Principal’s UpdateDear Parents and Caregivers, On Tuesday of last week I attend-ed the Minister’s and Secretary’s Awards for Excellence at the Sydney Town Hall. Andria Zanotto was one of only 37 students in NSW presented with a Minister’s award for Excellence in Student Achievement. This is an outstand-ing accolade for Andria and I’m sure our whole school community joins with me in congratulating her. It is a just reward for her years of dedication to her studies.

Congratulations Andria.

Our school also received an award in the Secretary’s Awards for an Outstanding School Initiative. The STEM Industry School Partnership (SISP) program was recognised as one of 15 outstanding programs in NSW. SISP uses local industry expertise to provide authentic learning contexts to engage schools to maximise the benefits of integrated STEM education.

The coordinator of this program at Murrumbidgee Regional High School is Mr Ian Pres-ton who is at the cutting edge of STEM education in Australia and worldwide.

One Minister’s award, one Secretary’s award. A great week for Murrumbidgee Regional High School.

Mathematics ReportBefore MRHS prepares for the excitement of our new build, the Mathematics rooms at both sites have under-gone a makeover. Mathematics students have been lucky enough to use the beautifully refurbished rooms and are enjoying the new colour scheme which is a precursor of what is in store for the rest of Murrumbidgee Regional High School. Lots of exciting learning is happening at the Wade and Griffith sites this term:

JuniorsYear 7 at both sites have had an introduction to the ever-infamous Algebra and staff have really enjoyed the challenge of turning the students’ uncertainties into a keen interest.

Griffith site’s Year 8 students have started working on Perimeter and Area, with Mrs McGreal’s class doing an investigation to discover that shapes with the same pe-rimeter can have different areas .

Data is the next topic for Year 9 at the Wade site, and Mrs Tregea’s class did an interesting experiment to collect some data of their own on distances on our faces (pictured). The Greeks were fascinated by the transcendental number of Phi - approximately 1.618. They used the ratio to build the Parthenon and the drawing of Vitruvian man as it was very pleasing to the eye and reported to be the perfect

number. The class took several measurements of lengths (e.g. from the top of the head to the chin) to calculate ratios and then found the mean (average) per student and as a class. We had two students who have faces that produced the number 1.57 which is quite close to being a Greek god!!

Year 10 have been asking lots of ques-tions and making important decisions during the subject selection process this term. They have re-ceived lots of differ-ent information from their teachers and Head Teachers about the expectations and content of Senior Mathematics courses and we are looking forward to strong numbers in our Year 11 Mathematics classes for 2020.

SeniorsYear 11 are busily finishing topics in preparation for the Preliminary Examinations in Weeks 9 and 10. We will have plenty of time for revision and encourage students to start preparing study notes and completing chapter reviews, so they feel organised and relaxed come exam time.

Year 12 are at the pointy end of their time at MRHS. Advanced and Extension students have finished the course content and have begun their preparation for the HSC Examination. Standard 1 and 2 students are not far behind them. All Mathematics students have completed their final assessment tasks and can now knuckle down on getting a revision routine in place. Our Standard 2 classes will combine at the Wade site for an Online Study Day on Tuesday 17th September. This will be a huge benefit to students who will be able to ask questions from HSC markers and other experts, as well as get lots of valuable pointers as they prepare for the HSC exams. Students will receive more information on this soon.

2019 has been a great year so far for the new combined MRHS Mathematics faculties and we look forward to working collaboratively to continue this success.

Year 9 Report - Griffith SiteA group of Year 9 students from both sites have recently returned from their school camp to Mt Buller. The group of students faced many challenges when learning how to Ski or Snowboard. Many of the students expe-rienced the snow for the first time on this trip, which was a great opportunity.

All Year 9 students are currently in the middle of completing a 3 week Youth Aware Mental Health Program (YAM). YAM is a program aimed at addressing the mental health needs of young peo-ple. YAM involves discussion and role play. It aims to get young people in-volved and talking about mental health. By doing this young people will learn problem solving skills and gain knowl-edge about mental health. For more in-formation visit http://www.y-a-m.org/

Lastly, as Term 3 hits the half way mark students in Year 9 should start to receive assignments. I encourage Year 9 students to keep an assessment cal-endar in a visible location at home, so that they can keep on top of it and manage their time effectively.

All the best.

Industrial Arts Year 12 Major projects - Griffith SiteThe Industrial Technology HSC Major Projects were due on the 15th of August.

Congratulations to Emily Ruskin (Griffith Site) who produced an impressive curved door jewellery box with 6 drawers and a detailed folio. Emily’s jewellery box was made from Jarrah and Tasmanian Oak with a contrast-ing Camphor Laurel inlay that she created with a laser cutter. The curved doors required the use of a bending form which she manufactured from structural plywood. Emily used Autodesk Fusion 360 CAD software to produce 3D models of her jewellery box and the bend-ing form. She also produced a good set of working and assembly drawings which she laser cut into some timber to assist with her presentation of her project.

Well done Emily !!

Science Week 2019 - Destination Moon: More Missions, More Science! This year’s Science Week was out of this world! We had a week filled with scientific knowledge, fun and ex-periences. The week kicked off with an exhibition of student work ranging from Mars Colonies to Nuclear Fission.

Students travelled into faraway galaxies and explored other planets through VR goggles on Tuesday.

In Wednesday’s STEM Club, robots were rolling around as students programmed the Sphero robots to do flips and tricks. The more musi-cal ones were using Makey Makeys and the conductivity of food and plasticine to create piano notes. During Term 2 we also ran the RACI Crystal Growing Compe-tition. Students used chemistry techniques to try growing the clearest, best shaped alum crystal. Two students, Ryan Kelly and Litea Krupszky received Highly Com-mended awards for their Alum Crystals against all other NSW stu-dents who entered the competition.

Reminder to all students STEM Club is on every Tuesday recess in Lab 4, check the daily notices to keep updated on all future Science and STEM activities.

The KFC Youth Foundation aims at building confidence in young Australians. Ninety percent of their restau-rant team members are under the age of 25, so building confidence in young people is a cause that is pretty close to their heart. The KFC Youth Foundation partners with a handful of community partners who offer meaningful youth services in the areas of mentorship, skills development, mental wellbeing and overcoming disadvantage. It’s their chance to help young Aussies beyond their restaurants and give young people the skills and support they need to thrive in the world now and in the years beyond.

In support of their Foundation and the Griffith community, KFC Griffith hosted the inaugural Eat With Confidence charity evening on Monday 19th August 2019. The evening was a meeting of the minds of local community members and busi-ness leaders all showing their support in the youth of Griffith. The event provided a platform for local youth community service providers to share their mission, stories and how they contribute to supporting and developing Griffith’s youth. KFC served their famous fresh hand-prepared chicken, which was generously donated by Baiada, as well as raising much needed funds to support our young Aussies, with all proceeds going directly to the KFC Youth Foundation and their charity partners. The night was a wonderful occasion and it was great to be invited to the first ever Eat with Confidence Charity Youth Dinner. Both Matthew Taituave (Year 10) & Jayden Gill (Year 9) both spoke very well and repre-sented Murrumbidgee Regional High School and Clontarf proudly.

On Friday 9 August 2019, 13 students from the Wade Site, Mr Damien Thorne (Aboriginal Educa-tion Officer), Matthew Daniels (Aboriginal Commu-nity Liaison Officer) and I attended the first Indige-nous Games at Hanwood Public School.

It was a great opportunity to have some fun, learn about Kee’an (pronounced Keeyarn – an Indigenous game that aims to develop coordination and agility), play Oztag and Rob the Nest and connect with the polite, curious and friendly Hanwood Public School students.

Susan McAllister (teacher at Hanwood Public School) commented on how well the older and younger students integrated for the duration of the games and how much the Hanwood kids enjoying the Welcome to Country smoking ceremony that was facilitated by Mr Thorne. ‘Let us do it again’ she said.

The development of indigenous knowledge in schools is an educational, social and political priority highlighted by Associate Provost Prof Marcia Lang-ton at the recent Garma Festival held in NE Arnhem Land on 3rd August 2019.

Ms McAllister, in collaboration with the University of Melbourne and teachers around Australia have developed a suite of educational resources centred around the themes of Fire, Water and Astronomy. These resources are tailored to the Australian Cur-riculum and have the ‘thumbs up’ from the Indige-nous community. Check it out at https://indigenous-knowledge.research.unimelb.edu.au/about and her Speech at the Garma Festival https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnjHUXvWERU&feature=youtu.be

Students who attended were: Kai Hearne, Jyi Romeo, Tristan O’Malley, Brodie Johnson, Analiese Harris, Alanna Bernardi, Demi Robins, Myah Simpson, Tanaiya Coe, Lawshonda Kelly, Paige King, Talia Charles, Breanna Little.

They were fantastic student ambassadors of Mur-rumbidgee Regional High School!

Jan Cathcart Scholarship - Investing in the Future of the Australian Rice Industry

2020 Applications Now Open – Up to $30,000 Available to Fund Tertiary Studies

Applications for the 2020 Jan Cathcart Scholarship are now open for women involved in the Australian rice industry, offering financial assistance valued at $10,000 a year for up to three years of tertiary study. The scholarship, which honours the memory of long-term SunRice employee Jan Cathcart and her 43 years with the rice industry, provides numerous opportunities for recipients, from financial support, to work experience and employment placements with SunRice, and professional and personal growth. SunRice Chairman Laurie Arthur encouraged women in the rice industry to apply, saying: “The recipients of the Jan Cathcart Scholarship have all shown a desire to contribute to the rice industry, as well as agriculture as a whole, and we’re looking to support the professional development of women in these industries. This scholarship pays tribute to Jan’s enormous commitment to the rice industry by helping recipients in their studies and with employment options.”

Here’s what some of the past recipients have to say:

“I applied for the Jan Cathcart Scholarship because of how much the rice industry has given my family and how much I want to contribute and give back. Jan left the most incredible legacy and I think if I can be half the woman she was, then that would be enough. I highly encourage young women to

apply for the scholarship to further develop and support the rice industry.” Annabel Arnold, 2018 recipient - to read a Q&A with Annabel, click here.

“This scholarship is important so that women can picture themselves in the rice industry and more

broadly in agriculture. It is important that we keep our talented women from the bush, in the bush. The scholarship made me seriously consider what my career in agriculture looked like and SunRice has

paved the way.” Sarah Cudmore, 2017 recipient - to read a Q&A with Sarah, click here.

““The work opportunities that have arisen due to the scholarship have enabled me to explore numerous areas within the business and ultimately expose me to roles that I may never have

considered without such guidance. In these difficult drought conditions and with the water situation, the scholarship helps to shine a light not only on the premium rice that is grown in the Riverina but

also the talent that can be found there.” Millie Mertz, 2016 recipient - to read a Q&A with Millie, click here.

Women connected to the rice industry, shareholders and employees of SunRice and their extended families are urged to consider applying for the scholarship. Applications close on Saturday 12 October 2019, with the winner to be announced in early 2020.
