Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to week 10! Congratulations students on a great term of learning. This week has
been as busy as ever completing assessments, projects, excursions and fundraisers. We are
always immensely proud of how our students and community support our fundraisers and thank
you all. We wish you all a safe and happy holiday break and will see you next term.
Please remember families, every day counts! Going to school is a legal requirement. Under the
law, you must make sure your child is enrolled and attends school on ALL school days unless
you have a reasonable excuse. You must not keep your child away from school for minor rea-
sons. Student attendance this week was 88%.
Would you please note if your child will be absent from school, we would appreciate you con-
tacting the office by 9.30 a.m. so that we can record their absence.

Be Patient
Do encourage your child to guess what the story is about.
Do praise your child when an idea or word is used that you know will come up in the
story.
Do ask questions like; “What can you tell about the story from the picture?”
“What do you think will happen in the story?”
Do mention things like; The person who wrote the story—the author
The person who did the illustrations—the illustrator.
Do make sure that whatever your child reads is a complete
story, chapter or thought.

Visual Arts…
Our visual arts students continue
their exploration into Pop Art this
term and have been conducting por-
traits of themselves and each other.
Pop Art began in the 1950’s as a
reaction to the seriousness of Ab-
stract Expressionist Art. It is meant
to be fun, colourful and brash. Each
week we challenge you to guess
which student these Pop Portraits
belong to.
Answer last week: Charlotte Ward and Joshua Jackson
Positive Behaviour Learning…
Each week we have a Positive Behaviour Learning focus at Mt Larcom State School. These topics
are to assist us in building positive behaviours for staff and students and promote team work in
working towards a common goal. This weeks continued focus is Rubbish and Respectful language.
Which rule does using our rubbish
bin correctly fit under?
Be respectful
Be responsible.
Items that can be recycled.

Library News... Its wonderful to see students borrowing books each week. From Jackie French books to reading about the
Titanic, then siting in the bean chairs, so engrossed, you could hear a pin drop. Enjoy your reading during the
holidays.
"Libraries allow children to ask questions about the world and find the
answers. And the wonderful thing is that once a child learns to use a
library, the doors to learning are always open".
Laura Bush
Year 7 Arts...
The Year 7s have been studying Media Arts this term and have learnt all about photography and camera
work. In groups, students have produced a storyboard and written a synopsis for a short documentary film
that they are in the process of filming and editing. The main focus of their film is THEM! They get to film, nar-
rate, star in and produce their own short film that will be presented to the class as a part of Film Week at the
beginning of next term. I have been most impressed with the creativity and enthusiasm from the Year 7s dur-
ing the completion of this task and look forward to watching their final films!

P-3 Poetry with Mrs Porch…
This term our Primary students have been focusing on poetry. After listening to some poetry readings, they
performed their pieces to Mrs Porch for which they received special awards. Well done P-3 on your outstand-
ing efforts, keep up the good work!
I like myself the way I am.
I like myself the way I am.
I’m really glad I’m me.
In fact, I’m sure there’s no one else
on earth I’d rather be.
I’d rather not be someone else,
I wouldn’t want to switch,
unless they were more beautiful,
or powerful, or rich.
I only want to be myself.
To change would just be wrong,
except if they were super smart,
or muscular and strong.
Unless they were more talented,
or glamorous, or tall,
or popular, or interesting,
I’d never change at all.
Except if they were famous or
had won the lottery,
I’d like to stay the way I am.
I’m glad to just be me.

Nurse News
As some of you may have heard by now, I (Vanessa, the School Based
Youth Health Nurse), am leaving Mt Larcom State School.
I finish up this week, end of Term 3. It is time for my family and I to
head down to the Gold Coast and settle in to life down there.
It has been a great ‘almost’ two years at Mt Larcom as the SBYHN. I
have enjoyed working alongside some really awesome staff and it has been fantastic getting
to know all the students.
Your new SBYHN at Mt Larcom will hopefully start the beginning of Term 4. I am not sure
who this person is yet, but please feel free to introduce yourself!!!
If you’re still not sure what they School Nurse does at Mt Larcom, here is some handy info:
So what does a SBYHN do at school?
- The SBYHN program offers one on one health consults with students - Advice and support with health care needs - Work with teachers at school, sometimes providing health education in the
classroom - Identify health concerns and refer on to community support if required - Promote health and wellbeing around the school
What would you see the SBYHN for?
- If you are feeling sad, worried or stressed
- Advice around healthy relationships and family issues
- Talk about nutrition, exercise and healthy lifestyles
- Advice/education in regards to alcohol and smoking
- Growth and Development
Parents/Guardians are also more than welcome to contact the School Based Youth Health
Nurse to discuss their child/ren and any health concerns they may have. You can contact the

Energy Monitors Report…
Throughout the Term our Energy Monitors have been conducting weekly checks of our buildings and class-
rooms to ensure that we are doing our part to conserve energy. Rooms are inspected for lights, fans and air-
conditioning and rated on the requirement for their use. This week the Office staff were given a big thumbs
up from our Energy Monitor, Rhys, however, some Teachers have some room for improvement. Thank you
students for keeping us accountable.
