Term 2 Week 2 May 6, 2019 www.stjohnsprimarydubbo.catholic.edu.au From the Principal’s desk…. Welcome to Week 2. What a great start to the term last week. I was very proud of the students and staff. The energy in the classrooms was very positive and enthusiastic. Well done SJP. Tomorrow evening, commencing at 7:00pm the P&F will be holding their next meeting. All are welcome to these meetings. The P&F is a vital part of our school, particularly linking our parents with the school in decision making. The P&F leadership team are very proactive and welcome new ideas from parents. All are welcome. Tomorrow is certainly going to be a busy and fun day at St John’s Primary. Many of our students are heading off to Coolah for the Diocesan Cross Country running carnival. All the best of luck to our runners. We will also be welcoming Mrs Kerry Morris to SJP on Tuesday with the 2020 Year 7 team as they meet with the Year 6 students. The transition to High School is made easier with these positive experiences with the College team. Mothers Day Liturgy - Tomorrow we will be coming together to celebrate our mothers and those who are like mothers to us with a special Mother's Day Liturgy. Year 6 and Kindergarten have prepared the Liturgy and all are welcome. The Liturgy commences at 10:15am An Irish blessing There is but one and only one, Whose love will fail you never. One of my favourite parts of my role is meeting families as they begin or continue their relationship with SJP. When we meet with new families, we share who we are as a community, our rela- tionship and connection with Parish. We also allow time to tour the school, particularly the Kinder classrooms and playground. My hope always is that families instantly feel the strong sense of community and feel confident that the wellbeing, spirituality and learning of their child is our priority. Gospel and Reflection: Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. ‘They knew it was the Lord.’ Today’s gospel has Jesus appearing to the disciples who are out together unsuccessfully fishing. Jesus calls out to them to recast their nets, which become abundantly full. Back on the shore together, the breakfast is a Eucharistic celebration by a charcoal fire. This detail is important: Peter had denied Jesus three times, warming himself by a charcoal fire. The symbolism is dramatically rich, especially in the way Peter is asked the same question three times – a slightly embarrassing, perplexing moment. This conversation after breakfast takes the form of a ritual healing: Peter is able to reaffirm his love for Jesus, who in turn confirms Peter in his mission. The notion of fishermen who can’t catch fish seems to add to the feeling of the disciples floundering with-out the presence of Jesus. His appearance alters this, and they are instructed to follow him. This is quite an invitation. God Bless and have a wonderful week Anthony O’Leary
