate in an excursion to North Queensland with many of our Year 11 students. The excursion to the Great Barrier Reef was organised by Goulburn High School teacher, Mr Mark White, who has been successfully running the excursion for about eight years for their Year 11 students. The Crookwell High School contingent was extremely grateful to participate this year in this fabulous experience.

The trip was a fantastic educational opportunity in terms of learning a depth of knowledge about the history of the Indigenous peoples of the area and the struggles they have faced in the past and the positive movements that are now happening to ensure the survival of this ancient culture and their languages.

We were truly lucky to find ourselves sleeping overnight in accommodation in the world’s oldest rainforest, the Daintree, where we learnt about the ecosystem and amazing biological adaptations that many rainforest plants have made to survive in such an environment.

The Year 11 students and the teachers had two amazing snorkelling experiences, one at Fitzroy Island with the turtles and another day out on the outer reef, where the conditions were fabulous and the reef was teeming with colour and life.

We had so much fun wakeboarding, ziplining and visiting around the shopping centre in Cairns. The students mixed with the Goulburn High students and we made new friends.

Mr Joseph and myself were approached on a number of occasions by members of the public, locals and holiday makers, who “just wanted to tell us what a beautiful bunch of kids” the group was. And, considering there were 50 teenagers in our group, we thought that was very special.

The students were also able to experience life away from the family home, independence in a controlled environment and resilience.

Overall, it was a great week.

14-10-2109 Dear Parent/Caregiver of ALL Year 8 students, Regional Development Australia Southern Inland (RDA Southern Inland) has been a part of the STEM Industry School Partnership Program (SISP) since 2018, funded by the NSW Department of Education. The program provides students in years 5 to 8 in each region with age appropriate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) skills and pathways to STEM jobs.

In 2019, we have continued our partnership with Crookwell High School, its feeder schools and the Renewable Energy sector, whilst expanding to Mulwaree High School and its feeder schools.

This Project sees RDAs, industry and schools working together to focus the narrative for primary and secondary students on how STEM skills and knowledge can solve real world problems. It introduces primary and secondary students in Crookwell and Goulburn to STEM opportunities in this booming Renewable Energy sector in the Southern Inland.

For two terms, students have worked in small groups to design and construct a device or product that enhances the use of renewable energy. Students have had access to STEM equipment, including solar panels, solar cars and wind turbines to demonstrate their solution.

As part of this project, industry representatives have visited the classroom and assisted students with the projects, as well as hosted the students onsite. Industry partners this year include, Crookwell 2 Wind Farm, Gullen Range Wind and Solar Farm, GoTerra, Veolia’s Woodlawn Bioreactor and Pearsons Engineering.

For the Upper Lachlan Region, the project will culminate in a STEM Showcase Day hosted by Crookwell High School, where students can present their projects to their peers, parents and community members.

On behalf of Crookwell High School, RDA Southern Inland would like to invite you to this event on Wednesday 23rd October from 10am-12pm at the Crookwell High School Hall.

10am – 11am : Projects on display to the Public

11am – 12pm : Presentation of Awards

It will be an opportunity for you to hear about the wonderful and innovative work the students have participated in throughout the year.

Kind Regards Ingrid Clements SISP Project Officer 0428352285 [email protected]
