Principal’s Bulletin 20th August 2021

Learning from Home

We find ourselves again working and learning from home, and hope that

we will be able to return to full time face to face learning soon. This week

we will start calling home to check in with families about their access to

learning from home, and to see how the school can support students in

getting the most out of this situation. Phone calls may come up as Private

Number as staff may be using their own phones, so please answer those

calls if possible. Staff will also be asking permission for students to be

contacted directly, and the best number to do this. They will also ask to

speak to students to check on any specific learning needs they may have.

All students have access to Google Classroom, with codes sent out to all

students last week. We are trying to follow our normal timetable for any

scheduled Zoom lessons, and ask students to try to do work as per their

timetable where possible.

We are currently looking at how Year 11 exams/assessments will take

place, as well as the status of other assessment tasks in other year groups.

Information about this will be shared through the Google Classroom with

students.

Students who cannot access technology have photocopied work packs

available. Please contact our office if these are required. The work for the

next week should be available late on Monday 23rd August.

The wellbeing of our students and families is very important. Working on

school work at home plus all the other complications families are dealing

with due to COVID is putting a lot of pressure on our students and families.

All students have a code for PROSPER lessons through Google Classroom,

based around providing links and information to support their physical and

mental health. This is useful for the whole family and should be accessed

regularly. Please do not hesitate to contact the school for support with any

wellbeing issue.

I am very appreciative of the very quick response by staff to this situation,

and the support our families and community have shown. The care and

professionalism in our staff, and the place we hold in our community,

makes these situations far more manageable. Most of our staff are

working from home, with a very limited number of staff at school.

HSIE NEWS

Hold the front page! Breaking news…

HSIE and PDHPE have been as busy as ever, delivering valuable learning opportunities as well as encouraging students to

prosper by keeping fit and improving their mental faculties! Since our last newsletter item, the faculty was privileged to

host two excellent student teachers, Miss Katelyn Hunter and Miss Poppy Perry. Our students welcomed them

enthusiastically and appreciated the had work the ladies put into the lessons. We look forward to seeing them in the future

as fully fledged HSIE teachers!

The start of term 3 saw our junior students switching HSIE subjects from Geography to History or vice versa. Year 7 began

their inquiry of Geography where they will be learning about Landforms and Landscapes. Year 8 began their inquiry into

Medieval history, covering Medieval Europe, The Black Death and eventually Shogunate Japan. Years 9 and 10 have also

switched subjects and teachers to complete their mandatory hours.

Commerce students completed the core topics of Law, society and political involvement and Work and employment

opportunities, the 9/10 commerce class have begun the first of 3 option topics. We have begun an enthusiastic inquiry into

travel. In this topic students learn about reasons for travel, destinations, legal requirements, documentation and travel

advice. Students will then comprehensively plan a trip as an assessment task later in the term.

In addition, our year 12 students have completed their Trials and now we can see the finish line. We’d like to remind them

that the momentum needs to be maintained!

On matters sporting, all junior PDHPE are currently doing a self -reflection assessment task on how well they perform in

practical lessons. Based on effort, being in correct uniform, how well they encourage others and how well they execute

skills and tactics for the sports they are doing. Giving the kids deeper understanding of what is required to achieve well in

PDHPE with a marking rubric to refer to. Year 9 PASS are doing Fitness tests and designing training programs to improve

fitness. 11PDHPE have started studying Outdoor Recreation to learn more about why people choose to do outdoor

activities, how to select a campsite, how to navigate, planning for multi day events. They are close to completing the Prelim

course and are positioned well to achieve in the HSC year.

And finally, our ‘honorary’ member of the faculty, Mr Steven Dunn, has begun what is turning out to be a highly

competitive in-school dodgeball competition. Different teams are duelling it out in the hall every lunchtime, in the quest

for the title!!! Thank you, Mr Dunn, for your enthusiastic contribution to the faculty.

Relieving Head Teacher HSIE/PDHPE

We are trying our hardest to respond to questions and work requests with very limited staff on site. Our office staff have

been outstanding in supporting teaching staff and students by creating the pathways for learning to take place.

Music

Talent abounds in Year 10 Elective Music with many students being multi -instrumentalists. During practical lessons

students work enthusiastically on their individual parts, perfecting performance arrangements. We are currently working

on the Aussie classic “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXIS as well as a range of contemporary compositions.

Our Year 9 Elective Music Class spend their practical lessons learning how to advance their listening and performance

skills. They are working well as individuals and as future band members. Well done Year 9 we can ’t wait to hear your

performance work.

Year 8 Agriculture

Year 8 Agriculture class had the opportunity to dig their own potatoes at the school farm. At the end of the session,

students had the opportunity to make up their own 2kg bags of potatoes to take home and enjoy!

Year 7 Geography

Year 7 Geography students have been learning about landscapes and landforms this term. Today, they looked at the val-

ue of landscapes for Aboriginal people. We looked at Dreamtime stories and the students were given an opportunity to

be creative and illustrate the stories. A nice, fun way to learn about the importance of the land.
