TERM 2 WEEK 1 1 MAY 2020
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome back to Term 2. It was wonderful seeing students return from their term break ready and excited to be back at school. Over the last few days our total number of students in attendance each day has hovered closed to 60%. Next week should see many more students coming back to school and enjoying the wonderful programs and activities offered at Lathlain Primary School.
I would like to thank all parents and caregivers for observing the regulations outlined by the Department of Education relating to adults being on the school grounds before and after school. All the children have been walking confidently onto the school grounds ready for the day and at the end of the day leaving the school grounds excited to see their parents.
We have been very thorough with our cleaning regime and we have employed a full time cleaner to walk through the grounds disinfecting high touch surfaces throughout the day. Areas and items being cleaned include:
Playground equipment – before school, after recess and after lunch
Student toilets – before school, after recess and after lunch
door frames
light switches
tables
desks
computer keyboards and many other high touch surfaces throughout
the school.
We will continue to perform this cleaning each day during the term.
I would like to thank all the teachers for their splendid work in creating and uploading student activities onto Connect for the start of Term 2. Although students returned to school during the week, there are students also working from home. Both groups of students have been completing activities created by their teachers either online, work packages or with face to face teaching in the classroom.
Work Package Drop Off – If you have school work to drop off we will have year level containers at the front of the school (Howick Street) each Wednesday. Just leave the work in the tub. Teachers will receive and assess the work.
I would like to welcome Ms Lauren Richards who will be teaching the Year 2 students in Room 2.
Mrs Dellaposta from Room 17 has taken leave for Term 2 and we will be filling this vacancy very soon. Ms Vodanovich will continue to be the classroom teacher on Friday.

I would like to thank our wonderful gardener, Mr Des Morgan for the outstanding work in the school grounds. He has cleaned the untidy sections in the school gardens as well as extending some of the grassed area at the front of the school for children to access during recess and lunchtimes.
The School Canteen will be ready for Week 3 of this term. Further information about the canteen can be found in this newsletter.
The P&C have continued to be active during the school break. They have implemented an innovative Mother’s Day stall for this year by providing the opportunity to purchase a lucky dip gift for Mum for Mother’s Day. Thank you to the P&C for organising this event and continuing to be dynamic during these difficult times.
I would finally like to thank the school community for your support during this time as information from government authorities has been flowing quickly and changes have had to be made at short notice. We will continue to provide updated information via the school newsletter, the school website or Skoolbag.
Kind regards,
Ian Bersan

2021 ENROLMENTS
In Western Australia, children can start their education in Kindergarten, however compulsory schooling starts the following year in Pre-Primary.
Who needs to enrol?
You need to apply to enrol your children in school for 2021 if they are:
starting Kindergarten – 4 years old by 30 June 2021
starting Pre-Primary, the first year of compulsory school – 5 years old by 30 June 2021
starting Year 7, the first year of secondary school
All children of compulsory school age must be enrolled in school and attend every day – this is the law.
Every child from Pre-Primary to Year 12 is guaranteed a place at their local public school. Places in Kindergarten may be limited at your local school, so we encourage you to apply now.
Applying for Kindergarten – Immunisation Laws
Western Australia now has immunisation laws that will help to better protect our children and the wider community from vaccine-preventable diseases.
When you enrol your child in Kindergarten you will need to provide your child’s current Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement, which shows your child is ‘up-to-date’ with all the scheduled immunisations (according to the National Immunisation Program) for their age. This statement must be no more than two months old.
If you would like to know more about the immunisation requirements, obtaining an AIR Immunisation History Statement or how to access immunisation services go to HealthyWA.
Please submit your 2021 Kindy application by 30 July 2020.
SCHOOL WEBSITE
The new school website is live however we are still finalising all the information, it should be completed in
the coming weeks.
You can view the site at lathlainps.wa.edu.au.
BENEFITS OF GRATITUDE AND MINDFULNESS
- Enhances wellbeing - Better performance in schools
- Boosts resilience - Reduces stress
- Reduces anxiety - Improves sleep
- Reduces rumination - Improves emotion regulation
- Improves focus and attention - May reduce aggressive/violent behaviours
- Improves working memory
How to practise gratitude and mindfulness: - Keep a journal and write 3 things you are grateful for everyday (no matter how small they may seem)
- Create a gratitude jar by decorating a jar (or box) with your child and encourage them each day to write
down 1 thing they are grateful for (or something good that happened that day), and placing it into the
jar. At the end of each month you can empty the jar and reflect on all the things you have to be thankful
for.
- Mindfulness countdown – 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things
you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste
- Cosmic Kids Yoga has some great mindfulness for kids videos
https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga
- Look for the ‘Stress Busters’ document found on the SkoolBag App under ‘Chaplain Information’.
If you need further support, feel free to contact me, I am available at School on Thursdays and Fridays. Alternatively you can call Lifeline 13 11 14 available 24/7, or chat online at https://www.lifeline.org.au/crisis-chat (7pm - midnight, 7 nights).

SCHOOL BANKING
Message from Commonwealth Bank
The health, safety and wellbeing of our communities and our people remains our highest priority. Due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding coronavirus, the School Banking program will remain on hold. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed with any updates including how we will be managing Dollarmite tokens for students.
In the meantime, here are some handy online resources for parents who wish to maintain momentum with their child’s financial education:
Start Smart: these resources have been created to improve children’s money
management skills, and is aligned to the Australian Curriculum and the National Consumer Financial
Literacy Framework.
The Beanstalk: offers videos and fun activities for children to learn about money.
BOOK CLUB NEWS
In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but
for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently.
