Department for Education
As you are aware Hahndorf Primary and Preschool are proudly part of South Australia’s public education system. We are managed by the Department for Education (DFE) previously known as The Department of Education and Child Development (DECD). The Department for Education aims to achieve quality learning and wellbeing outcomes for children and young people, with the goal of delivering world class primary and secondary education in all curriculum areas.
The DFE website is very informative www.education.sa.gov.au and incudes many resources for families.
Parent Workshop We have been offered a subsidised parent workshop. A flyer was sent home in the previous newsletter and will only cost $48 or $6 a session. The Circle of Security® Parenting™ program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened: • Understand your child’s emotional world by learning to read
emotional needs • Support your child’s ability to successfully manage emotions • Enhance the development of your child's self esteem • Honour your innate wisdom and desire for your child to be
secure This is supported by the Department for Human Services and Mt Barker Community Centre and will be an 8 week course , starting on Wednesday 1 August, 9-11am at Hahndorf Primary School.
Thank You
I would like to acknowledge the contribution that Steph Banfield makes to our Sport and Physical Education programme. In particular the extra organisation required on her part which supports our children in accessing activities such as Knock–out Competitions, SAPSASA competitions, District Days, Courier Cup, Cross Country, as well as organising our School Sports Day. These events allow many children the opportunity to experience a sense of worth through belonging to a team, as well as developing resilience and a sense of fair play. Programmes such as PE and the Arts are critical in supporting cognitive development, social skills, emotional and physical wellbeing. Children solve problems, manage emotions, utilise listening and speaking skills, work collaboratively and negotiate, as well as having fun!
Congratulations
Congratulations to our Senior Choir who
achieved an A- for their assessment.
During this assessment an external
moderator conducted and assessed the
choir on a number of songs. The choir is
now working hard to learn the entire
repertoire of songs over the next term in
preparation for their concert later in the
year.
Congratulations also to the Pedal Prix
team and their families who participated
in the 6 hour event at Victoria Park on the
17th of June, they are also in preparation
mode in readiness for the 24 hour event
in September.
SCHOOL DRESS CODE
The school dress code includes plain red or
black jumpers, preferably with the
school logo and does not include jumpers
with other logos, writing or from sports clubs. We encourage
plain jackets and parkas - preferably in
school colours.

In mathematics the Strempel Room have been exploring the concept of sharing in readiness for division and multiplication
skills. They have also been finding and naming shapes.
In mathematics the Room 3 Reception children have been
practising subitising, which is;
“knowing how many by looking
and not counting”. The Year one group
have been practising addition
using dice and a number line.
During Research Based Learning sessions with Lindy, the Room 1 children have been learning about animals which lay eggs. This has been further explored during literacy sessions, as they have been reading nonfiction texts and writing reports. In mathematics they have been learning to skip count.
The Room 2 children
have also been working
with Room 1 and Lindy
learning about egg
layers (oviparous
animals), which has also
been linked to literacy
and visual art. In
mathematics they have
been using Minecraft to
learn about perimeters
and area. They are
developing brochures to
sell the houses they have
designed.
In mathematics the Room
4 children have been
focusing on exploring
multiplication strategies.
These varying strategies
include; sharing into equal
groups, arrays, skip
counting on number lines
and repeated additions.
In literacy the Room 9 students are exploring
alliterations and descriptive text.
In mathematics they are continuing their
focus on measurement and have been
exploring area, volume and are beginning a
unit on shape.
In science the Room 8
students have made
recycled paper exploring
sustainability and
recycling. They will use the
paper to create recycled
art. They have been
exploring measurement in
mathematics and have
designed their own floor
plans.

From the OSHC Hive….
Friday 29th June is a Pupil Free Day. In order for us to staff adequately we need to know our numbers. Please book for childcare asap as there will be limited spaces available.
Vacation Care program has gone out to families via our newsletter last week and bookings are being accepted. A reminder that no Vac Care bookings can be accepted if money is still outstanding from the last break. Please see Sheryle or Helen if you would like to make payment arrangements.
From 2 July 2018, the Australian Government is introducing a New Child Care Package. The Government reports that there are still a large number of families registered for child care who
have not yet updated their details on myGov. In order to receive your family entitlements, this must be done before July 2nd. We have no input or control over the Child Care Subsidy but families are responsible for the full cost of their childcare, regardless of their subsidy and must therefore make payments as per our fees policy.
St Vincent Art competition – children need to be registered by a parent and our consent form returned OSHC if your child is interested in entering. Please see Helen for details.

The Room 6 students are creating apps, which they are attempting to sell to
their teacher, by writing a persuasive text. They are also involved in a student
initiated science investigation. They have chosen their investigation which they will research
and report on.
During HASS the Room 5 students are currently working on
an Aboriginal Cultural Study and will invite
the other classes to see their completed work. They have completed
a project on the purpose of animals in
world conflicts. In mathematics they are
working on fractions.
S7 have been exploring the myths of Ancient Greece. In particular how the myths explained how the world worked. In health they have focused on their healthy eating and the impact this has on our body.

KNOCKOUT NETBALL
On Friday Mansi, Matilda, Ellie, Annie, Amy-Lee, Abbey, Gracie, Sofia and Tahnee represented Hahndorf Primary in knockout netball. We had heard that the opposition, Woodside Primary, would be tough but at half time we were only a few goals behind.
Unfortunately in the second half of the game Woodside pulled away and the final score was 24 – 6. I am very proud of the girls as they never gave up and kept playing with their heads held high. This resulted in the last quarter being our most successful where we not only scored 3 goals but also restricted the number of goals scored by Woodside.

Over the last few weeks we have had many people contribute to our ‘People Who Help Us’ focus. Maya’s mum, Kasandra, is a doctor. She came to Preschool and talked about her role. She showed us her stethoscope and listened to our heartbeat. The Blue Group are going to have a visit soon from Savi’s Mum, Kandegama, who is also a doctor.
Dentists from the Mt Barker Dental Centre came and showed us how to care for our teeth. They taught us the correct brushing techniques and talked about foods which keep our teeth healthy.
Jada’s mum and dad came to Preschool and made yummy pumpkin soup with us. It had lots of healthy ingredients that keep our bodies and teeth strong. It was delicious! The Blue Group made fruit face pancakes last week. We talked about different emotions and how to display these feelings with our faces and on our pancakes. They were also delicious!!
Jacob’s aunty, Kelly, also visited us. She is a theatre nurse. We all learnt about her role and what they wear in the theatre room. She gave us some gowns to use at Preschool. We have been wearing them and pretending that we’re doctors and nurses.
Oliver R’s dad, Steve, works for SA Water. He brought in pieces of pipe for us to use in our making and showed us photos of his work, his big truck and maps of pipe lines. Steve showed us the app “Let the Poo Thru” and played the game with us. We learnt about what can go down the toilet and what cannot!! This helps keep our water ways clean and healthy.
On Tuesday 5th July, the Red Group will be hosting the school assembly. Please join us at the school Gym at 2:25m.
