I am delighted to be writing my first Deputy Principal report. After 3 weeks I think I can say I am well and truly settled and I have been made to feel very welcome at Billabong High School by both students and staff. The Year 11 Senior Excursion was a success. All staff and external organiser commented on how well behaved and polite our students were. A huge thank you to all staff that went on the excursion and to Mrs Ferguson in particular for organising the paper work. Our Year 12s are steadily working their way through their HSC and we wish them well with their studies. Page 1 Year 9s will be participating in a Youth Awareness of Mental Health program in the following weeks. The program is aimed at building their knowledge on mental health through role playing and discussions. If you do not want your child to participate in this program, please contact the Front Office. One of my roles as Deputy is to focus on student behaviour and with that in mind we are trialling a Sports Reflection room for Wednesday Sport. I am pleased to say that there were very few students in the room last week. We have been working on building team spirit, respecting each other and the rules of the sport. Aurora Residential Last week seven students from BHS attended Aurora College’s Residential in Collaroy, Sydney. It was a great opportunity for the students to re-connect with their virtual teachers and classmates in the “real” world. Apart from attending English, Math and Science classes, students experienced other educational experiences including a rock platform study, attending a Shakespeare performance in the Sydney Opera House and visiting the State Library. During a Formal Assembly, with guest speaker Sharon Ford in attendance (Executive Director, Leadership and High Performance at NSW Department of Education), Robbie Thomas was presented the ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award by Lt Luke. This award recognises a student who demonstrates leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader community. Also during the assembly, Page 2

both Robbie Thomas and Genevieve White were awarded a Galaxy Award for continued excellence and application. Congratulations Robbie and Gen! Senior Excursion to SydneyLast week our Year 11 class went on the annual Sydney excusion.Day 1After an early 6:45am start we hit the road and then turned back around because Mr Pilikas forgot his bag. Once we eventually got to Sydney we headed straight to Bondi for surfing lessons. We discovered some of our year group had some hidden talents, some did not. Day 2We quickly learnt that it was going to be a long week of walking and excess use of google maps. As each class split up to attend subject related activities it became clear that there was no clear meeting spot (or time) that we were to meet for lunch, resulting in a bunch of country kids from the bush wondering around

a food court bigger than the school, trying to figure out where the others were. That night we were treated to an “all you can eat” buffet, whilst cruising around the Sydney harbour. I can safely say the buffet was definitely taken advantage of, with people going back for thirds and even fourths. Day 3After another early start the group walked down to the Sydney Tower for a tour and lunch. After the initial shock of how large it was, we filed into the elevators. While the elevators were designed to fit four people comfortably, we managed about 10 per elevator by packing in like sardines. Once in the towers we were able to look around the magnificent views and were lucky enough to have another buffet lunch on the rotating floor. This did create some air sickness but everyone held their lunch down. That night we were able to go to the Cirque

Du Soleil Circus. It was agreed by all that it was amazing!Day 4On our final day in Sydney, after walking all week, we were all pretty exhausted and complaining of blisters. Luckily we were able to catch a train down to Circular Quay where we caught a ferry to Manly for dinner. Day 5After an early start we packed up again and loaded onto the bus. after some last minute running to and from the bus, and a few lost keys later we were finally headed home after a long but entirely enjoyable trip. Upon returning to Culcairn it was quickly realised there are alot more flies here then that of Sydney…We owe a massive thank you to Mrs Ferguson who organised the trip for us and to Mr Pilikas, Mr Lawson, Mrs Fenwick and Mrs Tooney for taking us on this trip, supervising us and allowing us to have this amazing opportunity.
