Term 3 Week 5 August 19, 2019 www.stjohnsprimarydubbo.catholic.edu.au From the Principal’s desk…. Welcome to Week 5. Last week we had a very reverent and special Mass with St Pius X Primary School for the Feast of the Assumption Mary Mass. A special note of thanks to all of the children who sang in the choir and also to Mrs Clifford for her organisation with St Pius X. We are over the halfway point of term and students are striving to do their best by focusing on their ‘skills for learning.’ One of the successful themes from our Second Step programs is skills for learning. We’ll be reminding students to listen, focus their attention, and use self-talk to stay on task, and to be assertive when asking for help with learning. These skills will help every student be a successful learner. This is a very special week for many of our Year 3 students who will be receiving the sacrament of First Holy Communion this weekend. The word 'communion' means to be united with; Catholics believe that in Holy Communion we are united in a special way with Jesus Christ. At his last supper, Jesus said of the bread that he shared among his followers, "Take and eat, this is my body." When we receive Holy Communion, Catholics believe that in a mysterious way we are sharing in the body and blood of Christ. I am sure this special day will be one that the entire family will celebrate. I can still recall my First Holy Communion at St Pius X Chapel and how it was such a happy family day. We pray for Year 3 and their families. Pope Francis said, "The Eucharist is such a great gift. That's why going to Mass is so important. Going to Mass not just to pray, but to receive Communion, the Bread and Body of Christ. It saves us, forgives us and it makes us one with the Father. How beautiful! Our Coffee and Chat meeting is getting closer: The next P&F meeting will be a special meeting that will be a ‘Coffee and a Chat’ meeting. The focus on the conversation will be on the 50th Birthday celebrations of SJP and we, the school and P&F, are very keen to hear your ideas for this celebration and any other ideas you may have. The catch up will take place on the pavers at the entrance of the school on Tuesday August 27th at 2.15pm –3.15pm. We look forward to seeing you for a free cuppa and a chat. Keep the date in your diary. All Wel- come. I would like to bring your attention to the following book, ‘Dear Pope Francis - The Pope Answers Letters from Children Around the World.’ This is a delightful book from our Leader who continues to inspire all of mankind to live justly and act humbly with our God. Gospel and Reflection: Luke 12:49-53 - Not Peace but Division “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

But I

have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! Do you

think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will

be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.

They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against

daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” ‘I have come to cast fire on the earth, how I wish it were blazing already!’

Celebrated composer Christopher Willcock SJ’s uplifting commissioning hymn ‘Whence Comes This Fire?’ takes as its chorus the opening line from today’s Gospel: ‘I have come to cast fire on the earth, how I wish it were blazing already!’

The lyrics of the first two verses embed the title question in scriptural references: ‘whence comes this fire in the land of Judea? whence comes this fire in the sky in the East?’ In verse two we ask ‘whence comes this fire?’ on the roads to Emmaus and Damascus, places of life-changing encounters with the risen Christ.

A repeated question ‘whence comes this fire which preserves life in us?’ ends both the second and fourth verses, giving us pause to consider the sustaining fire at the heart of our lives: God’s Holy Spirit. It is a beautiful hymn making us aware of Jesus’ desire that his fire ‘take hold of our hearts’.
