PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Week 8 already and as always it is very busy at The Entrance Public School. Thank you to all the students for their outstanding representation at last weeks’ Reconciliation Assembly and the receiving of the message stick. It was a pleasure to hear our guest speakers talk about how passionate they are about our beautiful Central Coast and what family and kinship mean to them. Preschool Assessment & Rating It is a very exciting time for our school as we have received notification that our Preschool will be undergoing their Assessment & Rating process in the coming weeks. Our preschool will be rated against the National Quality Standards (NQS. There are seven quality areas, 18 standards and 58 elements that make up the NQS. If you would like more information about this process please visit http://www.acecqa.gov.au/national-quality-framework/assessments-and-ratings Congratulations to our senior boys PSSA state knockout soccer team who won a thrilling game in a penalty shootout. Thank you to Ms Martinez and all the parents who assisted with transport and supporting our team. A reminder that for student safety the school gates are locked from 9.30am until 3.00pm, we welcome parental involvement in our wonderful school and visitors are reminded to sign in at the office between the times that the gates are locked. Visitors are reminded that lessons continue until 3.15 and to be mindful not to disrupt learning for our students. Please also remember that as adults visiting the school you are expected to model appropriate behaviours in all areas of the school including the canteen, office and passage ways. Thank you for your assistance in making this great school even better. Please also be aware that over the next few weeks the police will have a greater presence in the area especially around the school in the mornings and afternoons. I urge all motorists and pedestrians to continue to obey the road safety

laws to ensure the safety of our students and school community, especially in the Kiss and Ride zone. Is your child making friends at school? Term 2 Week 8 Wednesday 15th June 2016

The Garawa Pre-school is run by the Department of Education and Communities and fees have been heavily subsidised to cater for the needs of our community. This year the full fee rate per day is $15 per day. If the family has a Health Care card or are Aboriginal, fee relief is applied and the cost is reduced to $7.00 per day. To date fees have not been given to us for 2017. Warren Mee DEPUTY PRINCIPAL K-6 BW NEWS

What a fantastic time we had last Friday at our Multi Sports Day. The children were teamed up with students from Irrawang PS and spent the day rotating

around 5 different sports: cricket, golf, rugby league, AFL and soccer. It was delightful to see their huge smiles, as each of them tried their very hardest at the various activities. And didn’t they lift the roof off the bus with their enthusiastic singing on the way there and back! Swimming Scheme Next term students in K6BW will again have the opportunity to participate in weekly swimming lessons at Mingara Pool at a cost of $5 per week. Mingara have very kindly offered us their bus free of charge to transport students to and from the pool. We hope all the children will participate in this valuable opportunity to develop essential lifesaving skills. More information will follow. Dear Parents/Caregivers, We have had an extremely busy fortnight. Not only did we have a fantastically organised athletics carnival, some students also participated in District X Country as well as competing in the semi-finals of the Public Speaking competition. Our Take 3

representatives spoke to the whole stage about the benefits of keeping our school and beaches clean and they will be doing the same at Newcastle University Ourimbah Campus where they will be hosting a Take 3 exhibition for the community. There have been a few notes sent home about some events coming up so please ask your child to show them to you so that these great opportunities provided by TEPS are not missed. Public Speaking A big thank you to all our semi-finalists: Sarah D, Amien D, Kaitlyn C, Laykin P, Mia D, Ashleigh C, Ella B, Jakub S, Patience L and Zoe H. It was great to see the students speak with such confidence and enthusiasm. Stage 2 were a great

audience and showed tremendous respect and support for their peers. These students are our finalist and will represent TEPS at the final hosted by The Lions Club. Finalists: Kaitlyn C, Ashleigh C, Patience L and Zoe H.

Bike safety for students A reminder to students who ride their bikes/scooters to school that they MUST wear a helmet. No helmet = NO riding Attendance Chatter Please note that teacher duty of care for students is between 8.45am and 3.15pm. This is the time when our staff are rostered to be on duty. There is no formal supervision provided for students outside these times. We ask parents to ensure that students are not at school before 8:45am and are not left at school after 3.15pm. These regulations are made for the safety of children. Staff are often required to attend after school meetings both on and off the premises. There are occasions when all teaching staff are involved in professional activities and need to leave the premises as close to 3.15pm as possible. Office staff are not responsible for the supervision of students before or after school. We seek your co-operation by ensuring that all children are escorted home as close to 3.15pm as possible. There are rare occasions when parents may be unable to be here at that time. We ask that you call the school and inform us when this occurs. Your support with this matter is much appreciated. What’s Happening in 3KD!!! It's been a busy start to the term, with our Year 3's sitting NAPLAN for the first time. Some of us were nervous, but we knew we would be fine and there was nothing to worry about! This Term we are studying the book "The Twits" by Roald Dahl and the students are quite engrossed with how terrible Mr and Mrs Twit are to each other. Our art is based around an idea from 'The Twits' and it involves the students working in small groups to produce a commercial for a particular item from (but it's a secret so we can’t tell you just yet). This commercial will be written by the students in 3KD and acted out in front of the green screen to add special effects. So stay tuned!! We have started STEM this Term and 3KD are loving it! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The students are working in groups to overcome a problem together. They are given specific materials and a problem that can only be successful if they work together to come up with a resolution. 3KD have started Sports in Schools this term and are loving it. STAGE 3 NEWS Hey Team, Student Absences Winter is now upon us. Winter typically means an increase in student sickness and absenteeism. It is important that all students attend school on a daily basis, unless they are sick or another critical reason prevents them from attending.

ALL ABSENCES REQUIRE AN EXPLANATION. Parents and caregivers are required to provide a valid reason if their child has not attended school on any one day. There are several modes that can be used to do this note, phone call, see your child’s teacher or use the School App. If students are sick consistently or if they are absent from school from extended periods of time, a medical certificate is required to verify the absence. It would help us here at school if explanations (in any of the above forms) could be provided immediately upon the return of students to school. If, after seven days no explanation is received, the absence is logged as unjustified and will be monitored by the Student Wellbeing Team and the Department of Education. Student education is vital and the first step to student success is regular school attendance. CAPA (Creative and Practical/Performing Arts) Electives This term Stage 3 students have been given the ability to choose creative or performing electives that run on Thursday afternoons. The electives offered this term include Visual Arts, Drama, Auslan Signing, Cross Stitch, Papier Mache or Digital Design. This term has been a very busy term with a number of other events that have been scheduled on Thursdays so these elective streams will be continued into the first couple of weeks in Term 3. SLAM Celebration Assembly On Monday Stage 3 will be holding their final SLAM (Successful Students All in Meet) for this term. Outstanding effort in Mathematics. Parents, caregivers and family will receive invitations to this event. A celebratory morning tea will be held after our official assembly. As a stage, we have really seen some transformative efforts this year! Canberra Deposits to secure students’ placement on our excursion to Canberra ARE NOW DUE. The balance does not have to be paid until Term 3 Week 7. This is going to be a great memory making experience! Have an awesome week!
