SRC Induction

Next Friday, 2nd August, we will have our SRC induction ceremony at the assembly. All our Semester 2 representatives received notes this week. Our Semester 1 SRC Representatives have done an outstanding job in Terms 1 and 2, with a focus on developing the criteria for what it means to be a good Wilberforce Citizen and Learner. The Semester 2 Reps will continue implementing this across the school.

The Choir Perform at the Richmond Retirement Home

In week 10 last term our Choir, led by Mrs Ahmedi, performed for the residents at the Hawkesbury Living Retirement Home. It was wonderful for our students to give back to the local community.

Congratulations to our Public Speakers.

In week 10 last term some of our best Public Speakers competed in the Multicultural Public Speaking Finals. Claire T, Mackenzie K and Stephanie A were up against the best public speakers from across Western Sydney. Congratulations to all our students for making the finals and to Makenzie K who won the area division. She will go on to represent our school at the regional finals at Lewisham Public School.

Recorder Group at the Opera House

Our recorder group will perform at the Opera House next week as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music. We wish them good luck!

Kindergarten 2020 – Have You Enrolled?

To enable us to plan for next year, we would like you to contact us as soon as possible if you have a child enrolling in 2020. Kindergarten enrolments affect our whole school structures and the closer we are to knowing how many students are enrolling the better prepared we can be to create a solid plan for all students from Years Kindergarten through to Year 6 moving into 2020.

Thank you

Graham Wilkins

STAGE NEWS

Early Stage 1

Welcome back to Term 3! This term we will become more independent in our reading now that we recognise most of our sight words. We will continue to use decoding skills like blending to work out unknown words. In writing, we will learn to write using structure and make sure we use quality sentences. We will start to look at imaginative texts and how to write a story. In Mathematics, we are looking at addition and subtraction patterns like friends to ten to help us solve some number sentences. Our science unit this term will focus on living things, and will be supported by our first excursion – to the Zoo! We will also be able to watch the life cycle of a butterfly first hand. This term we will start a geography unit about mapping and look at some local places. In PDHPE we will look at the fundamental skills of underarm throw, hop and skip, and we will participate in the school’s gymnastic program each Tuesday. We will use the art skills we have learnt in the first semester to create mixed media artworks and some sculptures. We will also utilise skills learnt in semester one to dance to some Aboriginal music, and we will start to learn how to play the recorder! What a fun term we will have!

Stage 1

Stage one are looking forward to another exciting term of learning. We will be learning how to write information reports; learning about natural, constructed and managed features through our Geography unit ‘Features of Places’; trying our hands at a variety of Australian themed artwork during our Visual Arts lessons and are thoroughly looking forward to our Athletics Carnival and Gymnastics lessons this term! Another jam-packed term of fun and engaging learning experiences.

Stage 2

Stage 2 will be exploring the novel ‘Storm Boy’ this term in literacy. Our HSIE, Geography and Creative Arts units will also be based around the theme of ‘My Place’ and explore the cultural heritage of Aboriginal Australia. Our Science unit is literally ‘Too Hot to Handle’ and will explore how temperature changes the chemical composition of materials. In PD/H/PE we will be doing child protection and the unit Tackling Bullying.

Stage 3

Welcome back to Term 3, for Stage 3. We will be studying North America, Europe and their connection to Australia in Geography. We will be exploring the countries in these regions and study some of their traditional cultures, geographic features and natural resources. The students will be working on a project, with most of this being completed at school. If you have any posters, travel brochures or items that represent these countries, they would be greatly appreciated for classroom use, and be well looked after.

This term is starting off as a big sporting term. We wish the students success in the field event and athletics carnival during week 1. On Friday, 9th August, many Stage 3 students will be participating in the Milo Cup Cricket Gala Day. Gymnastics lesson will be on Tuesdays for Stage 3 and we hope they all participate and enjoy the challenges of this program.

Page 5: TERM 3, WEEK 1 Wilberforce Public School NEWSLETTER · will look at the fundamental skills of underarm throw, hop and skip, and we will participate in the school’s gymnastic program

In Science, the students will be studying the topic, ‘Light’. The students will conduct experiments and investigate what light is and what are some its sources. In Art, we will be studying colour and tone.

This term, the students will be completing the Child Protection Program for the first five weeks. This is a compulsory unit of work for all students, to understand relationships and protective strategies and networks they can develop to keep them safe.

Well done to all Stage 3 students for their great efforts in running the Peer Support Program, last term. They confidently organised and taught the lesson to the younger students of the school. Great job!

Thank you to all the students who participated in our annual Year 6 fundraising theme day. Everyone looked great in their disco fever clothes. We raised $1,300-00 to contribute to the Year 6 gift for the school.

Rehearsal for the Festival of Instrumental Music

On Tuesday 25th June, Mrs Chapple, Mrs Domars and nine of our recorder students travelled into the city for their rehearsal for the Festival of Instrumental Music. The students joined with three hundred other students from around NSW for the rehearsal. It was a wonderful experience for our students to be a part of. Our students played so well throughout the long rehearsal and Mrs Chapple and Mrs Domars were very proud of them. Our performance at the Festival of Instrumental Music at the Opera House is on Tuesday 30th July. We are looking forward to the opportunity to be able to perform at the Opera House!

How far can 5c go?

Our fundraiser for One Step One Life is on again. The charity, One Step One Life, provides funds to students in Cambodia to give them access to education at school or university. More information can be found at www.1step1life.org/what-we-do. We are asking Wilberforce students and families to put aside 5 cent coins to donate to the charity. On Friday 23 August, the coins will be placed in lines to see which class can make the longest line.

Start saving your 5 cent coins in readiness.
