Teaching and Learning Tales - Hannah Watt 2W Ms Hannah Watt is a teacher with a big heart and big plans to ensure all the children she teaches have access to a quality education. “Education ensures individuals can have access to the basics of a good life. Knowledge of your own capabilities is powerful. I want all my students to know what they are capable of, and to have a bright future,” she said. Ms Watt’s passionate appreciation for education stems from her childhood. She can remember racing to the mini chalkboard behind her parent’s cafe in the tiny town of Barmedman to teach her younger sister what she had learnt at her 1 principal, 1 teacher, 30 student primary school that day. “I always wanted to be a teacher. I loved learning at a small primary school. It was a nice experience to have only 3 students in your year.” Ms Watt completed high school at West Wyalong, which exposed her to the advantages of a larger school. “Moving from such a small cohort into one that had 60 students in it was a significant shift for me and prepared me well for university.” Ms Watt was contemplating pursuing a career in social work, however, the allure of her first love of education proved successful. She completed her Bachelor of Education at CSU in Wagga Wagga. “When I graduated I stayed in Wagga Wagga and taught Year 3/4 for 2 years and 5/6 for 2 years. I also did work as a Maths Interventionist Teacher, while completing the first 2 years of my Psychology degree.” Whilst Wagga Wagga was a great place to cut her professional teaching teeth, Ms Watt soon grew restless and decided she wanted to combine her love of her learning about the world, with her love of learning so she ventured abroad to teach in Chelsea in England. “It was a wonderful opportunity to travel all around Europe and continue to grow my professional expertise.” When Ms Watt returned to Australia it wasn’t long before she was looking for a new teaching adventure and decided to join her sister in Dubbo. She commenced work at Dubbo South Public School in 2018, where she has been teaching Stage 1. Ms Watt believes children are the best part of being a teacher. She loves the little moments in class when students reveal their sense of humour, innocence and brutal honesty. “I love my students’ curiosity. I am passionate to share my love of science and history, as well as knowledge of Maths

and English, to help them make sense of their world.” “It is wonderful to see their intrigue turn into ‘I get it now moments’.” After just a few moments in Ms Watts class it is obvious the hard work she is investing in crafting a culture of wonder, laughter and pursuit of knowledge is supporting all the learners in her care to thrive. Students voices Angus Hourn, 8 years – “Ms Watt teaches maths very well. She has helped me learn my times tables.” Marly Ryan, 8 years – “Ms Watt helps me with my writing.” Zach Pengilley, 8 years – “Ms Watt gives us hard maths for our level, but always makes it fun. We made our own clocks.” Aurko Choudhury, 8 years – “Ms Watt is nice and helps me organise my learning tools.” Alex Farley, 7 years – “Learning is always fun in Ms Watt’s class.” Jorja Edwards, 7 years – “Ms Watt gets my brain working.”

ICaN Mentoring Leadership Program. Just an update for our parents, ICaN Stage 2 Cultural Excursion with Uncle Ralph has been postponed from Wednesday 29th July to next Tuesday, 4th August. ICaN Stage 3 Cultural Excursion has also been postponed from Thursday 30th July to next Friday 7th August. This is due to the large amount of rain out at Balladoran. Both our Stage 2 and 3 groups have made a positive start to Term 3 and have been getting stuck into some boxing training in Weeks 1 and 2. Students have been learning boxing fundamentals, drills and exercises. Boxing is a great way to learn discipline and respect and so far we are happy with how the boys are progressing. These sessions will continue throughout Term 3. A special shout out to our Stage 2 student of the week Barry Flood, and our Stage 3 student of the week Simon Morgan. Both these students have engaged well in our sessions, followed school PBL rules and ICaN rules which are respect, manners, attitude and good vibes. Congratulations boys. We look forward to another busy week with the boys. Thank you. Nathan Riley
