Term 3, Week 5 - Tuesday 20 August 2019
Past Parkes Public School students return for a
50 year reunion
On Saturday, a group of 20 past students returned to Parkes Public School for a 50 year school reunion. They had contacted the school and requested a tour of their old classrooms and grounds. They were all very excited to be back at Parkes Public and shared some happy memories of their days here.
Mrs Barry’s classroom was their Kindergarten room 70 years ago and the Special Education kitchen area was the school hall.
When they were at our school, the Infants side was co-ed. However, when you went to year 3 across the road, the school was split into a boys’ side and a girls’ side. The boys’ classrooms were in Bushman building along with the office block. The girls’ classrooms were in Pioneer block. The playground was split in half and boys were not allowed to play with girls.
The men remembered playing cricket near the Primary canteen.
They shared stories about using the Currajong tree next to the
canteen as the cricket wicket. The canteen was not there then.
They all had many fond memories of their teachers and days
spent at Parkes Public School.
Save the Date Friday 20 September
The P&C is hosting a free

Parkes Public School on

are excited to announce that

Parkes Show
Next Tuesday, 27 August is a half day holiday for the Parkes Show. Please note that your children will
need to be collected from the school at 12 noon. Also, the newsletter will be sent home on Wednesday,
28 August for that week.
Canberra Excursion
Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the
national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of
the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament
and Civics Education Rebate Program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon
completion of the excursion.
NSW Hockey
Congratulations to our NSW hockey representatives, Flynn
Thompson and Joel MacGregor, who are playing in the Nationals
tournament in Bendigo, Victoria. We are extremely proud of them
and wish them the best of luck in their quest for gold. It is such an
honour for our school to have two representatives playing at this
high level.

Changes to ‘Out of School Hours Care’ at Parkes Public School
The current provider for the Out of Hours School Care at our school will be finishing
on 30 August 2019. The Department has secured a new provider, the Parkes PCYC,
and they are currently working through the application process to conduct the service
in our school. Although this will cause a gap in the service at the school while we wait
for the lease application to be approved, we have been working with the Department and the PCYC to put
a plan in place so that our children who attend the Out of Hours Care program, still have care available to
them in the afternoons.
For the short term, the children will need to catch the Town 4 bus from our school to the PCYC. The PCYC
staff will be at the bus stop (at the PCYC) to meet the children and get them off the bus. Parents will then
need to pick their children up from the PCYC.
Please call Karen at Western Road Liners to make sure that your child is registered to travel on a school
bus. Their contact number is 6862 1022.
Information packs regarding the service that the PCYC will be running at our school are available from the
front office.
We apologise for this disruption to the Out of Hours Care service and thank you for your understanding.
The aim is to have the service back at school by the beginning of Term 4.
Enjoy your week.
