Term 4 7th November 2018 Learning for the future STRIKE Action On Tuesday 13 th November, teachers will once again strike to see if we can get our government to value teachers and the resources they need to ensure your child/ren get the best possible education they deserve. We honestly would not be doing this unless we truly believed in what is needed. Teachers have so much to achieve at this time of the year and it is also a short term, so every day in the classroom is valued. But things cannot carry on as they are. The Kamo Primary School Board of Trustees approves the school not being open for the school day of 13 th November. The Kamo KidZone Programme service will be available for customers. Once again we do hope our government is listening, as I hear from our teachers and teachers across the country that we will continue to strike if needs are not met. Swimming The pool is back in action and full credit goes to Mr Gow! Swimming is a part of the curriculum and not optional unless your child has medical reasons and a note must be supplied. Please ensure swimming gear is named and in a bag that supports wet gear. This is essential, as books being transported in a school bag become mildew spoiled from the damp swimming gear. Swimming terms see a loss in library books due to the damp and this could be avoided. Art Students completed some wonderful Art, which was to be sold early last term. However, due to the delay with the deck, we had to postpone the sale. The art will be displayed in your child/ren’s room on Wednesday 7 th and Thursday 8 th November from 3pm onwards for one hour. Your child will have already or is about to place a photo of it on SeeSaw. All pictures are framed and are at a set price of $10.00 each. They would make wonderful Christmas presents! If you cannot make it in on these dates but wish to purchase the art from viewing it on SeeSaw, payment can be made to: 12 3093 0152225 00 Reference: Art. You can also purchase the art by paying cash at the office. Property Room 3 now has the new glass doors and deck complete and they look great! Soon the shade cover over Rimu block is to commence. We are all proud of how great the school is looking! It’s time to share some news around retirement… At the end of this year, Mrs Elaine Soich will retire from full time teaching. Many students at Kamo Primary have had the privilege of knowing this happy, warm and wonderful teacher! She will be a great loss but has promised to do some relieving for us and we will hold her to that! As well, Mrs Margaret Heape, who has been the Finance Officer for twenty-eight years, is also retiring. Yet another loss to the school, but both these amazing women have things to do. They list travel and fun as a priority and with their great natures we know it will happen!

STRIKE Action On Tuesday 13th November, teachers will once again strike to see if we can get our government to value teachers and the resources they need to ensure your child/ren get the best possible education they deserve. We honestly would not be doing this unless we truly believed in what is needed. Next Year Over the summer break we will upgrade our website with the aim of it to be far more interactive and informative in sharing information with you. We will be making you aware when it is in operation.

Gaming and Video Concerns It is alarming to hear students talk about the games and videos they watch and play. One teacher got proactive and contacted Sashi Chovhan | Senior Investigator | Digital Safety Department of Internal Affairs | Te Tari Taiwhenua. And here is her response… “Anybody who knowingly supplies, distributes, exhibits or displays a restricted publication to any person who does not meet the age criteria is committing an offence. A restricted publication is objectionable if made available to a person underage, and an individual can receive up to three months imprisonment or a fine not exceeding $10,000. Examples of offences that could occur - This would include (but is not restricted to): a video outlet renting a restricted DVD to an underage youth; or a parent supplying an R18 computer game to underage children It would seem from your comments that either the parents are knowingly purchasing and supplying restricted titles to their children or the games are being played without the parent’s knowledge. Please contact me if you have any concerns about a store supplying minors directly with age restricted or any particular parent allowing or supplying their children with age restricted content.”

Please give thought to this matter.

The Bush by Don Berridge“What do you think you’re doing?” Anthony yelled.“I’m running with the gun, what do you think?” Don shouted back at his father.“Well keep it down otherwise you’re going to scare the pigs!” hissed Anthony. “And that gun better not be loaded!”

Suddenly, Don fell over and his mighty 223 rifle exploded sending a bullet directly into Dons right shoulder. Don screamed in pain sending Neo the pig dog into fits of barking. Anthony watched as his son dropped in pain. Rushing to help, he quickly rang 111 who told him to find a clearing in the bush ready for the helicopter to land.

Luckily there was a clearing close by. For 20 minutes Neo lay on the legs of his owner while they waited and waited. Finally the 3 hunters were relieved to hear the familiar sound of a helicopter’s engine. Ten minutes later, Don was in theatre having surgery, not knowing if he would survive or not.

Two days later, surrounded by close friends and family, Don opened his eyes for the first time. “Did we get the pig Dad?” he asked sleepily.“ No, sorry son, we didn’t. But we still have you, and that’s all that matters”.

Grandads Flood by Kade Gillespie.“Kade, wake up! The farm is flooding!” yelled Grandad. Before I could say something, Grandad dragged me out of my bed. “Quick, put some clothes on!”

I furiously put my clothes on and pounced into the tractor. We drove down the race to get the cows.“s word” said Grandad “f word.” The cows were gone.Grandad went in the paddock. “Oh s word” Grandad yelled. The tractor had broken down. “I will go to get help,” said Grandad, “you stay here.”“Ok” I replied.

Grandad had been gone for ages. What if he had been pushed under by a cow? After a while, I decided to go look for him. Water had filled my gumboots when all of a sudden I fell under. When I swam up, all I could see was a watery dessert.

In the distance, I could see the outline of a dog swimming towards me. Am I dead I thought? Then I recognised the dog, it was Chief. He grabbed me by the sleeve of my shirt and pulled me to a hill. I could see Grandad on the hill with the cows. We were going to be all right after all.
