Principal Report Due to the lack of rain, the building works are well on schedule. The

buildings look much bigger than I thought they would be so after being

crammed into smaller spaces for a year it will be a pleasure to be able

to stretch out a bit. It looks like the buildings will be handed over

sometime in December.

One result of the Federal election result last weekend is that the

promise of $80,000 to be put towards our kitchen garden and to

provide some artificial grass in the new complex will not happen. That

was only going to happen if Labor was elected.

Due to excavation works in our yard over the holidays, mud will be a

significant problem when the rain finally comes. On wet days it would

be a good idea to not put your children in their best shoes. On these

days, teachers will be asking the children to take off their shoes before

entering the classroom to try to protect the carpet.

NAPLAN has come and gone. Being a small school, the results of one or

two children can have a huge impact on the overall school results.

Having sat with some of the Grade 5 English as an Additional Language

(EAL) students during the Numeracy test, it is clear that the language

used in many of the questions was quite difficult for these students.

With the NAPLAN tests, teachers are not allowed to help or explain the

meaning of questions.

A number of students are arriving at school quite sick. We have first

aide trained staff but no nurse and only one bed in the sick bay. We do

not have the ability to look after your child when they are too ill to be

at school. We will ring you and get you to pick up your child but it

would be much better if you just kept them home with you. When a

child is sick they much prefer to be home rather than sitting on the sick

bay bed with a bucket in front of them, waiting for you to pick them up.

The Department of Health strongly recommends that everyone gets a

flu shot this year as a number of people, including children have died

from flu across Australia. Most Chemist outlets do them quite cheaply.

CURRICULUM

DAY

Just a reminder to

parents that Monday

27th May is a

CURRICULUM DAY –

no school.

Page 2: Term 2 No. 7 Thursday 23 May 2019 2018

Message from the Assistant Principal As the winter weather begins to settle in so do the nasty winter

germs and bugs. We have had a number of students coming to

school quite ill and needing to be sent home. As much as it is

important that your child attends school it is more important that

your child is healthy when attending school. If your child is feeling

unwell with a temperature, a sore tummy, a sore throat, a

headache or has been vomiting please keep your child home.

Bringing a sick child to school leads to the spreading of the germs

and more children end up sick and at times the staff end up ill

too. So if your child has been home sick for a couple of days

please make sure they are well enough before making the

decision for them to return to school.

BRING YOUR GUMBOOTS TO SCHOOL! Unfortunately, due to all the works going on around the school with the

new school build we have lots of mud. On wet weather days students

are encouraged to bring and wear their gumboots during playing times

outside. If your child doesn’t own a pair of gumboots they will be asked

to take their shoes off when entering their classroom to limit the

amount of mud coming into the school buildings.

School Uniform This newsletter you will find the School Uniform Policy attached. It is compulsory for all students of Dinjerra to

wear their school uniform. If your child is not wearing the school uniform an Out of Uniform notice will be sent

home as a reminder to ensure that your child wears the school uniform and make the necessary corrections.

Next Tuesday 28th May will be our School Photos day. Please make sure you have the correct uniform for your

child on this day.

Word Work Each morning the grade Preps work with Miss Ivy to continue to learn the letter names and sounds. This term the Preps are learning to read, spell and write words. We use the strategy Look, Say, Name, Cover, Write, Check. Last week’s letter was Nn so we learnt how to spell and write the word not. We then put the word into a sentence. Look at all these wonderful spelling preps!

Each morning the grade Ones work with Miss Krystal to learn consonant blends. We have focused on the sh, st and sp sound. We have investigated the sounds and found words that have each sound at the beginning, middle and end. The grade Ones have also been using the strategy Look, Say, Name, Cover, Write, Check to learn their M100W words.

Reading the Mioow Words:

Congratulations to Riley and Sebastian for learning to read the Golden words.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Eliza (P/1S) and Ethan (P/1S) for reading all of the golden words, they are now beginning to learn the red words. CONGRATULATIONS to Aras (P/1S) for reading all the red words and Marcus (P/1S) for reading all of the orange words. Keep up the great work Prep Ones!

Metropolitan Fire Brigade Visit

The Sunshine MFB visited the Prep/One children last week. The Fire Fighters talked to us and showed us pictures of ‘Good Fires’ and ‘Bad Fires’. They showed us a smoke alarm and explained to us what to do if we hear the alarm go off. Connie showed us how to ‘Get down low and go go go’. The Fire Fighter dressed in his protective uniform and put on his breathing apparatus so we understand what they look like and sound like. We all know to call triple 000 in an emergency, but we need to learn our address. Parents, watch out for the homework from the Fire Fighters to do as a family to ensure you are ready in case of an emergency. The MFB will visit again this week as our session was cut short because the Fire Fighters had to attend a real emergency. The children are writing information texts about ‘How Fire Fighters Help our Community’. The Prep/Ones listened very well and asked some great questions.

Reading in the 2/3 area During term two in the 2/3 area we have been setting aside time each week for shared reading as a whole class and

also buddy reading, where we can enjoy books with our classmates. As a whole class we have re-organised our

class library so that it is easier to find the books that we want to read and we have also been able to borrow some

big books which make reading with a small group easier as well as being fun to read!

Our focus during our reading workshop this term has been to understand the different features of a non-fiction text

and how to find the information that we need. We have also been learning about visualising as we read, where we

make a movie in our mind as we are reading or listening to a story.

Most importantly, students in 2/3 are showing a real love for reading!

Mothers’ Day Stall… We hope all the mums, nanas and carers enjoyed their

Mothers’ Day on Sunday 12th May. The children had a

lovely time choosing their presents at the Mothers’ Day

stalls. Thankyou everyone!!

Collecting 5c … The new fundraising activity for the rest of Term 2 will be

collecting 5c pieces. Students bring in their 5c pieces to

place in the money boxes in their classrooms. During the

coming weeks the grades will be counting their money

boxes to see how they are going. At the end of term each

grade will be lining up their 5c pieces on the oval. The

grade with the most 5c pieces will received a small reward.

Thankyou from the Fundraising Team.

The Bookfair started on Monday

20th May and finishes this Friday

24th May at 4:00pm. Every

purchase you make, earns learning

and literacy resources for our

school. See you there!!!!!!

4/6 Learning.

We have had a busy couple of week in 4/5/6! The Grade 5’s

undertook NAPLAN and worked incredibly hard. Thank you

to the Grade 4 and 6 students who were so thoughtful and

supportive of our Grade 5s.

It was great to have an excursion to Scienceworks at the end

of last week. We were fortunate to participate in a Robotics

coding workshop, where we programmed driverless cars.

Some of us even programmed an ambulance, complete with

flashing lights and sirens. Amazing to think that some of our

Dinjerra students might have this as an actual job one day!

We then had some time to spend in the interactive museum.

We were able to race Cathy Freeman, participate in a

wheelchair track race, and programme mood music in a DJ

booth. Thanks so much to our charity partner, Ardoch, for

making it possible.

In Literacy, our focus for the remainder of the term

centres around our Inquiry unit, Government. We will

be learning about systems of government, democracy,

and the rights of all people to live in a safe and

inclusive society. In light of the recent election, it would

be great if you could have conversations with your

child around these topics.

In Maths, we have been learning about measurement.

We have created various shapes and learned how to

accurately estimate, then measure, using different tools.

Did you know the length of your foot is the same

distance from your elbow to your wrist?

We also learned about the history of Islamic tiles. Using a

tutorial, we chose a design to recreate. It’s important to

know about symmetry, rotations, and angles when

creating these designs. We learned that if you get

distracted, it’s very easy to make a mistake!
