ANZAC DAYAssembly

On Friday 23 April we gathered as a College to remember all who have served our nations in times of conflict.

It was an honour to welcome Squadron Leader Laine Pearce who addressed the assembly. Laine reminded us that not only is the RAAF celebrating its centenary this year but that they commenced operation out of the Point Cook base – the longest continuing operating air base in the world!

We commemorated the fallen during the assembly with prayer, the Last Post and a minute’s silence. May we remember the sacrifices of the first ANZACs, Australians and New Zealanders, and the generations of men, women and children who have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the freedoms we enjoy.

Jake Cutajar (Year 11), Xavier Pantzikis (Year 12) and Lily McColl (Year 10, NDC) competed in the Wynspeak Youth Public Speaking competition on Tuesday 4 May. The standard of speakers was very high and Lily distinguished herself by winning the round. Lily went on to compete in the finals on Wednesday 16 June.

WynspeakCompetition

A week is a long time in these uncertain COVID times!

In late May we were blessed with magnificent weather for wonderful celebrations of Marianist Day and Open Day.

By lunchtime, the following Thursday, we were breaking the sad news to our musicians, performers and crew that the performances of Godspell, for that evening and Friday, had been cancelled. The good news was that two outstanding matinee performances had occurred to general acclaim from our primary school audiences.

During lockdown 4.1, students, staff, leaders, parents and carers have, again, stepped up magnificently.

In managing related challenges, the keys to resilience have continued to be important: gratitude, mindfulness and compassion.

Our capacity to switch to effective remote learning through our well-designed digitally-based subject programs has again made a big difference. This success continues to be supported by the many millennials and zoomers in the Emmanuel community for whom digital connections are part of the world in which they move.

May we continue to look out for one another, and for those in our broader world, as we stumble together towards the hoped for healing of the global community.

Mass and BreakfastMother’s Day

On Thursday 6 May, we welcomed mothers, grandmothers, and other special women to our

College to celebrate the gift they are to us.

Our students were blessed to be able to invite these special women to our school and celebrate at

the annual Mother’s Day Mass and Breakfast.

Father Binh Le celebrated a beautiful eucharistic liturgy and joined over 200 for a pancake

breakfast.

Languages’Week

In the first week of May the College celebrated Languages Week. Our students participated in a range of activities including Italian dance and music, a Judo workshop and a Taiko performance. Alongside all the fun, students were immersed in both Italian and Japanese cultures through language seminars and traditional foods including sushi and gelati.

MarianistDay

This time last year we were in lockdown and had to celebrate Marianist Day remotely. It was pleasing to be able to celebrate Marianist Day this year as a College Community. Held on Friday 21 May, students attended a liturgy and were privileged to have Father Le join us to celebrate mass. The mass celebrated the remarkable lives of our Marianist Founders; Blessed William Chaminade, Blessed Adèle de Batz de Trenquelléon and Venerable Marie-Thérèse de Lamourous. After the liturgy celebration students participated in a morning carnival, which included inflatable rides, video games, and sport competitions. It was a welcome opportunity to take time out of our busy term to celebrate together the work of the year and the legacy of those who came before us.

Dr Antonio SagonaYoung Alumni Achievement Award

Congratulations to Augustine Kadende (Class of 2019) on being awarded the inaugural Dr Antonio Sagona Young Alumnus Achievement Award. In memory of Dr Sagona, his family founded this award in appreciation of the College’s role in shaping him as a person and scholar. The award recognises former students from each campus who are within five years of completing their time at Emmanuel College and their achievements in study, employment, sport, the arts or community service.

On Sunday 23 May we were extremely excited to hold our first Open Day in two years. With the great weather on our side we had over 300 families attend this major event. Prospective students and families had a chance to hear from Mr Stock and enjoy a tour of the campus. They also had the opportunity to experience the different learning areas.

Our next event will be our Information Morning, details can be found on the back of this magazine. A friendly reminder that applications for Year 7, 2023 close Friday 20 August, 2021.

MusicalGodspell

Due to COVID our production team had only two months to prepare for this year’s musical ‘Godspell’. Godspell is a modern–day version of the gospel of Matthew, opening with John the Baptist calling a disparate group of young men and women from their working lives to follow and learn from Jesus. They form a roving acting troupe that enacts popular parables through song and dance, comedy, and mime in an industrial setting. Jesus’ ministry ends with the last supper, his Crucifixion and Resurrection.

Unfortunately the cast were unable to perform on the opening night due to a quick lockdown. It was extremely disappointing as this was the second year COVID had ruined plans for our production team. Our students were fortunate to have performed to our feeder primary school students at the matinee performances, with over 1,000 attendees across both days. Thank you to Musical Director Ms Galea, Director Ms Power, the 22 cast members and the production team on bringing the arts to life at Emmanuel.

DayIDAHOBITOn Monday 17 May we celebrated International Day against Homophobia and all forms of discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community through educational videos and material, raising the rainbow flag and inviting students to display rainbow stickers.

Cooking CompetitionMKR During Semester One, VCAL students at both campuses were involved in successfully running and executing the annual My Kitchen Rules Challenge. The Year 11 students planned, prepared and delivered under pressure a 2-course menu, delivered to a few lucky teachers, who were specially selected by the students. In preparation for the event, students worked in small groups to meet their literacy and numeracy outcomes by planning the menu, meeting the budget and dietary requirements, as well as organising the marketing and set up of the event. This year’s MKR event was a great success. Students rose to the challenge and delivered some amazing meals, given the tight restrictions, and most teachers left with a smile on their face and a full belly. No teachers were harmed in the running of this event!

Throughout May, students and staff visited and protested the indefinite detainment of refugees in Carlton. Currently there are 36 refugees being held at The Park Hotel. As we stood together, we offered our support and compassion through chanting and holding posters of encouraging words, so the refugees could see that we are here for them. Students collected almost 800 signatures for a petition to the federal ministers responsible for their detainment requesting their release.

On Friday 18 June a number of staff and students gathered via zoom for our annual Winter Sleep Out. Unfortunately due to covid restrictions this took place from home. The aim of the night was for participants to develop a stronger awareness of the plight of those experiencing homelessness and understand the things we can do to create a more

just situation for them. During the night we heard from a guest speaker, Lisa, who experienced homelessness for a period of her life. Staff and students slept rough at home in an uncomfortable part of their house i.e. back yard, laundry, kitchen, car. We hope that our actions are seen by the community as a sign of our solidarity with those who suffer homelessness. Those involved donated money to the St Vinnies homelessness appeal to provide financial support for the worthy work they do in providing essential services to the homeless.

ACCReport

On Monday 10 May our students competed in the ACC open golf championship. In 2019 they won the Division 2 championship, which promoted them into Division 1. This was not a difficult challenge for our students as we had exceptional players on the day. Jesse Trembath (Year 9) shot the best score of the day with a 1

over par 73. Notable mentions must go to Flynn Trembath (Year 11) who shot a 4 over par 76 and Taegan Dodds (Year 7) who shot a 7 over par 79. With a great team representing the College our students managed to win the Division 1 competition. This is a fantastic effort from our students.

On Monday 24 May, music students from both the Notre Dame and St Paul’s campuses participated in the ACC Art and Technology Student Exhibition at Deakin Edge, Federation Square. Our students played a range of original works and well-known classics in both solo and group works.

During Reconciliation Week students who competed in the AFL competitions wore indigenous jumpers. These jumpers were designed by Vinh Pham and James Callaway, both from the class of 2019. Before each game our students also gave an acknowledgement of country.
